Trapper Rescued from Morice Lake

Tuesday, December 3, 2013 @ 4:06 PM

Houston, B.C. – Searchers braved darkness, frigid temperatures, and strong wind to rescue a stranded trapper on Morice Lake.

Houston RCMP say they received a 911 call from SPOT GPS device at 3:45 Monday afternoon.  Police mobilized Houston Search and Rescue and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to head to the location 85 kilometres southwest of Houston.

After a number of hours, searchers were able to locate the trapper on the shore of the lake.  Police say the man had been thrown from his boat by strong waves and was forced to swim to shore.  Officials say the man was wet, but otherwise in good health.

"This is a great example of an avid outdoorsman who ran into trouble in the wilderness but had the equipment and clothing to keep himself safe until help arrived," says Sergeant Stephen Rose, the Detachment Commander for the Houston-Granisle Detachment. "Moreover, it demonstrates the tenacity of our Search and Rescue group and the willingness of local residents to help emergency services offer help to someone during their time of need. The willingness of local residents to risk their own lives to save another is outstanding!"

RCMP say the trapper showed his appreciation for the rescue team by sharing his breakfast with them.

Spot GPS I have one my son and my Dad also, if you going into the bush you need one

Good job people! Breakfast? Beaver tail and prairie oysters?

Beavertail and beans, still brings a tear to me eye.
Great to see people get out and help, way to go Houston!

Another example of how critical it is to be properly prepared. I have had a Spot for several years now and recently a new InReach system with smartphone satellite text. These system will not only allow you to keep in touch with family and friends but in an emergency case save your life. The other benefit is not only the quick and targeted response from search and rescue(SAR) but the hung cost savings for SAR resources. A Search can cost tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of volunteer hours. However a rescue like in this case with a specific target can be accomplished for a few thousand dollars and with only minimal volunteer resources. This along with high percentage of positive out comes in the use of these systems like Spot and InReach makes me wish everyone who went in the back country would have one.

cheers to the search and rescue response team …great job people
