Foul trouble plagues Timberwolves in loss to No.6 Regina Cougars

Prince George, BC – Foul heavy Timberwolves were unable to keep up with the No.6 Regina Cougars Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre. The Cougars defeated the Timberwolves 93-68, bringing the Cougars to 6-2 and dropping the Timberwolves to 3-5.

The Cougars were almost automatic from the foul line, scoring leader Jennilea Coppola (Regina, SK) went 6/8 from the charity strip while recording a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Adding an outside presence Katie Polischuk (Brantford, ON) forced the Timberwolves to cover the deep shot, draining five from behind the arc. Polischuk added an additional 19 points to the Cougars tally.

Fifth year veterans Jen Bruce (Langley, BC) and Emily Kaehn (Hixon, BC) led the Timberwolves with 19 and 17 respectively. Rookie Cassandra Rerick (Prince George, BC) stepped up to take the place of an injured Mercedes VanKoughnett. Rerick did not show up big in the box score but was integral in keeping the Timberwolves in control.

Outsized both inside and outside the paint the Timberwolves were in for a 40 minute battle when they stepped onto the court with the Cougars. Early on the Timberwolves got themselves into foul trouble putting the Cougars on the line eight times. The visitors went 7/8, giving them a distinct advantage. Nicole Clarke (Regina, SK) started off the scoring draining two threes to set the pace for the game.

Jen Bruce kept the Timberwolves alive, scoring 17 first half points. As the Timberwolves struggled to keep the game close the Cougars continued to move the ball quickly and accurately. At half the held on to a 40-31 lead.

The Timberwolves had no answer for Jennilea Coppola inside, quick ball movement left her open all game, giving Clarke and Madi Docherty (Regina, SK) space to feed Coppola the ball. More foul troubled created a wider margin as the Cougars hit from the line and racked in the free points. Consistent play enabled the Cougars to slowly build on their lead. Through the third quarter the Timbrwolves and Cougars had been trading baskets keeping them at a 10-15 point difference. With one minute left to play in the third the Cougars, up 17, forced a turnover. Docherty came down hit a three and the Cougars went up 20, a deficit they held onto for the remainder of the game.

The No.6-ranked Regina Cougars finished with a convincing 93-68 win over the UNBC Timberwolves. The Timberwolves will travel to Kelowna, BC next weekend for a double0header with the UBC Okanagan Heat. The Cougars will travel to Lethbridge, AB for a double-header with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
