Skakun Appeal to be Heard in Prince George

Wednesday, January 29, 2014 @ 8:44 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The BC Court of Appeal will convene in Prince George in late April to hear the appeal  of  Brian Skakun’s  conviction  of breaching the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The appeal will be heard on April 24th.

Skakun was first  found  guilty by a Provincial court  Judge of breaching the  FOIPPA   for the release of  a confidential  report on an employee complaint about   goings on at the Prince George RCMP detachment.  The report  made it on to the CBC’s website.

He appealed that  court’s decision to the B.C. Supreme Court,  but  the  decision was upheld.

When  the BC Court of Appeal  first announced it would  grant  leave  for this appeal to be heard, Madame Justice  Neilson noted the precedent setting nature of this case  “I am persuaded the determination of this issue may have some broader importance as well, as it will be the first time this Court will address the role of a municipal councillor in the context of the FOIPPA, and the result of an appeal may assist in defining the scope of that legislation as it pertains to municipal officers.”

Will this Guy EVER learn!? Hes a disgrace as a Councilor and should just go away. Hes the most simple minded, yet arrogant politician in this City…..well maybe the Second most arrogant!

Perhaps you should reread the story … the Judge noted the precedent setting nature of the case … She said “I am persuaded the determination of this issue may have some broader importance as well …”

In other words, the judge thinks that it may be bigger the Skakun and even the PG City Council …. it speaks to the very role of a member of City Council and their role in advocating for the good of the city as a whole. Skakun may not be your choice for council but he tends to consistently be near the top of the polls.

So rather than Skakum it is much better to have a Shari Green who campaigns on a 10% cost reduction in each city dept and the public end up with massive user fee increases along with the worst kept winter roads since God was a baby or Stolz who was chairman of the finance committee and doesn’t pay his property taxes.

I’ll take a Skakum any day.

There is already some legal provision for the protection of whistle blowers. The question is where is the fine line?

That is a very important issue!

Do we want everything to be kept under wraps, nobody coming forward to try to assist in a bad situation when one knows about it and feels that it is a moral obligation to speak up?

I certainly prefer a person who stands up for something important compared to others who just fall in line, pretending that all is well and that it is safer not to rock the boat.

Just my opinion, of course.

Skakun sure seems to be controversial. You either love him or hate him.

He has been to court several times, yet he his the one the people trust the most.

anotherside; PrinceGeorge: Well said.

It is said: You love him or hate him — I don’t hate him.
How can it be said he is only self serving??? He, and probably only he, is the one who will stand up for city residents. The others are far, far at the back of the pack.
You have my total support Brian!

Let see…

when this item first came out in the press Skakum said.. I DIDNT DO IT..

THen he said.. OK MAYBE I DID

THen after more investigation he finally said YES I DID DO IT.

Then he tried to get us to pay for his legal fees.

He cant be trusted.. so he fits in well with our mayor and council.

I’m a right winger, Brian’s a left winger. yet I still don’t mind him on council, he does bring a different view to the table. Which is good in governing our city. I definitely want a growth that is balanced, and that means balancing business and social needs.

For the good of the City? Micro managing City Staff is not good for the City. It costs money. What is the City’s price tag on this ongoing issue? Probably more than the initail request itself.

I hope Skakun runs for mayor. He stands up for the people of PG. Would it be different if he were mayor? Perhaps.
But like most political candidates, we seem to have the only option of voting for the lesser of all evils.

If it were me, and I was on the receiving end of bullying and intimidation. If I went to those who were supposed to support me and they turned a blind eye, I’d take Skakun in my corner anytime! And so would most of you.
I think the Inspector should have been made to foot the legal bills. Too many good people were forced out of work because of one little man’s actions.

“He has been to court several times, yet he is the one the people trust the most.”

That statement alone speaks Volumes about the PG electorate!

“I hope Skakun runs for mayor. He stands up for the people of PG. Would it be different if he were mayor? Perhaps.
But like most political candidates, we seem to have the only option of voting for the lesser of all evils.”

People seem to forget one tiny detail…Skakum has NO idea how to run the city and if folks havent learned anything from electing Shari Green there gonna run out and vote for a man who is spouting the “man of the People” bs and saying cliched lines over and over and votes the opposite of everyone else, not cuz he thinks its the right thing to do but cuz he WANTS to be noticed and seen as the “moral voice of the people”….and if this site is any indication folks are lapping it up. Brian Skakum as Mayor of the City of Prince George, SCARY!!!!

Calls it like it is …and we may never have found out bout this backroom deal if that is what ya call it.Run for Mayor Brian S there is enuff support..Scary sherry can go too pasture…

“others who just fall in line, pretending that all is well and that it is safer not to rock the boat”

We sure get a lot of those. The purpose of Council is to debate ideas and positions. There is little of that. When someone stands their ground, as Councillor Koelher did recently, they now get “plowed under” by the Black Queen.

“For the good of the City? Micro managing City Staff is not good for the City”

In case you did not know it, the buck stops at Council and the Mayor’s office. They have to do their due diligence, especially with respect to human resource matters. Harassment in the work place is far more serious than releasing documents with names intact. So one wants to make sure that there is none of that activity.

Many pairs of eyes, in that case, are better than none.

“People seem to forget one tiny detail…Skakum has NO idea how to run the city”

LOL .. LOL… LOL … so which person on Council do you think has an idea of how to run the City?

Before you answer that, Knowledge88, remind yourself that the City Manager and her staff RUN the city. Council sets direction. The direction Council is supposed to set is what they feel the electorate want that direction to be.

The City Manager makes sure that the direction is followed and the operation makes it work. In fact, here work should be measured in her ability to make it work or point out that Council is setting unreasonable directions.

Sunnyone, thanks for bringing this all back where it started. I know a couple people who were involved in this mess, they had my respect and still do. No one should have to go through what they did, and then have the city try and hide it. Sad.
And Gus, has council set unreasonable directions as it relates to snow removal? I think we all know the answer to that.

I am not sure that Brian is indeed interested in the Mayor’s chair. Why would he? He is very likely smart enough to realize this would be like jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
BUT SURELY, in a city of 70,000+ souls, there must some who have some of, and some idea, of the skills required to have a vision and make plans based on that vision for a city that requires and deserves a well functioning City Council, Administration and City work force. That is miserable lacking today.
THEREFORE, let us all look around us for candidates who have the integrity, the dedication and the skills to be a Mayor or a Councilor. Do it soon – time is short!

Further to my 1:27 comment, IF we have a Council with Vision reflecting the community’s long term needs, there should be little need for Council and the City to be piddling with day-to-day stuff like potholes and snowplowing.
But, it is obviously necessary for Council members to ensure that our tax dollars are well spent and that IS NO micro-mamagement as some say it is!
The only Council member worth keeping into 2015 is Brian.
Look around folks and find suitable candidates – not someone with a special interest agenda.

As skakun works in a mill, he is probably making more than the mayor, he certainly is once you add the raise he voted in for him and his croonies..

He would be foolish to give up his cushy job and run for mayor.. if he did we would soon be saying.. wow.. green was absolutly horrible..but better than skakun.. LOL

If the citizens of PG cant turnout for for the election. If your happy with a 32% turn out you will continue to have problems at City Hall. The Mayor had an $80,000.00 election fund who do you think the Mayor will support?

So stop crying about mismanagement and get out and vote its the only way you will get the attention of City Hall.
Cheers

5 turn out

I would vote for Brian again. I like the way he has the courage to go against the grain. This must be a cushy job as one council member has been on council for about 20 years , must like the pay cheque.

Bitter.. so you vote for a man who out and out lied to the citiznes of PG ? Breaking the law is NOT courage.

Councillors get paid about $32000.00 per year of which 1/3 is tax free. In addition if they sit on the Regional District they get an additional $17000.00 So they could get as much as $49000.00 per year gross.

Now is you take into account all the s..t, they have to put up with, with all the whiners and complainers, that’s not a lot of money,.

Anyone can bitch and bellyache (myself included) however at some point we need to do more, not the least of which is to get off our ass’s and vote.

HOWEVER. Before we can vote with any inkling of intelligence, we need to understand the issues and where the various people running for office stand on the issues. This information is somewhat lacking, for a number of reasons.

1. The City, Administration, and Councillers while spouting the need for clarity, do whatever they can to ensure that a minimum amount of realistic information is given to the general public.

2. The General Public while purporting to be interested in what takes place in the City rarely do anything about it. Even to the point of writing a letter to City Hall, attending Council meetings, having a meeting with Councillors, etc; all these things are available to citizens if they care to do something.

Last but not least. We have a number of people who criticize the present Council (myself included) but do not have a good feel for what they stand for (if anything) what positions they are advocating (if any) .

So how do we know whether or not that are doing a decent job??? Do we really believe that a new group would do any better?? Lets draw these people out, and have them go on record in regards, to taxation, PAC, Land Sales, Storm Sewer levy, Gas Tax Revenue and where it will be spent, etc;

We need something to go on beside bland statements about nothing.

We need at least three people to run for Mayor, and we need a number of debates, with questions open to the public. Only then will we start to get something more specific.

Have a nice day.

If Skakun ever becomes mayor, people will really see a circus. Not sure why this guy has suppoters. How many times does he have to appeal his conviction before people finally get the hint?

“LOL .. LOL… LOL … so which person on Council do you think has an idea of how to run the City?

Gus, I think its YOU thats outta touch with what really goes on at City hall. The City manager is directed (see ordered) by Shari Green to conduct whatever she sees fit. Council in fact sets nothing….it begins and ends with Shari Green and Beth James….the others may as well be dressed up mannequins at this point. Green specifically hired a former provincial manger with ZERO Municipal experience, have you ever asked yourself WHY she went out and did that?

“The only Council member worth keeping into 2015 is Brian.”

Wow, your right, we need WAY more sneaky underhanded grandstanding and attention grabing….Skakum for MAYOR!!!

After reading the headline I must retort.

There is NOTHING APPEALING about skakum
