250News Hits A New Record

Thursday, February 6, 2014 @ 4:00 AM

Prince George, BC – 250News has received a congratulatory e-mail from Jeff Paetkau, Manager of ABC Weblink, one of the major web hosting providers  in B.C.

Paetkau writes to say, " I'm not sure if you have checked your Google Analytics for January yet. You got over 1 Million page views!  Congratulations, that is a major milestone."

Again we wish to thank the readers of 250News who have made us reach that mark by reading us every day and by making 250News, their home page. It has been a struggle many times over the past eight years.

It speaks to a trend that we as news gathers are seeing in that as the traditional newspaper struggles to survive in a growing competitive market, the Internet continues to fill that vacuum. Truly it is a sign of the times. Just as FM radio took over the airwaves and spelled the doom of  most traditional  AM stations , internet news has turned the news industry upside down.

Thank you again for your help, this milestone is as much your accomplishment as ours.

Well thank YOU Ben and company for providing such a wonderful service to all of us. I’m sure the congratulations are well deserved.
You have built a service that we find that we have come to rely on and need everyday.

We truly appreciate it.

1 million page views !
I can’t believe Gus didn’t get special recognition. ;) Cheers 250ers.

Congratulations Ben and team. 250 News is
the first place that I go to in the morning to find out what is going on in our part of the world.

News on the internet (like this site) is growing because it’s free, whereas traditional newspapers are not.

If it wasn’t for AdBlock I doubt this site would be anywhere near where 1 million page views. I checked this site out on a hotel lobby computer a little while back and damn near had a seizure from all the ads. :)

Congratulations, with one caveat. Since the site has started doing an automatic page refresh does it count towards the increased numbers even if there is not a set of eyes on the screen? I think I already know the answer and the 1 million is somewhat inflated.

First place I go for local news as well. Congrats! I agree Gus should have got special recognition lol!

Congrats Ben.

Gus who?

The ads are an annoyance, but if they weren’t there, this site wouldn’t exist. And as axman says, Adblock works.

Congrats to Elaine and Ben. Keep it up.

Thank you to Ben and Elaine. I too, go to Opinion250 before my emails – but not before my morning coffee.

I understand there are two separate stats available for ‘page views’. One is for the total number of hits and the other is for the total number of IP address access points. I am taking the view that the number of views relate to IP accesses, but even if it was for total hits the statistic is still impressive.
You serve us well, Opinion250!

Readers from the Prince George Citizen, the newspaper & online versions, are leaving in droves, to conme here to get their news.

Nice that we can read the news without the egotistical, self serving, goose stepping right wing spin, Ben & Company!

This is news for the “people” and not the corporate elite, remember that and your readership will continue to grow!

You can also use Unique IP’s which we at 250news do.

A unique IP address is the number assigned to an internet service. It’s like the address for your home, your work. For example, with Northern Health they have about 12 different IP addresses serving about 7,000.

We do not use “hits” although we have in excess of 10 million “hits” per month. But it is easy to “fudge” the “hits” or “click throughs” for that matter, so we use the industry standard, which is Unique IP’s and page views.

If you take visits , factor in pages read, and then take the number of IP addresses that came to 250News in a given month, you find that the 1 million figure is very close.

Google has the tools and the expertise, we just take their figures and they have no reason to “fluff” any figure. They are not working for us.

As for the advertisements. Think about it, we have to pay staff, we have to go out to get the stories, we have to pay to have the internet connections and use.

How could you operate without the support that we receive from commercial activity? As someone said, you don’t pay for the service , how do you support it?

Hope that clears up any misunderstandings.

Only People#1 could turn a story about this site’s hit count into a political statement to further his personal agenda (once again – yawn!). It is not always about you, People#1.

page views. So is that just to the front page or all pages combined? Easily 1 person can generate 100 page views in a day by coming back here and just sifting through the stories, classifieds, different sections, etc. 1 million is a lot, but not so much when it comes to page views. That could be as little as 1000 actual ips a month. Just saying. I used to run websites back in the early days of the internet and it wasn’t uncommon to get 50,000 page views per day back in the mid 90s…sooooo

JB

The dipper mantra of Lib/Con bad ommmmm union good ommmmm Poverty ommmmm Big Business ommmmm seems to be on an endless loop in his/her/?’s head and about the only thing filling the void between the ears.

Good Morning JB and Ewitt (and everyone else)!

Recently the Kamloops newspaper shut down after many many years of operation. My good and esteemed friend “Peeps” was all over that dastardly company for shutting down, condemning the business for it’s decision to shut down and cause people to lose their jobs.

In my usual polite manner, I suggested that the demise of the Kamloops paper and many others might have something to do with more and more of us, including “Peeps” using sites like this one to get our news for free!

Well, of course “peeps” ridiculed me for my suggestion! And yet here we are on this bright clear and very cold morning with “Peeps” clearly supporting this site and once again condemning big bad business, the corporate elite and the like!

I’m really confused, but that’s normal for me. Are newspapers bad, or are they good? If they lay off employees and close down due to a loss of readership and revenue because more and more of us are using the internet, then are newspapers bad or is the internet news provider bad? I ask this as someone who uses sites like this for my news, but as someone who also subscribes to 5 different papers and 4 different magazines!

I’m not sure who or what “Peeps” is in support of now! I’m soooo confused! Need more coffee!!!

Nice that I make a comment and so many respond, I think I know how Wayne Gretzky felt every time he stepped onto the ice.

Love the amount time I spend inside your head’s boys!

It’s funny because he really believes it’s all about him. Thanks for confirming that, People#1!

And he compares himself to Wayne Gretzky! LOL. What an ego.

I believe it is called illusions of grandeur- with a hefty helping of bipolar on the side in this case.

LOL….you guys all work in the same office ?

‘Breaking News’ what a joke

Yes, just like Wayne Gretzky, it’s in the numbers, all the stories I comment on usually get the most comments. Look at the comment numbers on this story compared to the others.

My presence on this news blog has changed the commenting behaviour of others, right guys? Keep replying and watch the comment numbers go even higher ;-)

@People: Some advice: Tone down your delusions of grandeur. Maybe a little less time should be spent comparing yourself to Wayne Gretzky. A train wreck or car accident is more like it.

… or maybe a sack of hammers? ;-)

Notice Gus is very quiet about this.

I think the more intelligent readers will recognize the tactic I employed in my 12:10 comment… and it worked!

Good job Elaine and Ben, keep up the great job, changing the world one comment at a time.

I don’t know how the rest of you get on to this site, but I run it thru ABC’s Net Bistro site. I have been doing this for at least ten years. I get 99% of my news off this site, LOcal, Provincial,National and world.

as long as they focus on delivering the news, not personal opinions, it will remain popular.

The problem with what happened with the newspaper is,…. it becomes a tabloid, where the have to sensationalize the news so it will sell copies, in return it sells advertising.

If we’re not being called names, we’re in love with him. Which is it? It’s anybody’s guess.

Thanks Ben, Elaine and Opinion 250 staff. I check this site almost every day for the most up-to-date news and sometimes views of what is happening in 250 land. Keep up the good work!

I appreciate 250 and gus comments.

I simply love this news blog site! The news stories are posted at all hours, and as they break, which is impressive.

The band width, that limited the volume and length we could make comments on stories for a while in the past, seems to be fixed.

And there are signs of intelligent life of this site ;-)
