Plenty of Snow, But No December Record for P.G.

Tuesday, December 31, 2013 @ 6:00 AM

Prince George, B.C. –Oh it may seem like we have had an  unusual amount of snow in December, and you would be partly right.

Prince George gets, on average, 48  centimetres of snow in December.  Environment Canada Meteorologist Doug Lundquist says  the City has  received about  75 centimetres so far.   That is well above the  average for December, but no where near the record.

The record  snow count  for the month goes back to December of 1990.  That year,  136 centimetres of white stuff was dumped on the City.

It is the Peace Region which has broken snowfall records for December 2013. “When they got the  big dump of snow,  it’s been cold,  they’ve had the occasional Chinook, and then they got  a big dump of snow again, so it’s been  off and on in the Peace for the whole month.”  The  Peace Region has received 123 centimetres of snow  in December, breaking the previous record of 118 centimetres of snow for the  month.

As for what lies ahead for Prince George when it comes to  the start of the New Year?  Temperatures hovering around the freezing mark,  then  on the weekend,  lows dipping  back to minus 7. “We have another system  coming through  Wednesday through Thursday and that will give us more snow on those two days” says Lundquist.   He says we can expect  wet snow  in the lower levels,  and  snow  up high. So it will be “Happy New Year, but keep the shovel handy.”

Good news,   there could be some sunshine on the weekend.

How much rain ?

too much rain >.<

It is too bad that there is not enough funding to have satellite weather stations in the College Heights and the Hart Highlands areas of the city. We would have a much truer picture of how much snow falls in PG.

And the city streets were cleared much fastter & cleaner in 1990.

tsk, tsk, tsk, kendoo. you’re unto a touchy subject. LOL. Have a Happy New Year.

What snow removal this is ridicules this year go back to the old system and get it done in 3 days

With weather like this, it is not how much snow falls, but how much actually stays.

12.5 cm could actually fall, but the City waits a few hours and it melts down to 10cm and turns into slush, and then ice, and there is no longer enough on the ground to call out the crews. ;-)

Of course, a day later it freezes solid and, if one stays in the tracks instead of balancing on the ridges, one can take out the whole underside of the car from front bumper shroud to muffler and anything in between. :-(

exactly Gus – plus that 12.5cm is at the lowest snowfall location in the area so its a win-win for the city. Meantime most residents are trying to deal with 25cm on the road…

How much are taxpayers paying for the snow not to be cleared?

The main reason that the City cannot get this snow removed in a efficient manner, is the lack of enough proper equipment, lack of a cohesive plan to move the snow, and last but not least to many miles of snow to be removed in a short time frame.

What we need to do is have the outlying areas like the Hart Highway, Pineview, Haldi Road, Foremen Flats, etc; contracted out to Yellowhead Road and Bridge, who already have the equipment, already work in these areas, and who would get these roads plowed in a more efficient manner.

The balance could be looked after by the City of Prince George, and its staff. This would at least give them a chance to get the job done in a few days.

The problem calls for some in depth analysis, and some forward looking solutions.

Repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is a form of insanity.

Lets see buy snow removal equipment or buy hybrid toys and an electric go kart. The taxpayer funded scientists up at the uni said we would be growing palm trees by now. I wonder how many of them have world cooking snow blowers.

Hey how about those Looney tune climate scientists stuck in non existence summer ice in Antarctica where even three ice breakers can’t help. Climate scientist not an occupation one would want to admit to.

Job growth in the form of electrical line men to reconnect folks after ice storms. Job security until global warming kicks in. And then air conditioner electricity will be still in need. Win win.

Local rivers and streams dry up in the summer so salmon cannot spawn, massive fish die-offs. Bears, that depend on annual salmon runs for food, starve resulting in massive die-offs.

Win Win.

Huh

Umm… that would be sarcasm seamut.

That all you got.

Actually I have something else for you, and everyone else on this 250 news site:

Have a happy new year!

Here’s a good one for people#1. That blog WUWT you run down with no facts, well Anthony watts is now directly helping with weather forecasts for the research ship full of climate change researchers trapped in the ice. how ironic. Oh three icebreakers have failed in rescue attempts.
