Prince George, B.C. – Although the forms for concrete pouring are being put in place, today marked the official ground breaking for the new Delta Hotel that is being built in downtown Prince George.
It won’t be long before there will be two cranes working in the downtown core ( the other is at the Wood Innovation and Design Centre) as the Delta Hotel starts to take shape.
The Hotel will have 170 rooms, a restaurant, fitness centre, heated pool, a business centre and a 4,000 square foot ballroom.
President and CEO for Delta, Ken Greene, says Delta employees who are originally from northern B.C. are already asking if they can transfer to the new hotel to work. “We couldn’t be more proud to be coming to the Northern Capital of B.C.” said Greene. He says the project “represents all that Delta is doing to make it’s holdings the best 4 star upscale hotels in all of Canada.
The actual building will be owned by River City Hotel Management Corporation and will be managed by Delta Hotels and Resorts.
Construction will take about 15 months and will create about 120 jobs. Then, when complete, the hotel itself will provide about 100 jobs.

wonder how many of those 100 jobs will be filled from places other than PG?
I think this point has been made before … but what is the standard quantitative definition of a “job”? … is it a one year of full-time employment? a lifetime? a number of bodies employed for at least one day? …just what is it? …. numerous press releases use the term but no one actually says what it is …

====================================
Any large employer I’ve been around typically equates a job as an FTE or “Full Time Equivalent”. So 1 FTE equals the hours worked by 1 full time worker, 0.5 FTE would equal half the hours worked by a full time worker, etc. It may vary based on the workplace, but one FTE would typically be around 2,000 hours of work per year.
I just want to know why we bother with these silly ceremonial things anymore?
Besides, if you are going to have a ground breaking, shouldn’t you at least break some ground? It looks like a truck just dumped some soil on the unbroken ground and they are moving it around with a shovel. Hardly a ground “breaking”, LOL :)
Thanks NMG … that makes sense …
What was ground breaking was Shari Green doing some work.
Heyy come on… Be nice.. Our Mayor with a shovel in her hand??? can’t you see she’s working???
According to the Federal Government EI system – A full time “job” employee is someone who works 20 hours or more a week.
Six brand new shovels.
Not sure why this is a big political event. Especially when the money being spent is (finally) private money. I can see the Mayor being there, but why a Photo Op for the Liberals???
Anyhow. Good to see private money at work, rather than tax dollars.
Maybe Shari will run in the next election for the liberals?
Full time in my opinion should be close to 40 hours (maybe 35 to be leniant)
Those are definitely not City of PG shovels…they do not have the integral chin rests ;P
Is this the one with the condos in it as well? Or is just hotel?
Dont worry lonesome, the union is probably already on their way to labour relations with this picture in hand. Shoveling dirt is a brothers job ya know ;)
Those are special shovels! The mayor probably had a team of 20 do research on what was the best, lightest etc shovel on the market. The shovels were only $49.99 each but the research cost us $498021.06 Then she sent them to China to be blessed by our “Twin City” First class airfair for the shovels and expences… $27953
Rod, Clint and the Delta group deserve all the credit.
Nothing like a photo opportunity to feed the egos of the politicians.
From what is visible from an outsider, I totally agree psst.
I wonder what assistance IPG provided.
Did Chief Green drive to the ceremony from city hall in her new Leaf? Is it in use during this season? I saw it once at Ferry and Westwood.
Look at those egos at work. Interesting that I heard that the main contractor, TriCity (and an associated company) is being sued for various projects including one in Quesnel. Friends in Kamloops tell lots of stories about these guys so be careful if you are considering working there…enough said.
It is interesting that Delta is even involved but you really have to look at who actually owns them to understand why they would take ‘another’ chance on Prince George. I just hope that they have a good contract with this group so that they can take the project over when they need to.

Being a private development (nice to have one this size in PG), they can choose whoever they want without our knowledge since it does not involve tax payer dollars.
The funny part is the work on the foundation has been going on for a month or more!
I bet you would be first to grab a shovel NMG if that hole they were digging was for a PAC!
