Liquidation World to Close

Monday, December 9, 2013 @ 3:56 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The days for Liquidation World in Prince George are numbered.

It’s parent company, Big Lots out of the United States,   has announced it will  be closing   it’s 73   Liquidation world stores in Canada.  In a market release  issued  Friday, Big Lots, advised “we have decided to exit the unprofitable Canadian market, where we currently operate 73 stores under the Liquidation World or LW brand names, 5 stores under the Big Lots brand name, 2 distribution centers, and an office. We intend to begin an orderly wind-down process immediately and expect that principal operations will cease during the first quarter of fiscal 2014.”

Liquidation World was struggling when Big Lots purchased  the company  two years ago.  The company says it planned to revitalize Liquidation World  , but says   “we have not been able to gain the necessary traction in the Canadian marketplace that had originally been anticipated”  Big Lots says to further  invest capital into the  Canadian operations, would not be in the best  interests of  the company or its shareholders.

“we regret the impact that the closings will have on our associates, our customers and the communities in Canada where our stores, distribution centers, and office are located” says the release from Big Lots.  The company says it  is  “ committed to exiting our operations in a thoughtful and deliberate manner in order to minimize disruption for our associates and customers.”

I thought they closed years ago.

When took over Liquidation World, there was a decrease in inventory levels and smaller selection in products available. So this announcement does not surprised me.

Will leave a big hole down town

It would be great if XS Cargo replaced them.

I am pretty sure the market place is there, but if it insufficiently stocked for the clients, the clients will go else where.

Insufficiently stocked in this case is not having enough selection. Since Dollarama is going to be opening up an outlet in Walmart Land, it will add more pressure on Liquidation world.

The end result is, they ran short on money, they skimped on the inventory and lost the clients. What they should have done was shut down half of their stores, focussed the inventory into the stronger market place and dug themselves out of the hole.

We used to go there every now and then a few years back. Then they were taken over and it was never the same which to us meant no real liquidation type bargains.

We revisited them a few months ago and that was it. New stuff, high prices, etc. Could get the same almost anywhere.

It was obvious that they could not survive that way.

Sure never a problem to find parking there. Still isn’t for those who say there is no parking downtown.

Location sucked too.

Hopefully that horrible, sleazy furniture store will close on the ground level too. Maybe with both of those places gone something useful will go onto that block.

We were in there a couple of weeks back and it was like us said, new stuff and defiantly not liquidation pricing, add in the excessive number of addicts accosting you even waiting at your car door and it’s not surprising this location is closing.

Never saw any advertising from them. That could have contributed to the problem.

well that sucks, i love that store :-(

PG needs to have a big anchor store that uses up the whole building, like The Bay did, many years ago.

They had the Bay, who moved.

Then they had the Brick, who moved.

Who’s next??

I went to Liquidation World ONCE upon a time ago.
