Kin 1  construction  nearing completion, but no  word on when it  will Officially open – photo 250news

Prince George, B.C. – Work on  Kin 1 at the Exhibition Park, continues,   but  no one is certain on just when the public will be allowed  inside the refurbished  facility.

“We are working on  trying to set a firm date for a ribbon cutting  early in the New Year” says the City’s Manager of CN Centre and Community Arenas Andy Beesley.

Beesley says the  construction  schedule remains on time, “The ice plant is  scheduled to be turned on in the next few days, that’s  quit a slow  motion process though to cool down the slab.  As soon as we get the O.K. we will start building ice, and we are hopeful that early in the New Year we can start testing the building and getting some users on the ice.”

Beesley says while it would be  nice to be able to  feature the facility during the  Hockey Day in Canada events on January 18th,  but that is not the priority “We are really working with the Canada Winter Games  to try and announce an official opening date, but we really aren’t able to  set an opening date right now.”

Although Beesley isn’t  saying so,  the setting  of  the opening date may  be tied  to the current  contract dispute between the City and  its CUPE locals.   The union has rejected the  latest contract offer,  and both sides have been working  on essential service levels in the event of strike action.

Looks like they might as well have built a new arena.

Yeah I wonder what the total price tag will be on this. I agree they should have built a new one. But then again this is PG!

“Beesley says while it would be nice to be able to feature the facility during the Hockey Day in Canada events on January 18th, but that is not the priority.”

Unbelievable. That should be a priority! Just think of the exposure that event will generate! Does anyone at the city think?

axman…obviously the construction of this facility was set years ago, long before the “Hockey Day in Canada” was set for this year.
Doesn’t anyone think before making a stupid comment??!!

Not really a stupid comment. It was scheduled to be complete October 2013. And still no opening date scheduled. For months!!!!!!

Well it’s obvious that you don’t. There is absolutely no reason they can’t say, “Opening for Hockey Day in Canada is now our priority.” If they do, they do. If they don’t well then they don’t.

Maybe this is why they need a new communications department.
