Thieves drove through the mall's south entrance en route to a smash-and-grab at Paris Jewellers   250News photo

Prince George, BC – It was a rude awakening for Pine Centre Mall General Manager, Sonya Hunt, early yesterday morning…

Just before 4am, Hunt received a call from RCMP informing her of a break-in at the mall – the thieves drove through the glass doors at the mall's south entrance, and continued down the corridor to ram through the security gate at Paris Jewellers.  (click here for previous story)  After smashing numerous glass cases to clean out the contents inside, the robbers hopped back into their stolen Jeep Cherokee and made off before police arrived.

Hunt says the robbery is similar to many brazen heists that have occurred on the Lower Mainland and in Alberta.  She says she's thankful the mall was closed at the time.  And it's proved to be a wake-up call on the security front.

Hunt says the mall will be exploring its options in light of the 'drive in' break-and-enter.  The south entrance doors open fully to allow raffle vehicles in to be showcased in the mall.  She says they'll have to find an accomodating security system.

Hunt credits police for ensuring the mall was able to open as scheduled yesterday morning, only Paris Jewellers remained closed, with a note it would remain that way until further notice.

When they catch these turkeys send them to a US prison where they will do some serious time. For a crime like this you would most likely get 15 years down there instead of the 6 to 18 months up here.

Totally agree!!!

Sounds they have been playing GTA V. They did the crime in Canada not the US, turkeys.

Something should have been done before this incident, based on the theft at Spruceland recently. Management dropped the ball big time.

Where was the security?????????

Drive inside pine centre mall and you’ll decide it’s the mall for you ;)

Add movable (up/down) concrete barriers. Similar to how Europe / USA have them.

The solution is fairly simple.

The drive through break-ins depend on inertia of the vehicle used … speed and weight ….. you can only gain that with a head on entry ….

Put bollards where the yellow tape is looking something like the linked picture ….

Leave enough space behind so that if one wants to drive a display vehicle into the building, it comes in from either side along the sidewalk and makes a sharp turn into the doors.

The doors will have to be a bid wider to accommodate the turning radius, or the doors can be splayed inwards or outwards by 30 or so degrees to accommodate the tight turn.

They should have done that at the time they gave the thing a facelift a few years ago. These kinds of problems were relatively well known then.

You guys remember about 6 months ago, the Enbridge office put big concrete planters in front of the office ?

But those are just for decorative purposes.

There have been planters at Spruceland for the same purpose …but there is too much space between and even when they would space them according to the storefront openings, they would have to relocate them whenever stores relocate and entries or large curb to ceiling windows are installed.

Yes, there are a lot of nutbars out there. What was your point?

Uhhh, you’re slipping JB. The point is large concrete planters can be used to help prevent vehicles from being driven through the front doors of a building.

I apologize for being so vague.

Uhh, thanks for the tip. My point was that it would be nutbars who would drive into an office building like that. Carry on.

Bolt the barn door AFTER the horses have run off. What’s old is still new again. Eh?

This should do it!

was this the same crew of 5 that attacked the two little native girls at the mall last weekend? I witnessed 5 adults attack two handicapped native girls after calling them retards at the mall on Feb 8th and the security kicked the two little girls out. The group then attacked them again at princess auto bus top across the street. Recognized one was a female Walmart clerk. Heard the driver of the truck was a professional thief known to police. They looked violent and like trouble! Apparently a passerby recognized the driver and said he steals trucks. Is this the same guy I wonder?

western2: they sound like really classy people!

middle finger: I don’t think everyone missed your point.

Too bad that big heavy roof structure couldn’t just be lowered after they got inside!

Western2: Should go to mall management with this complaint. I am sure the mall has video surveliance to back your story up in the mall. VERY DISRACEFUL the mall security kicked the 2 young disabled ladies out instead of dealing with the arrogant 5 some!!!.

Yeah. But I only seen one side of the story. I would hate to be wrong and the two girls did something. What I saw was the walmart lady pull up in the truck and start teasing the girls and then jump out and start waling on the one. Who knows what caused her and the others to do it? What disturbed me was his spitting on the kid. That is why I wondered if the two young girls know something about this smash and grab. I helped her as did about 12 other people and she told us who this group was and others reported the license plate number. The guy looked like a gang member. The spitting guy was the driver. Just curious because we hear the jeep was stolen. Two guys stayed in the truck and didn’t get out. A white pickup with a 4″ lift extended cab.
