IIO to Review Matters Case

Thursday, January 30, 2014 @ 11:55 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office  will be reviewing  its investigation into the shooting of Greg Matters.

The  legal counsel acting  on behalf of the  IIO  has advised  a review will be undertaken in the wake of  evidence provided at the Coroner’s Inquest into Matters death.

The family of Greg Matters,  who died  after being shot by the RCMP in September  of 2012,  had submitted a  suggested recommendation to the Coroner’s Jury, calling for  the IIO to  review its investigation and  reconsider its final report.  That suggested recommendation  was rejected  by Coroner Chico Newell who said it went beyond the legal boundaries of  an inquest.

The IIO’s initial  investigation  concluded that  no charges be  recommended  against the officers involved, but he report  did have a significant inaccuracy as it  said  Matters  died of two  gunshot wounds  to the chest.  As it turns out,  Matters had been shot twice in the back.

Counsel  for the Matters family,  Cameron Ward he is “gratified to hear that (there will be a review). I certainly respect Mr. Rosenthal ( IIO Chief Civilian Director)  and the work his office does. I look forward to the results of that review.”

It is not clear on when that review will take place, or when possible results may be available.

Meantime, the Coroner’s jury continues its deliberations.

dont worry people canadas largest gang(RCMP) will be fine and wont get charged for anything.

Good to hear a review will happen.

The chest, the back or the head ….does it really matter? The evidence is he was shot to prevent grievous harm to another officer! Police don’t take a shot to wound or warn, they shoot to kill ! The decision is usually made in a second or less, in reaction to a threat ! Maybe the public needs to be told……come at the police with a weapon and you are going to die !

No fingerprints on the hatchet. No DNA on the hatchet. Someone is full of $hit.

My other point is that the RCMP is run like the military. Would they not have a clue as to how to talk to this retired soldier. I don’t want to see any cop shot because they decided to wait and see as a perp gunned them down. I do expect that when a gun is discharged, the truth be told and let the chips fall where they may. No one needed to die. No RCMP or suspect.

Inaccuracy here on 250 too, he was shot once in the side and once in the back, the IIO has already sent a letter to each of the 3 parties according to the Citizen newspaper

The whole thing stinks and the IIO just more cops investigating cops

Shot him in the back they did…and yes they Lie like rugs!!

Was there a threat? Why no evidence on the hatchet? Was he even holding a weapon? Does the IIO just take police statements and not check for accuracy and truefullness? Was Greg actually attacking? Did the police over react because of an authority complex?

I think the neutrality of the IIO should be investigated but by who?

Folks be carefull out there, very carefull or you could wind up shot in the back, or back of the head.

Yes, ever lift prints off a piece of wood? Yes, no, yes, maybe
