Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Civic Centre turned 20 on Tuesday, an occasion marked by speeches and a big birthday cake in the foyer of the building.

Mayor Shari Green was on hand to look ahead to the future of the facility while former councilor Don Basserman, who chaired the Civic Centre building committee at the beginning of the 1990s, says way back when a referendum was held on proceeding with “a concept called Discovery Place and it did not carry the day.  And so the new council that was elected in the fall of 1990, along with a whole lot of folks in the community, determined that is we were going to get the kind of facilities that would attract things like the Canada Winter Games, we would have to do it incrementally.”

“So a shopping list included, and many people talk about a list of five things but for me there were six, the civic centre, a new arena which is now CN Centre, the new pool, the art gallery, the field house which is now the Dr. Jago Sport Centre, and for many of us the performing arts centre was on that list of five, really six.  We’ve come a long ways down that path.”

Basserman explained how the project was tendered in three separate pieces, the ground works, building and plaza, because tendering one single large project would have exceeded the bonding capacities of most of the contracting companies in the city at that time.  Basserman says as it turned out, all three contracts went to local companies “and we were delighted that we were able to do that way to make it good for people here.”

Looking ahead Mayor Green says “we’ve got some improvements coming along the way that will have it really transform itself for the Canada Winter Games.  It will be re-named Civic Plaza and we’re really looking forward to this venue being the hub of it all for the athletes.  They’ll be coming here every day to have their breakfast and their dinner, and for some of them their lunch as well.  And this space will be full of nighttime enjoyment, we’ll have some medal ceremonies happening in the core, and it will be just an incredible place that everybody will want to be.”

Green noted the celebration coming up this Saturday at the new Kin 1 arena “as we celebrate another new facility in the city and the memories it’s going to bring as well.”

Comments

She looks hungry.

When I see her all I see are the bumpy roads and all the trouble people had driving…I do not like her!!

Is it just me??? Or is her nose getting longer>???

aww she looks beautiful

I was born and raised in PG. The roads are always bumpy EVERY YEAR. It’s never changed and never will. Move to the Okanagan where the roads are NOT bumpy (and contrary to popular belief there is NO sunshine tax).

The “hungry” comment and the “is her nose getting longer” comment are both rude rude rude and has NOTHING to do with the story.

Shame on you.

They paid diddly squat for wages in the OK as compared to elsewhere. Therefore there is a sunshine tax!

There is a sunshine tax, serious money to water lawns.

Agreed Newtechie. There are some who have nothing intelligent to say so they make comments on the mayor’s appearance in the story photo. Shame on the people making the comments and shame on this site for allowing such comments. Classless.

Agreed JB and new T…the Mayor is just the Mayor,,,did we ever see or here of such comments when Dan was in power???? Was he wearing the wrong tie….No…Colin…???. NO…. These comments are just rude and unaccepitble. Just because she is a woman they think they can hit her in the low spots..Woman have come farther than most ppl give them credit for….I get it…I am not happy with her either but quit the crap on her looks…Lets just deal with her municipal ethics.

Myself, I will be sad on Saturday watching Green cut the ribbon on the new Kin 1. I still believe that this was the way to go and not Shari’s Kin 4 stand alone arena.

Yes, Shari should not be attacked on her appearance. Criticize her on; the clueless way she performs her job, her directions and decisions that you may not agree with. But lets not attack her on her looks, and physical characteristics, that play no role in her lack of skills and abilities to perform her job as mayor!

The Civic Centre…a place that has brought many good memories to myself and my family, the fun we had at winter carnivals, the beautiful weddings we attended, the wide eyed children at the festival of trees, the Mennonite fall fairs, the craft shows, and of course my children standing proudly receiving awards during their graduation ceremonies. This is a place where tears shed are more that of joy and happiness, a warm, clean and safe place for the people of our community to gather. As for the critics above, sorry you missed out.

I am sorry to put a damper on your “warm, clean and safe place” view of the Civic Centre and it’s immediate surroundings, Evolution, but here is a dose of reality:

We have a sizeable homeless population in this city, and during the summer months, these people “litterally” defecate on the lawns around the four seasons pool. We have discussed this issue, and some of use agree, there is no public washrooms downtown that the homeless can access and use!

During the summer months, particularly, I have seen used needles and condoms in the Library’s underbuilding parking area.

We have to come togeather and work togeather, because our city has a great deal of social issues, and ills. We need people to stop glossing over these issues, and open their eyes to the reality that PG is still very much a dangerous city (ranked 14th in Canada).

I think many of us are getting tired of the public relations spin, which will no doubt grow, the closer we get to the Canada Winter Games.

Again, sorry to rain on your parade Evolution, but this is the reality of the situation. Yet I, and others, say we can change things, but it takes a caring City government that embraces the need for social development and engineering as a means to bring about social change in this City.

Yet here we have a City government that axes it’s social development department, maybe we need some balance between city business and city social issues at city hall?

The women has a knife in her hand cutting a cake… I can see a giggle in there and I don’t blame her, why not… I am sure the same could be said for Dan or Colin from time to time.

Maybe after a 10% here and a 10% there people could be forgiven for wondering if her nose is growing. I know for sure Harper’s has since he made it to the PMO… at least it appears that way to me.

With the deplorable conditions of our roads in late December and early January, and the way the Mayor conducted herself in taking responsibility for fixing the problems… one could be forgiven for holding a grudge only a month on, and making a point to say that when given an opportunity.

To say this is all some kind of sexism and not politically correct to call a spade a spade, because of the gender of the politician, is a low way to undermine free speech and honest political debate. I think its uncalled for to put that kind of chill out there on criticism or comments for a mayor of her responsibilities to the public. If one runs for office they shouldn’t be coddled and expect to be above comments from the peanut gallery, simply because of gender.

Myself I think city hall starting at the mayors office on down needs more open transparency that should encourage more public input into decision making on major capital expenditures. Case in point a quote form the above article where Don Basserman reminisced about how the voters turned down the proposal with the Performing Arts Center in 1990, but later incrementally approved a list of 5 projects, but really in his mind 6 projects including the shadow Performing Arts Center that, “for many of us the performing arts centre was on that list of five, really six. We’ve come a long ways down that path.”… so along ways down that path… that is exactly my point here, we are told one thing to get them elected, then given another once elected, and nowhere is there proper consideration given to public consent through democratic open and transparent processes… sell off the golf course, change from a Kin 4 to terminating a good Kin 1, build a PAC(easy all of it to forget when one has moved to Vernon and isn’t paying the ever increasing tax bill)… all these hidden agenda’s with no proper due consideration for public consent.

But we should all just shut our mouths? Say nothing but good things as the truth is revealed in their very words, as said politicians celebrate the logic for the next big spend.

Would it be more acceptable if they just came forward in a public debate on the issue followed by a democratic vote? I think so, and then maybe worthy of more dignified commentary as well.

IMHO

Sorry People#1, you’ve leveled your fun sucker gun at me and missed your shot. If you are truly putting people 1st, as your handle suggests, you would celebrate human successes along with your desire for social improvement. So, as I try to wrap my head around your perspective I find myself adopting a new persona. I now feel People#1 taking cheap shots at my most pleasurable experiences makes me want to stick a needle in my arm and escape her reality, then drop my rig in front of the library where some innocent child will pick it up and stick it in her eye, undoubtedly she will contract Hep-C and will live out the rest of her short life, half blind and on a Liver donor list.

Then, while I’m taking a dump in front of the Art Gallery I’ll case out the Civic Centre and pick my mugging mark…hey, that fat guy stinks of BIG OIL, he must have a wallet full of undeserved cash, I make my move, stick’em good with my rusty pen knife, just to get his attention, grabbed his wallet only to discover he really just works on the shipping/receiving dock at WalMart, withdrew all his savings to buy a nice suit to impress his family at his nieces wedding…whatever, at least I’m keep the most Dangerous City stat alive. If only some cash bloated Fat Cat CEO, or overpaid civil administrators would throw a few bones towards garbage cans and porta-potties my life would be so much better…just trying to understand your darkness Peeps#1.

Poop, needles and human tragedy can be found in any city, town or reservation in the world, it’s part of the societal equation, doesn’t make it right, and we should always look to help improving the lives of those who struggle, but throwing acid on my warm and fuzzy memories is classless and counter productive.

You’ve pointed out PG’s dark underbelly to someone who on a daily basis deals with the very people who chuck needles, defecate on lawns and in stairways, violently assault others over a $5 point or less, finds people ODed cold and blue, many have given up hope and want to end it all. I have seen the deplorable conditions they live in, I know the putrid smell of Meth, Crack, Heroin, the cupric smell of pools of blood, I see the drug induced nods, just short of death. I’m not alone, I’m one of many first responders who go where no one goes to preserve life. I’m helping by putting boots on the ground, 24/7/365. If I had to come home to your miserable dark reality I would most certainly become ineffective, I cling to the good things that surround us, the “warm, clean and safe place”, there is always room for improvement but I refuse to give up on the good that already exists.

Sorry I’m posting this at 4am, had to author it between the chaos.

“The “hungry” comment and the “is her nose getting longer” comment are both rude rude rude and has NOTHING to do with the story.”

I am not sure why you do not consider the picture part of the tory. It was taken for the story, it was posted with the story, not some other story or not included at all.

Someone sure considered it to be part of the story, newtechie. Surely you should be able to figure out that it IS part of the story…

Then again, maybe the picture is the story, and the words aren’t….

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, eh??? :-)
==================================

As far as the nose comment …. Pinocchio had a similar problem …. Perhaps Stillsmokin wanted to remind us all of that……

Geez… ask a question and then it makes headlines. You guys should go out shovel your driveway to keep busy.I was just asking about the picture.

Rogers was in only for one term because of how he managed the City.. How do you think Green will fare??

Asking questions always makes headlines. By asking questions one stands out in a crowd.

Just hold back and listen. Nobody will notice you that way. :-)

Sure, those comments are somewhat rude and below the belt, but isn’t it also rude to state that those who express a different point of view should move and look for greener (no pun intended) pastures somewhere else?

How about admitting that the first step in fixing some of the obvious problems is to recognize them for what they are?

Have to agree with Evolution! The Civic Centre is a great place and a great asset.

Thanks gus.. good plan.. yesss asking questions always inspires thoughts. It is good that people can express their thoughts without fear of reprisal.. We should should all be thankful for that, for many countries do not have that luxury.

PrinceGeorge has a good point too. People should have an open mind.. Politicians fully know they would encounter a lot when they first decided to run for office. Green is no exception. Whether it be her appearance, or her performance, I’m sure she realizes that a lot will be said about it.

That being said, lets go enjoy our day

As far as the personal comments on her looks go, coming from anonymous sources they don’t mean anything anyway. Imagine if they were brought forth at say.. a candidates forum. “Ms. Green, you look quite hungry and by the way, is your nose getting longer?”..
That would probably have more meaning.
Evolution’s comment is a damn good one. We most definitely do need to reward ourselves for our successes, and it sounds like Evolution sees society from perspectives that most of us don’t. People#1 may do well to take some advice.

Can’t attack the policies, attack the person. Or sumthin’ like that.

All of you grumpy, old men are showing your true colors by attacking the mayor’s looks. Shame on all of you. If she was a man you would never go there so grow up! I am sure that your wives are very proud of you. Talk about a classless bunch!!!

shhhhh you guys..opinionated is female.. Anyone else wanna come outta the closet???hahaha

Oh yeahh… like anyone cares… Right, you grumpy old men???

From earlier 250News:

“In all the Prince George Civic Centre has hosted more than 11-thousand events in its 20 years of operation and, the City says, has created an economic impact of approximately $100 million on the local economy.”

Let’s not forget about that! Even if it is just a rough estimate it is an impressive number. It is also a clean industry.

Regardless of how much money is involved, or how many events it’s held, it’s still a nice facility to have and use. Sooo it’s been twenty years.. let’s celebrate that fact..

Just think how much money a PAC will add to the local economy….. we really ought to think about building a larger convention centre as well.

All kidding aside, I want to see the calculations for that.

Let us start with the rental rate that the facility pays to the City for the tax money the City used to build the building and has paid off ….. maybe since it is 20 years old they could have a “mortgage” or loan agreement burning party … or maybe they have had one already.

Once we figured that little matter out that any level of government never looks at, let’s consider the rest of the money which we think is spent locally, but much of it is leaked away from the city to producers of good and services elsewhere.

Once one strips local labour costs from businesses in PG, much of the rest leaks to head offices, banks, some maintenance items as well as alterations to facilities.

One thing I am sure of, government are incapable of doing true cost accounting.
