Northern Gateway Making Gains In Public Opinion
Proposed route for twin pipeline – (250News archive)
Prince George, B.C. – A new survey suggests the opposition to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project, is dwindling.
The survey, conducted by the western based marketing research company Insights West, says support for the project, among British Columbians, now sits at 42%, that’s up 7 points since February of this year.
The survey also indicates opposition to the project has dropped by 14 points, from 61% at the start of 2013 to 47% in the most recent polling which was conducted November 12th to 15th .
“At the start of the year, strong opposition to the Northern Gateway outranked strong support by an almost 4-to-1 margin—now it’s less than 2-to-1,” says Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs at Insights West. “While a large proportion of British Columbians continue to have reservations about the project, the numbers are very different from what we observed at the start of the year.”
Although the survey shows there is 13 point increase in the idea the pipeline will benefit First Nations ( now 53% up from 40% in February), the survey also shows, at least four-in-five British Columbians are worried about increases in oil tanker traffic (88%), the risk of an oil spill (85%) and the impact of construction on the environment (also 85%). ( see chart below)
“British Columbians continue to be of two minds on the Northern Gateway,” says Canseco. “There is a large proportion of the population that remains concerned with the possibility of oil spills and environmental problems, but the argument about economic benefits has gained traction over the past few months.”
The Joint Review Panel is to release its decision and recommendations on the project by the end of this year. The Carrier Sekani have made it very clear, that should the project proceed, there will be legal action launched to prevent the construction of the twin pipeline on Carrier Sekani traditional territories.

Perhaps people are starting to learn after the initial knee jerk about this and the chicken little crowd is coming to their senses?
More like the eternal ad campaigns are starting to get to the easily persuaded.
So where are all the folks who swear that all surveys are bogus and the results of surveys and polls are completely untrustworthy? That knife cuts both ways.
Ya, OK, sure. Whatever you say big oil paid survey company.
Hmmmmmm, I think it will get built before the end of the decade. looks like its going to run by that property that the city wanted to buy.
I guess the idea is to build the refinery at summit lake area.
Okay Krusty… sorry I am late, (I was busy changing the old one), but here I am.
Speaking for and on behalf of the 914,000 in my group, I swear that all surveys are bogus and the results of same and such are completely untrustworthy, etc. etc….
Happy now ??
Peace ;-)

Not sure why you would have a refinery in the Summit Lake area. What would you do with the gas???
Taking this kind of personally, aren’t you RRR?
Out of a total of 749 people, only 27 from northern BC were polled; over 500 were polled in ‘metro Vancouver’ and the rest were either on the island or in southern BC.

Shouldn’t the people who are being directly affected have a tad more weight in the final say?

Actually the answer to that is ‘no’ Mojo
If they are changing the laws does that mean those who are being arrested have more weight in the final say as they are more affected? Or how about a neighbourhood where a development is going in, would they carry more weight in their thoughts as they are the most affected?
Those higher ups will tell you they have your best interest in mind and someone in Quebec will have just as much say in this final decision as anyone in Bear Lake because this is a national issue, provincial issue, or municipal issue. They have to protect you from yourself.
I would love to know who is doing these surveys, when and where…
I haven’t heard of any of them….
Its a weird worded survey.. kind of like asking someone if they like “sugar and cocaine” as opposed to do you like “sugar or cocaine”..
“At the start of the year, strong opposition to the Northern Gateway outranked strong support by an almost 4-to-1 marginânow itâs less than 2-to-1”
Wow the triumph of millions of dollars of ad campaigns lead to the majority of BC residents still opposed to Northern Gateway. Shameful of this site to try and spin it to
“A new survey suggests the opposition to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project, is dwindling.”
A less biased estimation would be
“A new survey suggests that despite a multi- million dollar ad campaign, opposition to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project, is still in the majority.”
So it’s okay for NGOs to disseminate false information and help organize protests but not okay for a private company to advertise.
Build baby build just to pizz off the misinformed.
It’s because of those TV ads….they have an honest to goodness woman that lives up here that is the ‘project mover’….it just gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
Nice little chart. Maybe we should have a nice little poll to see who enjoys their clean water and clean air, maybe even one to find out if we think we can eat money.
Northern Gateway is dead, all those Chinese financiers are being played for suckers. Their money is being poured down the drain. Hope they don’t mind making pollsters and PR and AD companies rich!
Just found out that INSIGHTS WEST did the poll on this issue…
THEY LIVE IN VANCOUVER, so i am pretty sure the poll wasn’t from northern residents.
Flawed survey. Top question they ask is if you believe this pipeline will increase tanker traffic off the BC coast… 55% agree with that statement?
One would think 100% would agree if they had any idea what this pipeline was all about (ie exporting bitumen overseas).
So right of the bat we have here 45% polled who have no idea what this pipeline is about.
If you only took the opinion of the informed who do know that this pipeline will result in increased tanker traffic, then I would be more interested in hearing what their opinion is rather than that of the 45% who can’t even fathom that this pipeline will result in more tanker traffic.
A flawed worthless survey IMO not even worth publishing.
But, but, but⦠the Liberal got elected which was suppose to be the “ultimate” poll that show the majority of British Columbians are for Northern Gateway⦠how can this be???… sniff, sniff pout.
Like I said many times before, just because the Liberals got elected does NOT mean British Columbians have changed their minds about the Keystone Kop’s (Enbridge’s) pipeline!
It’s still: GET LOST ENBRIDGE!!!
Hey Christy, careful how you negotiate this, you do NOT speak for a majority of British Columbians on this specific matter, do you understand?
Bring it and let it flow$$$$$

Hey that’s not very fair of you to show us all those pictures of oil spills Dragonmaster⦠I’m going to counter them all by sending in Enbridge’s “world class” oil spill response and recovery team:

PROPAGANDA.
metalman.
“Unlike regular oil, tar sands oil (made up of bitumen and natural gas liquids) does not float on water but sinks, making clean-up efforts more difficult and costly. To date, the oil spill in Kalamazoo has cost over $700 million and cleaning is still going on.”
That was from Dragonmasters article dated April 9th 2013! They are still trying to clean up the Kalamzoo spill! How long do you think Enbridge will supply PG with clean drinking water if their pipe bursts over the Stuart river? How long are you willing to have a sponge bath because of the tainted water flowing out of your facets?
This isn’t about money and jobs, this is about a bad plan right from the start!
Enbridge knew the Kalamzoo pipe needed maintenance for 5 years and did nothing! All the safety measures in the world will not protect you from incompetance.
More propaganda from the big money corporations. Believe them if you will. Tooth Fairy anyone?
Bad poetry works?
Why is it that people only believe polls when they tell them what they want to hear? If they don’t, it’s ‘propaganda’.
Let’s get it built to world class standards.
Hmmmm.
Would someone be willing to provide a clear definition of “world class standards” as it applies to oil pipelines and tankers?
It’s all on the Northern Gateway website, bubba.
Standards are usually set by neutral agencies and are based on measurable criteria. (We all agree on the length of a kilometer or what the daily temperature means. If I buy an electrical fixture, I look for a CSA symbol. You can look up the standards that are used to test vehicles. Etc)
Sure, http://www.gatewayfacts.ca/ makes frequent use of the term. So does the government of BC in its 5 conditions.
I’m asking if there is a definition behind the marketing claim.
If you’re looking for an ironclad guarantee of some sort bubba, you’re not going to find any besides death and taxes.
bubba: “If I buy an electrical fixture, I look for a CSA symbol.”
Good example. The NEB sets out a series of standards for pipeline construction and operation which are amongst the most stringent in the world. Lots of information on their site as well.
the gains the northern gateway pipeline is making in public opinion is for exactly the same reasons sherri green became our mayor. who had the most money to produce the slickest looking advertising campaign? this kind of marketing appeals to the undecided who are too busy or too lazy to do any real research of their own. ‘oh, well that looks like a nice lady with her dogs, and from all the nature, animals and children scattered throughout the ads, she must care about the environment, and ergo, this can’t be a bad idea’.
did anyone ever see the simpsons where sideshow bob was being paroled? he shows the parole board a tattoo across his chest that says, ‘die bart die’, and everyone is shocked. then sideshow bob says that the tattoo is in fact, german, and means ‘the bart the’. everyone laughs, and one of the board members says, ‘anyone who’s german can’t be bad’.
