Avalanche Closes 16 Near Mt. Robson

Monday, January 13, 2014 @ 11:23 AM

Prince George, B.C. – HIghway  16 is closed at Shale Hill  near Mt Robson because of a landslide, caused by an avalanche. The slide was reported at 9:30am and is approximately 400 meters wide.

Highway 16 East is completely blocked and there are no detours available. Highway 16 is  closed from the junction with Highway 5 to the Alberta border .

Ministry of Transportation continue to assess the incident and an Avalanche Technician is en route to the area at this time.

Lakes District Maintenance crews are on scene assessing the scale and scope of the slide.  It is currently unknown if any vehicles were involved or caught in the Avalanche.

Ministry of Transportation has advised that the risk of additional slides is very high and it is too dangerous to enter the current slide area to look for vehicles.

Please be advised that Flagger Crews are being put in place at both ends of the slide and in Jasper, Tete Jaune, McBride, and Valemount.

Highway 1 is also currently closed indefinitely due to the risk of avalanches.

blame game:
Harper,
Clark governance,
highway maintenance,
ministry of environment,
non-professional driver,
professional driver,
or abnormal weather patterns?

Hey you forgot Shari Green, your Mayor.
Cheers

Crossing my fingers no one is caught in there.

Yes, ditto to that bornandbred!!!

Checked Big Shale Hill’s location and it is on the BC / Alberta border, but on the Alberta side. Parks Canada runs the Alberta side of the Hill.

“The (Parks Canada funding) cuts are across most parts of the parks’ operations; highway operations, the avalanche program and visitor safety will remain as they are but resource conservation is the hardest hit, with four out of eight positions eliminated, long-time Parks employee Alan Polster told me.”

Wow, in the “ideological” slash and burn pursuit of a smaller government, Harper chose to pass over highway operations, the avalanche program and related visitor safety! Nothing on him here, but not to worry, there is so much more in other areas like Canada’s food inspector cuts, railway deregulations, etc. etc. etc.

Fortunately this is out of Mayor Green’s jurisdiction. It is not PG or China.

Loki and people#1, I need more popcorn.
