New Hazelton- A weekend crash on Highway 16, near Mud Flat Creek, about 15 kilometers east of New Hazelton, has claimed the life of a 70 year old New Hazelton woman.

The crash occurred Saturday at 9.00am., closing the highway for hours.

Investigators say the female was the lone occupant of a vehicle that was travelling eastbound on highway 16, when the small car she was driving , lost control crashing into a cement barrier , bouncing off and then spun into the oncoming lane.

A west bound vehicle carrying three occupants was rounding the corner and collided with the small car.

The impact caused the woman's vehicle to be thrown into the ditch. A third vehicle coming around the corner was able to avoid the crash.

Smithers RCMP are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and the factors that played a role in the collision.
