Hockey Day in Canada Nears
Prince George, B.C. – Hockey Day in Canada is closing in, and Prince George is getting ready to shine.
On Saturday, January 18th, Prince George will be one of the communities featured during the day long hockey coverage on the CBC.
There will be live cut-ins from the Cougars-Edmonton Oil Kings game that gets underway at 1:30.
In an effort to get as many hockey fans out as possible, the Cougars have planned lots of activities around and during that game.
First and foremost, the Cougars are offering a two for one ticket offer (based on availability) so the game will be affordable for as many as possible. This offer extends to season ticket holders as well. All two for one ticket offers must be done directly with Ticketmaster, either in person or by phone.
One of the sponsors of the 2015 Canada Winter Games has purchased a block of tickets so those who have already volunteered for the Games can attend and show their hockey spirit. While there will be live tv cut ins from the hockey game at the CN Centre, there is no guarantee the Winter Games will get a plug. The Winter Games team has its fingers crossed the Games will be featured in some way during the day long event on the CBC.
But there’s more.
The first 4,000 fans to attend the Cougars-Oil Kings game will receive a free “Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada” toque.
Canucks Alumnus Kirk McLean will be on hand to sign autographs from 12:45 to 1:15, there will places for fans to have their faces painted, or create a sign to show their hockey spirit during the game.
During the first intermission, Scotiabank is sponsoring the Dash for Cash, where some lucky fans will have one minute to scoop up , up to $2500 in loonies and toonies off the ice. All the money not collected, plus an extra $1 thousand will be donated to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.
The second intermission will feature the “Chuck a puck” contest, with gift cards from four local restaurants available to be won.

oh goodie… a day to celebrate gratuitous violence on ice.
Awesome…. a day to celebrate highly skilled sportsman playing the fasted game on earth!
Oh goodie a day for some idiots to drink too much and ruin it for everyone!
Seems they need to offer two for one tickets to get people to attend. Where’s all those stalwart Hockey fans in Prince George??
Is there anything you guys won’t complain about?
LOL axman. ” Its almost 8:00 am, where is the damn sun. Damn thing should have been up by now. That’s it, I’m calling the damn Prime Minister.”
BCRACER is just upset because his knitting talents will never be recognized. Maybe he can knit himself some big boy pants and learn how to skate someday.
oh, personal attacks because you can’t argue my point Summit?
Does anyone know when the next mayor election is??? November?
2 for 1 tickets… seems the Cougar management does understand what it takes to fill the seats. Should make it standard practice.
The next Municipal Election in Prince George is on Saturday November 15th 2014.
BCracer, there would be more injuries and injustices if there was no fighting in hockey. Its an alpha male sport.
I won’t attack you personally bcracer, but I will argue your point. Hockey at it’s best is awe inspiring to watch. The level of athleticism & coordination is unmatched by any sport & is by far the fastest team sport on earth.
All sport is violent, hell life itself is violent, extrapolate further, the universe is violent. Maybe sport is a mirror of all that surrounds us? Violent at times? You bet. Gratuitous? Occasionally. Beautiful to watch? I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but having played the game for most of my life, I have an appreciation & respect for how the game is played at at any level. It is our game, we may not have invented it but we sure made it our own. Travel the world & one of the first questions we are asked when people find out we are Canadian, is about hockey. It is part of our heritage & identity.
Unmatched athleticism? Unmatched coordination? Come on now… Its hockey. Entertaining yes, but it is certainly not the “pinnacle” of athleticism in the world.
Thanks Palopu.
hey eraser man hockey is tame compared to the early seventies when I played let me tell you if you didn’t keep your head up it was going too come off. like our junior coach always said its better to give than receive. if you find that hockey curdles your tummy stick to chess yawn.
Interceptor, ever played the game? Name a sport that requires all the abilities of hockey. Baseball; eye/hand coordination hockey; eye/hand coordination at a waaayyy higher speed. Basketball; the ability to think a move ahead of your opponent & get the ball to your teammate, hockey; same but again at a much higher speed plus the puck is alot smaller & you have to move it with something that is not part of your body. Football; the ability to deliver forceful hits to move your opponent &/or jar the ball loose, hockey; same only again, at a much higher speed & the puck is about 10X smaller than a fooball & is not in your hands. Soccer; eye/foot coordination, hockey; same, but…again at a higher rate of speed. Starting to get the picture? Hockey combines the elements of all the major sports & has to deliver a a much faster rate. Added to all this is a hockey player has to learn to skate as well. All most other sports require is that you can put one foot in front of the other.
Well I have read the hockey rule book, more than once….
no where have I seen …HOCKEY MEANS FIGHTING…
I have talked to hockey players..their resonse is that is what the owners and coaches want.
Seenms there are some fans that think it is great too… what gets dicussed the most… goals or fighting…. FIGHTING EVERY TIME.
No one, and I mean no one has been able to tell me why there is fighting in hockey… it isn’t in the rules, and yes I am aware that , this is what hockey HAS BECOME…doesn’t make it right that two goofs have to go out there and beat on each other…. you want to do that …join MMA…
or have them go to center ice just as the game starts and get it out of the way and then lets see a hockey game…if they cna remember what one really is?????
I’ll be rather ticked off if I went to a MMA match and a hockey game started…
BCRACER. Your salvation is found. Follow this link: http://www.knittersanonymous.com/
I guess is it you who must have the kniting interest, you know all the links Summit..
once again, nothing but personal attacks…
If the attendance at the Cougars games is any indication then Hockey is far from being an interest in this town.
Population 75000, attendance at Cougars games average 1600. So approx. 2% have an interest in WHL. Probably the same for Spruce Kings, and other leagues.
We always hype the interest in hockey, however it is not backed up by the numbers. Perhaps many years ago, but certainly not to-day.
Any ideas how many people, Ski, Bowl, Swim, Golf, etc;
detoe – Yes I have played, but just rec fun stuff. I will give you that it is the fastest paced team sport that I know of. There is no point in arguing a bunch of other grey area points about coordination, fitness level etc as there can be no way to be right or wrong. Just about every sport out there has its own arguements for being the “toughest, fastest, hardest” etc. I dont think hockey draws the premier athletes of the world but thats just my opinion. :)
I respect your position & opinion. I have to ask, what constitutes a “premier athlete”? Why would you not think that elite hockey players fit into this category?
Years ago Michael Jordan was asked which pro athlete he would like to be if he could. His answer? Wayne Gretzky. Can’t get much more premier than that.
I would have thought that Michael Jordan would have replied; “why me, of course”
metalman.
