Friday Free for All- Jan 10, 2014

Friday, January 10, 2014 @ 12:00 AM

Snow removal, ice removal, poor driving habits,  fatal crashes,  contract talks, all stories that topped the news this week.   But it is your time to  speak up on the  issues that matter to you.

It is time for the Friday Free for All.

You pick the topic,  but  obey the three basic rules:

Keep it clean

Keep it legal

No Bullying of other posters.

Drive safe out there everyone. Drive to the conditions of the road. Can’t rely on the snow removal so have to rely on each other to drive smart, do your part, have a heart. :)

Yet another poor job of snow removal after a snow fall. Sure is fun having to help push people who are stuck on roads that haven’t seen plows in a month.

Still trying to wrap my head around why time after time I see a sidewalk plow come along and shortly after that a plow comes by and completely covers the sidewalk again.

Slow down and drive safe this weekend! Too much tragedy lately :(

Omg,,,,I cant believe I forgot to post this…

A great big thumbs up to Brant in the BCR site for their wonderful Christmas deco that included a huge santa in a big seat with lights leading to eight small forklifts.

I drive out to work there every afternoon and this was a wonderful sight everyday.

Thanks

I love this weeks poll.
How much of a priority is snow removal to you?

It`s not much of a priority in the summer.

Understanding that not everyone has the luxury of owning a vehicle, I ask that some of those who use a bicycle in the winter please use a little more common sense. I have seen many safe cyclists, and I have seen idiots on bicycles. The person who cut between my pick-up and a chip truck on the bypass during last weeks snowstorm was obviously one of the idiots. Please drive safe and watch for idiots, whether they have two or four wheels.

It’s not up to cupe members where the roads get plowed it’s up to the managers. Also if you have an issue with the city or how it’s run. Stop whining on a forum and go to a council meeting. I can tell you that there are on average ten people that go to these meetings. If you want to make a difference or what something changed that is the place to do it to on a forum.

Do you really think the average PG driver notices the condition of the roads ? Its jump in, flip the wipers once and then balls to the wall down the road they go.

PG the City of Potholes!
Ice potholes in the winter and ashvault potholes in the summer. Go PG!
I’m sure glad it snowed and filled in a few ice potholes!

Good morning everyone and happy Friday. My weekly Friday Free for All subject:

So… what has Harper been up to lately? Seems he has the National Energy Board (NEB) taking over the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Now, the NEB has the authority to determine which energy projects impacts on fish and fish habitat, not the DFO!

http://www.neb-one.gc.ca/clf-nsi/rpblctn/ctsndrgltn/mmrndmndrstndng/fshrscnscnd2013_12_16-eng.html

Gee does anyone think that if Alberta had an ocean on it’s boarder, they (and Harper) would place more value on a fisheries industry then they do now? Oh well Alberta oil is way more important than BC’s ocean and fisheries, isn’t that right Harper?

Just to add insult to DFO injury, Harper has now closed almost all of DFO’s Science Libraries. He claims the contents of those research libraries will be digitized, but only about 3% of the material has. The rest of that fisheries research? Well it will only be save from the landfill, shredder or burning if, and only if, someone makes an official request for that research information.

http://thetyee.ca/News/2013/12/23/Canadian-Science-Libraries/

Good old Harper… the last time the Leader of a Country held a national level library book burning was in Germany in the 1930’s.

Food for thought… have a good weekend everyone!

Aloha1, that is easy to say, but what if one has to work during the hours of council meetings? What is the solution then… pay for a stand in to attend on ones behalf? I wonder if that is not what the councilors we elect are supposed to be? If so then does the new code of ethics absolve councilors of this kind of fiduciary duty you suggest one would get by attending a council meeting to discuss specifics of snow removal?

The best one can hope for is that city managers feel a sense of urgency from social media to make the necessary corrections, and the ‘whiners’ on these forums provide that kind of context IMO.

Not even 8:00am yet and Godwin’s Law is already invoked….Gonna be one of those days?

If one has a good back and wants a bad back then helping someone by pushing their stuck car is a good way to go about getting a bad back. I recommend jumping up and down on the bumper (for a rear wheel drive) maybe for traction, but not pushing. If someone thinks they may require a push then hopefully they have a tow hook and a tow rope or stay home IMO.

Those of you who have cats for pets…..they are pets and should not be strolling around in other peoples yards. How would you like my dog strolling around in your yard and defacating everywhere? Next time I see your cat in my yard I will be trapping it and calling the SPCA.

Speaking of tow ropes, I stopped and towed some guy out of the ditch last night who’d been stuck there for almost an hour. He was trying to shovel himself out with a plastic snow shovel but wasn’t having much luck breaking through the compact snow bank.

I took a look at his tires and noticed that they were mostly bald. Seriously, this guy’s a statistic waiting to happen.

Aloha1:”Stop whining on a forum and go to a council meeting.”

Well, great! You can sit there and observe the pre-ordained agenda being debated. That’s all.

Seems Chis Christy in New Jersey was operating by the Harper book of an enemies list. Standard operating procedure for the globalist and zionist NWO ideologues (us verse them petty politics of divide).

My disappointment in Harper this week is his appointment to Israeli ambassador for Canada of a hard core partisan from outside the foreign service. Biard explains it as a strong zionist Jew to represent Israel and not the Palestinians… rather than as a Canadian representing Canadian interests… so we have an Israeli with strong expansionist ideologies at the expense of an occupied people… representing what our interests should be in relation to their conduct? No wonder Canada has no seat on the UN Security Council and Canadian diplomacy is at its lowest point ever.

Lets face it the Palestinians are an occupied people governed under the state of Israel, and the Ambassador from Canada should represent the balanced outlook that represents Canadian values to both peoples. This shouldn’t be about pushing a partisan agenda for one side in a conflict where both are guilty of crimes against peace. Baird is in effect saying Canada supports Israeli aparthied policies based on race and religion with his appointment. Its a shame on the dignity of our country Canada.

Even Ariel Sharon as Prime Minster couldn’t speak the truth without getting the JFK treatment. The guy was considered a national hero to Israel and in his last speech he speaks the truth about Palestine (its occupation by Israel) and as a consequence he has never been seen from again.

Oh, come off it, People#1. Surely you know that all the fish in the Pacific are now going to be so full of radiation from Fukashima that they’d be hazardous to your health to eat? And the fish in the rest of the oceans will be impacted, too? Just a matter of time. The ‘official’ news networks are already denying it, so you know it must be so.

The best of the blue fin tuna are already mini-A-bombs just waiting to to make your inerds glow in the dark. And if Star Kist ever processes Charlie, you’ll light up like a Christmas tree on fire with a mushroom cloud over it.

That being so there’s just no sense in not damming the Fraser River for all the extra electric power we could export. Maybe even to Japan, and China, and Korea, with a new multi-trillion dollar power line that circles the northern Pacific rim. Throw in a few locks, and Prince George could be a new seaport.

Just think of all the ‘jobs’ such a project would create. Every one of those fishermen displaced, plus at least double their number who now man the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, could all be re-trained to work on this new mega-project, which would make the pittance we might get from a bit of LNG sold abroad pale in comparison.

And there’d be endless work for all the rest of those shirkers who need to pick up their shovels, too. For decades into the future. And we’d all be rich, everyone of us, because we all know that any country that exports more than it imports enrichens itself the more it does just that.

Not that we should go overboard, mind you, we wouldn’t want to flaunt our new found affluence and create international jealousy. So we’d have to raise our own power rates and everything else up to unprecedented levels here, and encourage everyone to use as little power as possible. And consume as little of everything else, too. So we could all stay rich, with seven, or eight, or even ten figure bank balances. ‘Cause we all know that the people of every country are rich by what they produce and the money they save, not by what they can consume and the money they spend.

And if it doesn’t quite come off that way, well, then we can blame Harper. Or his replacement. For in our modern politics, the more things change the more they remain the same.

If the city, quits cleaning driveway entrances, it would save man hours, an equipment would be able to do more on the roads.
I also do not like the way our streets are now, and kept through the ,Strike Wars, This is not street cleaning.

Well BC-Hydro you still have issues. Willow River upper Fraser out of Power since yesterday at 9:00pm once again. That is 13 times since summer. Since the smart meters came in 3 years ago (that are not really setup yet) everyone I talked to their power has increased about $50 a month. and now we are looking at 9% increase in April. For broken grid that the phones even stop working on after 3 hours (so you causing Telus money to). I had so many of my business electronics for my computer company get fried from the brown outs. My UPS’s get cooked and need replacement one a year. Many people bring me their computers as they get cooked by these browns all the time to. HYDRO can you really try to fix before you charge more. Rant By Benny on a Friday

@Benny, don’t blame smart meters for your power problems if you live in the boonies. My bill went down slightly after getting a smart meter. I think many of the old analog meters were innaccurate or not calibrated.

If your bill went up, be thankful that you got such a good deal for so long with your old inaccurate analog meter. Now you have to pay the real cost. It sucks, but that’s life.

I agree with sayitaintso, clearing out our driveway entrances is wonderful, but if we are having trouble with snow clearing budgets, and our roads aren’t getting cleaned near as often as necessary, then I vote to discontinue this practice.

“I took a look at his tires and noticed that they were mostly bald. Seriously, this guy’s a statistic waiting to happen”

And…you allowed him to drive away without turning him in to the RCMP? Thanks for enabling him to endanger the rest of us!

Wouldn’t it be something if during city council meetings there was a block of time allotted to allow taxpayers to voice their concerns about whatever they choose?

Yep, all those that can’t clear their driveway openings for whatever reason will just love you. Can you come and clear mine, I have a bad back and can’t shovel?

He had done nothing against the law. Winter tires are only mandatory on certain highways.

“If your bill went up, be thankful that you got such a good deal for so long with your old inaccurate analog meter. Now you have to pay the real cost. It sucks, but that’s life”

LMAO! Are you really claiming to know which meters are truely correct, which are not and why his bill is higher?

*truly*

I am not sure why my street was cleared of snow when the bus route one street over was not! City managers please explain your street clearing rational.

“He had done nothing against the law. Winter tires are only mandatory on certain highways”

Are you kidding me. Bald tires aren’t against the law?
Now I’ve heard everything.

The best regularly cleared road in the PG area is the forestry road of the end of Domano to the tree nursery. That road was built so that the workers could stop being inconvenienced by having to travel via West Lake. Very expensive contract I would expect.

The best regularly cleared sidewalk. The yuppy run to the uni along Tyner.

IMO, it would be a disaster for many people if the city stopped clearing driveways. Isn’t it fun to come home and clear 2 feet of packed ice from the end of your driveway before you can even park? What about the older folks, and the disabled? Screw them too.
The citizens of P.G. voted to have the driveways cleared, and to pay a bit extra for it. If they stopped doing it, will they rebate that amount?
I live on the sidewalk side of the street, so this wouldn’t affect my driveway, but I am still happy to pay that amount on my tax bill, for the greater good.

The CITY HAS to clear driveways,They said if we agreed to tax rate heights for snow removable they would clean driveways.PEOPLE AGREED…SO CITY HAS TO CLEAN DRIVEWAYS..

Increasing the amount of snow that has fallen before sending out the plows is proof that the city does not look at past failures to see if anything can be learned and applied to prevent similar occurrences. Case in point.
======================================================
Dream: If we cut the grass half as often in city parks we will save a ton of money.

Reality: The small efficient lawn mowers cannot cope with the hay fields especially if the grass is even slightly damp so the big mowers have to be brought in and they even have to go over some areas twice.

Savings: At best Zilch

Result: Cut losses and quietly return to old mowing schedule.

=============================================================

Dream #2: If we wait till there is 12cm of snow on the ground before sending out the plows we will save a ton of money.

Reality#2: Smaller and efficient plow trucks cannot cope with the cement like lunar landscape that passes for residential streets so city sends out much slower and more expensive grader and loader combination to clean the mess, hopefully complete before next snowfall.

Bonus: Measurement taken at airport weather station an area that gets a lot less snow than other parts of town.

I can hear the voices at city hall. ” there is no correlation between those examples: the grass comes out of the ground and the snow out of the sky.Duh!”

Needed in the worst way: Review and audit of city snow removal procedure and how existing resources can be better utilized.

==============================================================
So I suspect the next clusterfudge will be- If we only pick up residential garbage twice a year and provide the resident a choice of dumpster size we will save a ton of money.

Guess it depends on one’s definition of “bald tires”. The law states 1.5mm is the minimum tread depth requirement. I consider that to be “bald”.

Give your head a shake if you seriously believe the cops are going to drive out to the toolies to ticket some guy for his tires based solely on my observation.

Umm.. thanks for your reply to my post socredible, a lot of sarcasm and tongue in cheek stuff in your comment I see.

Actually, when I post on such topics, using “credible” references that support my presentation of the facts, there is not much room for debate. After all “opinions” do not hold up well against “scientific fact”.

My original post is for all those readers living between here and Kitimat / Prince Rupert. Many of them care about our fisheries and ocean, and my post was meant to provide factual and current information to them on the Harper Government’s war against science.

I would recommend watching the CBC Fifth Estate’s; “Silence of the Labs” documentary. A fact based, yet extremely disturbing view of how a Man and his Government becomes so threatened by science, the facts, and truth…that they must kill and bury it.

There is absolutely no doubt that the inefficient clearing of snow in Prince George is the fault of Prime Minister Harper.

Lets see .. lower transfer rates from the federal gov’t to BC therefore lower infrastructure payments from the Liberal gov’t to local municipal gov’ts, which in turn leads to budgets running over and services being cut. yep, you probably could follow the money trail all the way back to Ottawa.

Eagleone often makes a lot of sense but today he’s back to his anti-Semitic drivel. There is apartheid in the region, but not in Israel. Try Jordan, which immediately on becoming a country expelled its Jewish population and whose nationality law explicitly forbids Jews to become Jordanian citizens. It was the Jordanian forces which in 1948 invaded Jerusalem and expelled the entire indigenous Jewish population, destroyed over 50 synagogues, and prohibited Jews from entering the Jewish Quarter. The Palestinian Authority has repeatedly stated that no Jews will be permitted to live in “Palestine”. In contrast, in Israel Arabs have full civil rights, hold elected office, receive educations better than those received by Arabs in any Arab country, and hold high positions in such areas as the armed forces (there are Arab generals), the judiciary (on the Supreme Court), and medicine. Arab women have even won the Miss Israel competition. Polls show that 80% of Arab Israelis prefer living in Israel to living in any other country. Even the Arab residents of East Jerusalem, most of whom are not Israeli citizens, show little interest in becoming part of a Palestinian Arab state. (Only 30% favour this.)

The occupation of Judea and Samaria is of course the result of repeated Arab aggression and terrorism, and is not an occupation in the technical or usual sense since the area belongs to no state and the Arabs are not indigenous.

Eagleone is probably just mad because snow removal is an area in which Israel is not very strong.

City is always searching for ways to raise money for their coffers, why not require cat owners to license their pets and confine them to their property, the same as dogs.

I know this wouldn’t be very popular. However I think that every vehicle on the road during winter months should have to go through some sort of winterized inspection certification. I have no idea how to implement such a plan as the local shops would be overwhelmed each fall with folks trying to get their cars in for a quick check but its obvious to me that people cannot be relied upon to do the right things and make sure their cars are up to snuff BEFORE the snow flies….

I watched a City of PG sidewalk grader grading the sidewalk from Carney and Winnipeg towards the YMCA and IT WAS ALREADY DONE. I am guessing that he was returning to his trailer to load the grader up BUT that is just stupid. Surely the sidewalk graders would use a circular route to optimize their time grading.

Another thing that irked me this morning was hearing on the CBC radio news that private sector jobs in Canada had decreased while the public sector had increased, even with all the government budget cuts. I have no faith in any of our governments.

People says Actually, when I post on such topics, using “credible” references that support my presentation of the facts, “. In others words cherry picking to support his unscientific biases.

“…jumping up and down on the bumper (rear wheel drive)”. Jumping up and down on the front bumper (front wheel drive) not so much, eh?

Teach your kids about taxation. Eat a third of their ice cream.

Well I am out to shovel more mann caused global warming. Back east sure got hit by that warming.

********
It wouldn’t matter. The vehicle would fail after one excursion on the PG Ice derby that City Hall considers to actually be a road.

Boy, Chloe, you are sure in a terrible mood today!!

Besides mercenary, the vehicle can be the best winter-ready car on the road yet it is the driver that needs to be capable. I’d support a winter driving certification…

Northern Citizen:”I agree with sayitaintso, clearing out our driveway entrances is wonderful…then I vote to discontinue this practice.”

The snow which is pushed into driveway entrances is more often than not big lumps of ice, compressed with road salt into a hard mixture. I have a snow thrower but the auger will jam or break the shear pins. The last time they piled it up it was about two feet high and five feet wide!

Should you succeed in your efforts I invite you and sayintaintso to come to my driveway and assist me with crowbars, picks and shovels to clear out the entrance so I can get my car out to get groceries and go to my regular doctor’s and dentist appointments!

Just leave your phone number!

Please stop asking for more regulations, certifications, etc. Over regulation has lead to the loss of common sense. I feel winter driving is one of the only time we get to exercise common sense when driving. Often times one needs to purposely drive for the conditions and not the speed limit, share lanes when there is lack of space, permit one to proceed when it is not normally practiced (spinning out through and intersection).
I just spent three weeks driving around an island in the Caribbean there isn’t a single traffic light on that island. At first it seemed like chaos, but after a while you understood the “Rules of the Road”. People used there common sense, and common courtesy. I immediately realized we lack this when I returned home. Everybody is just looking out for number one.

You got that right only2c

Seems like somewhere about 4 years back the city lost the ability to keep up with the roads. Yesterday on our block a bus got stuck returning a handicapped person to their house. Even an onslaught of eager helpers could not move the bus. If we’d even had “rut reduction” the fellow would not have got stuck.

BORNANDBRED posted: “I watched a City of PG sidewalk grader grading the sidewalk from Carney and Winnipeg towards the YMCA and IT WAS ALREADY DONE. Not sure what a sidewalk grader is, but if it was in fact a grader looking sidewalk machine and was heading to a trailer as you say it was NOT city owned. It was most likely owned by the YMCA. The city does not trailer any of their sidewalk machines…. that doesn’t make sense to trailer them.
The reason it looked like it was already done and was being done twice, is because that privately owned machine was travelling on the sidewalk that the CITY sidewalk machines had already plowed.
Do you recall what the color was? The city only owns yellow(ish) color machinery for their sidewalks and loaders/graders and boxes of the sanders.

Whatever happened to the gates that some graders had? They did a wonderful job of not leaving a berm of snow in driveways. Maybe it was too much automation. They had to rather pay for a loader to do the job.
When they do our street, usually about three time through a winter, they use two or sometimes three graders and two loaders. Why? I haven’t the foggiest idea except that it is (job creation}.
Maybe the city managers own some of the hired equipment and want it working.

lonesome sparrow, I live in the Blackburn area which is close to the airport as you know, and we have a lot more snow than most areas in town. When you say the airport gets less snow I disagree with you. You must not travel out there very often.

Lots of people here, seem to have problems with the 3 simple rules..
Some folks seem to wait for others to make a comment, Just so they can bully what you say.
Grow a set of balls,, give us your own opinion in the first place. All these,, so an so said,, step up to the plate,, lets see the real you.

Sunnyday….:It’s not a bad mood just tired of cleaning up after irresponsible pet owners.

Hello? It was yellow and there was no need for the derogatory comments about “grader looking sidewalk machine”. It appears you don’t know what to call the machine either.

I have seen many a piece of city equipment on a trailer; don’t know why they wouldn’t use a trailer for a sidewalk grading machine. This city certainly has sidewalks that just end suddenly.

How to start an argument on the internet…

1. State your opinion

2. Wait

There’s a great letter in the Citizen today from some lady blaming the City for her car accident. It appears she couldn’t change lanes when she wanted to due to the ruts/road conditons at the time.

Perfect example of how some people take no responsibility for their actions.

I received my Property Assessment Notice and my duplex in Ingala increased from $199,800 to $254,800. I did replace the furnace in 2010 and re-shingled the roof last year, that must be why.

Contact them and ask them why?

Chloe, I have to agree. I can hardly wait for spring to see all the dogshit that irresponsible pet owners have left behind. Makes me wonder about about these irresponsible owners personal hygiene.

Or, go here http://evaluebc.bcassessment.ca/Search.aspx and check out the selling prices in your neighbourhood.

This has to be the worst snow clearing in recent history. Haven’t seen a grader in weeks. I don’t blame anybody that’s working, as the responsibility rests solely with mayor and council.

If they weren’t so shortsighted they would have made sure that private contractors with their equipment were standing by and ready to clear the roads when needed.

Instead the ice and snow continues to build up. Ruts are making it impossible to change lanes. Some two lane roads are down to one and side roads are a total mess.

This from a mayor who said during the last election that she would never ever considering reducing the level of service for snow removal. ha what a joke.

Has anyone had a dealership say they could refinance their car loan after one year? My kid is stuck with a 22% car loan and he was told he could refinance in one year. He’s going to his bank to find out if he can.

On the national last night it said that many dealerships were doing this to sell cars. It’s illegal apparently.

I wonder if there is going to be a class action lawsuit on this topic? Would be nice to have it happen to such an ethical, honest and trustworthy industry like car dealerships.

How about the idiots that plow their driveway across the road, but only pile it up.
our street has been reduce to about a single lane. not because of the city’s lack of plowing, but private plows piling across the road from their driveway.

If you have a plow on your truck or atv, make sure you plow it off the road completely.

I hope the city sends out bylaw enforcement to severely fine those yahoo idiots.

That’s been all over the news for a while now. If it’s not in writing I doubt it’s illegal; the contract spells out your obligations, anything else is just background noise.

For those of you against Gateway would you promote terrorism? Interesting piece on sun news.

Hey everyone, the Fifth Estate’s “Silence of the Labs” will be on at 9:00 pm on CBC tonight. Time to wake up, because hear this investigative documentary is a real eye opener!!!

Be careful the roads are a mess. Saw another bus stuck today. Thought bus routes were supposed to be cleared? Hadn’t seen a plow down our street since early December and they’ve been down our street twice in less than 24 hours. Wonder why they are plowing the same side street two days in a row when streets downtown haven’t been touched?

Then why waste everyones time with your whine about his bald tires.

Good try at defending yourself though.

Defending myself? Good grief, I pulled some guy with bald tires out of a ditch. You seem overly obsessed with my story. Are you feeling lonely or something?

I knew a guy who used to trap cats. He ended up in a wheel chair! Call it karma I guess. How are you going to stop all the birds from crapping in your yard chole? Maybe the city should force birds to stay out of the city. Atleast cats bury their crap dogs don’t! If I caught someone baiting a trap to catch a cat they wouldn’t have to worry at cat crap in their yard!

Right on NoWay. Cat trapping disgusts me.

only2c said everybody is just looking out for number one but Chloe apparently is looking out for number two.

Harper is just reducing those on the taxpayers tit. Is not 3/4 of the complaing on this blog.

Hello? It was yellow and there was no need for the derogatory comments about “grader looking sidewalk machine”. It appears you don’t know what to call the machine either.

bornandbred, my sincere regrets/apologies. No derogatory or rudeness was intended. Please accept my apologies.

I believe the city sidewalk machines are called MT’s (with tires – and they pull a little trailer) and the bombardier (which sometimes pulls a trailer). They use salt or sand in these trailers as needed.

Silence of the Labs… what great CBC investigative reporting. Having said this, I really do worry about the future of the CBC, presenting the Canadian public with truths and facts that make the Canadian public “question” the actions and priorities of the Harper Government will not bode well for the CBC.

I particularly took Dr. Peter Ross’s comments to heart when he said; “Bill C-38 spelt the end in the Federal Government’s interest in ocean pollution.” If that’s the case then why would this government even care about ocean oils spills at all? Except to fret a little about value of the precious black and toxic cargo leaking into the ocean and all over our coastline.

I also liked Dr. David Shindler’s comment; “Alberta and Ottawa’s claims that Canada’s oil sands have the toughest environmental regulations in the world simply is not the case.” He also went on to state “we can’t have a functioning democracy with information based on B.S.”

Wow, I like it when world renown Canadian scientists tell it like it is!

That is right. At least cats are tidy about it and bury it.

Cbc presenting truth and facts. That’s a good one. What ever feeds your bias.
