Crash scene, photo submitted
Prince George, B.C.- Another serious crash on Highway 16 west, near Sunny Slope Road (Cluculz Lake) .
It has been confirmed one person is dead, it is possible there is another fatality, but emergency crews are waiting for the jaws of life to arrive on scene so they can pry open what's left of a white pick up truck.
Witnesses say it appears an eastbound pick up truck collided with a westbound, empty logging truck. Details of the crash have not yet been confirmed by investigators.
Highway 16 is closed through this area.

There you go have a look at that road it has not snowed for a few days now the hwy is still ice covered
unacceptable
tires, road condition/road maintenance, speed, distracted driving
Did I miss anything?
Damn⦠these motor vehicle accidents just keep happening :-( RIP.
There needs to be a larger investigation, why this winter more than any others??? It’s suppose to warm up to above freezing by this Friday⦠are we going to have more rain that cannot penetrate frozen ground? Just laying in pools until the temperature drops and the standing water / slush freezes on our highways and city streets?
Then start the weather cycle all over again! What can the road crews and city crews do? Wet vac. the streets and highways before the rain water turns to ice?
Maybe the highway and city crews should start buying and operating those big steam rollers, but replace the steel rollers with giant absorbent towel rolls that suck up the standing rain water⦠I don’t know, I am stumpedâ¦
I just hate reading about this kind of news, which is happening far too frequently, yet we can’t make it stop!!!
They have graders with ice blades. In Albeta and sask they use a by product from pot ash mines on the roads works better than salt and gets rid of ice in alot colder temps.
There is a visible strip of sand right up to the trailer which says to me that the road was sanded before accident. As Loki stated there are a number of things that could have been the cause.
Might want to let the investigation proceed before throwing the road maintenance contractor under the bus.
By the looks of the road, it was in “good winter driving condition”. I am a professional driver, and that highway has been plowed recently. Check the snow bank on the left of the picture, looks pretty fresh to me.
I’m very sorry for the loss of life, but this is not the place to be judge and jury.
My condolences to the families.
Taxi
You see a plow going down the highway with sparks coming off the blade you bitch. Well the next stage of plowing this highway was sparks. So what do you want?
I see a visible strip of sand up the center line to the trailer and two strips of solid ice coming away from it right where your tires would be when driving in your own lane. Condolences to everyone.
I saw two passenger vehicles crash on city roads (Otway and the hill up to UNBC) in the past two days. Why didn’t the City road maintenance crews scrape our streets while the weather was warm and the ice/slush/snow was soft? I am not saying the accident above was caused by lack of maintenance, I just wanted a place to post my utter disgust at our fine city’s streets.
I am truly saddened looking at the above picture. May this person rest in peace. Thinking of the family attached to this tragic incident.
Drove that road last Friday to Fraser Lake. Treacherous at best. Saw a yellow pickup with big YRB letters well off the road in the ditch Friday afternoon.
what I’m trying to wrap my head around is, what with all these airbags in vehicles now adays, WHY does it seem there are more fatalities???
I find that the frozen ice on the road, especially within city limits, throws vehicles all over the place. Exactly why I am not letting people I love go for a walk on city streets.
Who knows, maybe those ice strips contributed to the accident.
I drive that road every day for pg to bednesti is always bad the vanderhoof guys do a much better job than pg guys there is a real difference. They have the right idea in the kootanys they have a class action lawsuit against the road maintenance company down there. The sand is so fine the big trucks just blow it off the road. So unless your not right behind the sand truck it wont help much.
I’m not suggesting anyone was speeding…i’m suggesting lower the dam speed limits for the winter months.Let all drive at 70 k’s maybe less.I just hate these pictures that we are looking at…RIP my friend.
There will always be more crashs on this chunk of hiway until they put in more passing lanes or at least put shoulders on this hiway ,it has as much traffic as PG – Quesnel and half the road
Let’s look how many fatalities on highway 16 between vehicles and Semi trailers is that the problem they have no respect for small cars. The driver of the semi trailer never gets killed so why slow down on bad roads.
Those first two vehicles are part of the cause of those ice strips. They do not have to cross a scale on the way to the pulp mill and as a result do not give a crap if they are overloaded or not. The resulting ruts in the road interfere with water draining properly and cause ice buildup. Before the road was resurfaced a few years ago this was visibly more noticeable in the east bound lane. The only time that they watch their weight is when CVSE set up portable scales and news travels over the radio like wildfire when they do. Might be time to go to the pulpmill once a week and pull the load slips for all trucks and issue tickets for any found to be overweight.
As for the sand strip near the center, it is a common practice for the plow truck to go near the center to spread sand if oncoming traffic permits. This is for a couple of reasons as some will reach both lanes and it will continue to find its way into the tire tracks over time.
At this time Drive BC has all routes out of PG marked as having slippery sections. I would imagine that the sign at Western Acres would say the same.
Do not go and blame truck drivers , do you guys know that only 2% of truck crashs are truck drivers fault jn all of N/A
We need to get out of the dark ages and have alternating double lanes wherever possible. I would pay more in taxes to have that accomplished rather than continue to put up with these high speed jousting lanes. Imagine 2 5000+ pieces of steel hurdling towards each other at a combined speed of 120 mph with only a slim yellow painted line between them. Ridiculous. It may have been good enough in the 50s when you saw a car pass every 1/2 hr, but not on todays highways.
How about cement dividers? What is the death quota before improvments.
So Dodo the scales at Vanderhoof let the chip haulers bypass them do they? Ya whatever!
Those roads look about as good as one can expect in the winter.
As always, the cause for this accident is driver error. End of story.
I don’t know if that is sand near the centre line, could be skid marks from trailer sliding sideways.Whatever it takes these roads are going to have to be maintained better. My condolences
Taxi, yer Right, as usual.
I cannot believe the comments that show up on here. Has anyone yet thought to consider the fact that you may know the person(s) who died in the crash? This could be a neighbor or coworker…that they may have young children at home happily awaiting their arrival? Ignorance at its best on display here…
We all know that there is a dividing line at Bednesti for road service conditions, we all know the road is dangerous, busy and frequently travelled by light and industrial traffic, and yes…people think it needs to be someone’s fault.
From personal experience, I know, that when someone you know dies in a fatal MVA, the coroner will ask if you think(or evidence shows) that a major road change needs to be made for future safety’s sake.
Let the idiot drivers pass you. You’re going to meet them at the demeanor intersection anyway….
My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends to the victim(s) of this accident.
So Dragonmaster-bater I do not think that trucks hauling out of L&M cross the scale as it is on the FSJ road as I recall. Isle Pierre trucks have clear sailing all the way to the pulp mills but pull on the highway closer to town than this accident.
Go and measure the crown in the road and you will find noticeably deeper ruts in the eastbound lanes. If ice build up in these ruts were a factor in the crash then the drivers that knowingly haul overweight loads are partially responsible for the death(s) in this accident.
Like the truck driver who “parked” his chip truck in the Boston Pizza parking lot a while ago- think he did the mandatory brake check at Beverly? How long before there is an accident like the one that happened in Kamloops with a rig coming down the hill with no brakes killing I forget how many.
*****demano
And Tyner intersection
Thanks autocorrect
I am a proud wife of a hard-working man. He happens to be on your roads, in a very heavy truck, bringing you/I all our requirements…food, tools, cars, paint, lumber, furniture, …..on and on! This is their job! Please pay respect! Have you ever been in a BIG rig?? Trust me, I had so much more respect for what these people (women and men) do. The weight they carry is HUGE!! Pulling in front of a big truck is terrible as they have to pull on their brakes and hope like hec they stop……….. for you! Trust me, I have had my share of speeding tickets trying to pass big trucks (they pit my windshield and my truck), but.. those truckers know more than we do!!! If a truck is moving slow, there is a reason for it. Think about it!!! These people travel our roads daily, no questions, no negative comments… IT IS THEIR JOB!! As people who appreciate everything we eat and have in our homes, maybe..just maybe.. we should respect the job thst they are trying to do… just as the rest of us do!!
Ramiro you are very ignorant in saying truckers don ‘t respect cars…snd to make it sound like truckers don ‘t care…i guarantee this trucker will carry the emotional scars and have the accident playing over in their head for life.
Lonesome Sparrow, there are scales in vanderhoof catching all trucks coming in from west of vanderhoof. Besides that most of these chip haulers are far from maxing out on their legal weights so guess what, they aren’t the problem. Maybe do a little homework next time.
And lonesome sparrow, their was no brake check in beaverly at the time of the boston pizza accident, as there no longer is because their is no need for it. That truck crashed because the driver busted an airline to his trailer, and figured he was safe to drive to town with little to no trailer brakes. He was stupid. He was the minority that makes the majority look bad.
One must ignore the ignorance of lonesome sparrow. Never met such uneducated moron. Maybe if researched a little lonesome sparrow could tell us all how much dry beetle pine weighs!! Chip trucks can not get even close to max weight on any load with the dry wood. Thought I heard it all.
Agreed 57chevy… Maybe lonesome sparrow needs to fly south for the winter…the cold is starting to affect them. And before people freak out, i do feel for all involved in this. I wish it never happened but unfortunately nobody can take back what has happened :(
lonesome sparrow: yeh, heh, heh. ‘nuf said.
There is going to be more and more traffic on that road from all the work there in Kitimat etc. More and more traffic on same road, there will be more accidents.
They really should look at updating that hiway with all the extra traffic on it.
I was close to being overweight once while hauling chips out of a mill in the fort. Loading old uncovered wet chips off the ground. That’s why the trucks and trailers have gauges on them. Use them and stay legal. It’s very rare to overload a chip truck these days.
it may be just me, but when you read the heading the pick up was coming down the hill the rig was heading up. which means the rig was always on his own side till he slammed on the brakes of his empty trailer.
I know if you come down the hill to fast it is easy to drift over the line especially if you are passing and there isnt a passing lane.
yes the roads are not in summertime conditions. the true fact is unless we were there watching we are not going to truely know.
sorry to hear of the loss of another life.
Wow, there’s a lot of pointing fingers going on! Maybe the guy was tried, maybe this person was on a cell phone as people don’t know they should be pulling over to take the call! As much as some people would like to say they would or have it’s not done enough!! Company drivers are still taking that call, putting themselves and others at risk, this may have been that result, people think there smart enough to be able to handle it, think again ignorance seems to over come common sence.
Any word on who is deceased?
I came through that section yesterday. Typical winter road for this time of year with nothing really out of the ordinary. I drive that highway quite a lot and have noticed that drivers have been overly aggressive lately considering the conditions. I’m not saying that this is a factor in this incident but just a general observation of my frequent travels along that highway.
Hello out there. The truck was an empty logging truck……….
Blaming chip trucks if you have not driven one is useless.
In my experience, most complaints about chip truck drivers comes from yahoos that are stuck behind one because they are in to much of a hurry…;p :)
Crazy thoughts, what do you do for a living?? Trucks are hand free now-a-days! My heart is so sad. I cannot imagine the impact this would have on my family and I. In the North we have lost too many citizens. Why?? Yes, we can point finger and the truckers and road maintenance, however; we all need to be responsible drivers on the road.
My condolences to the family.
I drove from PG to Kitimat yesterday. I’m really surprised there weren’t more accidents. I took it easy slowing to 60-70 kmph in most corners. I drove professionally for 12 years including chip trucks. Most of the sand you think you see is under the ice where it gives a false sense of security.
Just to clarify my last post. Several times yesterday I could feel my vehicle starting to slide.I’m not saying I’m a great driver but feel my experience may have saved me from a similar fate.
Any word on who is deceased?
Unless they have a problem with their scales most logging trucks don’t haul over weight loads. The mills fine them and turn the load slips over to CVSE who also fine them. Don’t make assumptions unless you know what you are talking about.
@ Hoof girl;
The RCMP will not release the names of the victim(s) until next of kin can be located and notified. No one wants to hear that a member of their family died by hearing it through the media.
You seem worried that it may be someone you know, but these things take time. Please have patience, 250news will probably be the first media outlet to make that information public, as soon as it is made available.
Try not to worry.
If YRB made a better effort to get the snow off before it turned to ice .Everyone would be better off the road north of prince george was so ruff the traffic was down to 50km sat and no grader no trucks with two inches of ice and pot holes not just dangerous but hard on ones
car or truck.

Terrible and sad day…no matter what the case.
WE should contract out road maintenance so that there would be no excuse,we wood know that the roads havn`t been plowed, repaired, sanded or – – — – – – Ohwait a min. that is what we do Dammit
57chevy I am aware that BK pine chips are light but the mills also go on week(s) long runs of straight balsam, a species that likes soggy wet ground. The mills like to cut it as green as possible, you can almost wring the water out of the chips.
gitterdun The mill scales only weigh the trucks for total weight not the weight distribution per axle. It is almost as detrimental to the roads if trucks are continually driving with overweight axles.
BTW fte: am counting the days before we are sitting under a palm tree or on a sandy beach;)
Drove the Road to PG on Sunday, yes it was icy in most Places, but did not stop Peoples
flying past it like it was Summer , I like to pull of to the right and let them all go, better then being tail gated . In the nearly
40 Years driving this Road, we never had so many Crashes, what has changed, way more Traffic I think and the “I have a 4 wheel drive” !
