Quesnel Open House for Displaced Canfor Workers and Community

Wednesday, November 27, 2013 @ 2:05 PM

Quesnel, B.C. – A special open  house, community  information session  is set  to take place in Quesnel this afternoon.

With 209 employees and  a large number of contractors and  spin off businesses expected to be impacted by the closure of the Canfor sawmill in Quesnel in March,  the  session this afternoon is aimed at  providing support and information.

“We’ve got a really good cross section of folks  that are going to be there” says Mayor  Mary Sjostrom who says Canfor West Fraser and  the Steelworkers Union will all have representatives there.

This is not a job fair, says Sjostrom,  it is an opportunity for  people who have questions to  get answers, and for  those who want to find out what kind of support or options  are  open to them.

Mayor Sjostrom says  she is hopeful those who  will  leave their jobs  will be able to  stay in the community “I am optimistic because we are very resilient, we have a great community here  and we’re affordable and  we’re hoping a lot of folks will be able to find employment  as we move into mining and re-training  and we’re hoping folks will stay here.”

She says Quesnel is continuing to support the Blackwater –NuGold mine project “We continue to work on any options around mining or  diversification.”

The  open house is taking place at the Senior’s Centre in Quesnel,  from 3-7 this evening.

I don’t mind this, I think this is a good initiative for the affected workers and their families. I just don’t like the fact that Canfor looked after it’s own health and welfare first and foremost, while all their affected workers and families seemed to be after-thoughts.

Anyway, this is part of a good after-thought (reactionary) initiative!

If you think that you’re anything more than just a number when it comes to Canfor then give your head a shake. Canfor is a business and it’s going to do what ever it thinks it needs to do to survive. If that means shutting a mill down and people losing their jobs, so be it.

Canfor cares about Canfor. That’s it.

I wonder if Canfor will be there to interview new employees for their new mill in China.
