Liquor Sales in Grocery Stores Recommended

Prince George, B.C.- There have been no final decisions yet, but the review of B.C.’s liquor laws includes recommendations to allow the sale of liquor in grocery stores.
Parliamentary Secretary John Yap delivered his report and its recommendations to the Minister of Justice on Monday. While there are several recommendations yet to be made public, Yap is releasing two of the recommendations now.
The recommendation calls for liquor in grocery stores, but that the province should “maintain the current cap on the total number of retail outlets in the province, and that liquor products be separate from grocery products in order to restrict minors from accessing alcohol.
In order to give everyone time to adjust to the suggested changes, Yap calls for a “phased in approach”.
The report puts forward more than 70 recommendations on modernizing B.C.'s liquor laws.

Good. Hopefully it goes, and we get liquor at Costco! I for one am sick of listening to the commercial on the radio about how hard parenting is and that liquor in grocery stores will encourage kids to buy it. Whaaaatever honey. Keep your kids in line and we wont have that issue ;)
Agreed!
Ive heard those commercials too littleone. They come off very hypocritical to me:
“you should only buy liquor from us or your children will die – this commercial supported by local 1234, paid for by labour BC”
yeah – hoookay
I have been to Alberta where they do sell @ CostCo and SuperStore etc and have not heard of any major problems there. Unless I am wrong?
I worked at a local grocery store where they sell wine making kits. Many kids came in and bought them on a weekly basis. They looked on the net and found the instructions on how to make wine. I dont know what the rules are for this now but it was quite common about 10 years ago.
OH,,, and kids trying to buy booze has been going on for many, many years. I am sure that selling it in grocery stores will not alter or stop this act.
Many of you have come here to the Shuswap and enjoyed the convenience of shopping for your Jack Daniels …Coors Lite and your favourite wines ..then proceed to fill your cart with the foods to accompany your spirits…We don’t see any problems here …except the long line-ups.Same prices as the Govt stores and a large walkin cooler …
Costco will not bring in a liquor store unless the government relaxes the price controls. I believe this is in the works. Thats a good thing. the last privatization push was flawed. If you go private, but don’t allow for competitive pricing, the only advantage to the consumer is convenience. I still purchase at the gov shops because I know the employees collect a living wage.
Costco pays a good wage and treats their employees well and if i can get a deal on beer and spirits, then Im all for it.
I prefer the Costco World vs the Walmart world.
Also. As far as I know, it’s not teenagers or kids who buy liquor directly,(like the irritating commercial claims they do) unless they may acquire a fake ID, but even those are easy to see that they are fake. It’s the older brothers and sisters and even parents who “just want the drinking to be done in a controlled place” like their basement…with no supervision and hmmm…illegal underage drinking. So either way, people who shouldn’t be drinking, will be drinking, no matter where it is sold. So lock up your booze cabinets =p

Bingo! The government has a lock on prices, no matter what. There really is no competition for liquor in this province, even though we have ‘private’ liquor stores. I don’t think this will change considering how big of a cash cow liquor is to the Province of BC. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong.
Of course the BCGEU is against sales of liquor in grocery stores, it just renders them that much more redundant. And with so-called private stores, why do we need government liquor stores in the first place?
And BC limps into the 20th century.
JB, it has not changed in Washington State which went full private almost 2 years ago.
There are fewer liquor sales in the first year and the government is taking in more money through taxation. A number of stores which sell liquor are having financial problems.
The devil is in the details.
gus: “JB, it has not changed in Washington State which went full private almost 2 years ago.”
What has not changed in Washington State gus? Sorry, I don’t understand what you’re getting at in your post.
Gus are you avoiding me,I replied to your concerns over on the

The only issue I would have is people taking booze and sneaking into the washrooms with it and downing it like I’ve seen people do with food and cough syrup at the Save-on downtown. I have on more than one occasion had to alert security that I witnessed someone take something, stuff it in their jacket pocket and head to the washroom in back.
why do we need govt liquor stores it is simple its called selection I don’t have to wander to a couple of outlets to get what iwant a govt store is well laid out has great selection clean secure well lit up and price is a bit better
YEAAAAYYY. just what i need! More bums begging for money outside Save on.
Never mind where they sell it, they should quit taxing it so hard.
Naw,,,Just go into the ghetto downtown of pg and get accosted by the scum….get rid of the needle exchange , soup kitchens, and native replenishes out of the downtown, and the common folk may come down and shop…There are some great stores that I wish I could go to but the shadiness of the street folk makes me want to go to the mall or Wal mart. If I was a downtown business, I would be pissed…This post will probably get ousted cause I hit a few nerves…The ppl out begging and tweeking probably dont know what a computer is but their frickin social worker do.
When I was young, my family and I did all of our shopping downtown. Never again. Not even with my boyfriend by my side. Scary. This is a really scary town.
So now when we shop for groceries with the family we will have to stand in the check out line up with drunks eager top get on with the drunk.
I can see many problematic incidents at the grocery store resulting from this… theft, drunks in the store causing a scene, robbery, smash and grabs, and beggars out front.
As it is a cashier at a beer and wine store has to be of age… what now in the grocery store where the clerk may only be 16-years old. How do they police their till?
I guess what is bothering me is that the grocery stores already make enough money when I walk through the door. Independent liquor stores create jobs and give the private retailer a way to have income. I say keep it the way it is.
