Prince George, B.C. – Crews and equipment from three volunteer fire departments braved bitterly cold temperatures this morning to take on a house fire in Pineview.

Pineview Volunteer Fire Department Chief Lyle Wood says approximately 20 firefighters from his hall plus the Buckhorn and Ferndale departments were dispatched following a report right around 9:30 this morning of a house fire at 9025 Ellis Road.  Chief Wood says “When we arrived on scene we had heavy smoke coming from the attic and visible flame coming from a rear corner of the house.  We had to fight fire in a bit of the wall and a bit of the attic at that back corner.”

Chief Wood says the house was occupied at the time.  “There was a couple at home when the fire started.  Everybody got out OK, and that’s the main thing, they got out OK.”  A few pockets of fire continued to smoulder more than two hours after the initial response, and Wood at the time said “we’ve got firefighters that are inside the house tearing walls and ceilings down, trying to find if there’s any more extension.  Whenever they see a hot spot they’re not going to keep flowing water but they’re just going to hit it lightly to keep knocking the hot spots down, trying to keep the damage to a minimum.”

Asked if the occupants gave fire officials any indication of what might have started the fire, Chief Wood says “the fellow was working in the attic yesterday (Friday), he had a halogen light in there but he figures he unplugged it.  So it appears he unplugged it and it fell over into the blown insulation and was smouldering most of the night.”

There is no estimate of the damage to the house.

There were no injuries to any of the approximate 20 firefighters, all of them volunteers, who fought the fire in minus 24 degree temperatures.

No injuries to firemen or occupants, a job well done, pat your selves on the back firemen and firewomen. Tough work under the best of conditions, particularly at this time of year. (Town resident)

Blown in Insulation was most likely Cellulose and that burns easy, Fiberglas does not, test it yourself on the Ground!

A huge shout out to all the people who volunteer to be part of these community firehalls…I have the pleasure to know many of them living in Pineview myself and cannot say thank you enough for putting your life on the line…. these people do not get paid for this job and in many cases it costs them their own dollars…A Huge Thank You again..

Yes, prov1, the volunteer fire departments rock!

Was a volunteer at one time, and sincerely appreciate all that the volunteers do. Well done, again! You folks Rock!

Thank-you! A job well done.(Another PG Town resident) ;)

Who blows in cellulose these days? That appears to be a pretty new house so I would hope that they blew in fibreglass!

Halogen lights are banned from some construction jobsites due to the fire hazard from them.
