Cougars Earn A Single Point in Shootout Loss to Seattle.

Wednesday, January 8, 2014 @ 10:26 PM

Wednesday night in Prince George, the Cougars grabbed a single point in a 2-1 shootut loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds. Sam McKechnie scored in the fourth round of the shootout to seal the victory for Seattle. Klarc Wilson, who was suiting up in his 300th career WHL game had the Cougars lone goal, which came at 12:10 of the third period.

After last night's 9-7 win for Seattle, both teams came into this game hoping for defensive improvement. After one period the game was scoreless, and both goaltenders were in top form. Danny Mumaugh stopped all 13 shots he faced for Seattle while Ty Edmonds denied all seven Seattle opportunities. The Cougars had four power play chances in the first, but were unable to take advantage of their chances.

The game remained scoreless until 5:59 of the second when Alexander Delnov beat Edmonds with a hard shot from the high slot that went top corner.

From there, the Cougars responded well, but goaltender Danny Mumaugh kept the door shot. His best save of the second period came off a Todd Fiddler breakaway. Fiddler made a nice move to the backhand, but Mumaugh read it all the way, and snared the Fiddler chance to keep his team ahead 1-0.

Seattle were given a few more power play chances in the second and early in the third, but after allowing three power play goals against on Tuesday, the Cougars penalty-killers rose to the challenge and denied Seattle on all five of their power play opportunities.

Klarc Wilson tied the game at 12:10 of the third period thanks to an offensive zone faceoff victory. Todd Fiddler won the draw back to Zach Pochiro who fired a shot on goal which was denied. Wilson pounced on the rebound, settled the puck and shoveled one past Mumaugh for his 17th of the season. That goal extended the point streaks of Wilson, Pochiro and Fiddler.

Prince George continued to apply strong offensive pressure in the final minutes of the third, but Mumaugh would not relent, and for a second time this season between these two clubs, 60 minutes wouldn't be enough.

Early in overtime, Wilson had another strong chance for the Cougars but he rifled one off the left goal post off a two-on-one rush. Ty Edmonds made a strong save off of Roberts Lipsbergs in the late stages of OT and a shootout would be required.

Klarc Wilson, Zach Pochiro, Todd Fiddler and Jordan Tkatch were all stopped on their chances, while Roberts Lipsbergs, Alex Delnov and Shea Theodore were unable to solve Ty Edmonds. The game ended when Sam McKechnie skated in close on Edmonds and roofed a backhander over his blocker to give Seattle the win.

Prince George (16-22-2-4) outshot Seattle 29-25, and inched within four points of the Tri-City Americans for eighth in the West. The win for Seattle improves their record to 24-14-2-3 and into fifth place in the West.

Next up, the Cougars head to Vancouver for their final meeting of the regular season with the Vancouver Giants. The Cougars could have a few new faces in the lineup as well, as the January 10th WHL Trading Deadline will have come and gone by 11:00 AM local time on Friday.
