Rigs Tie Up Traffic At Highway Intersection

Sunday, February 16, 2014 @ 5:19 PM

Prince George, B.C. – There was a little traffic chaos at the intersection of Highways 97 and 16 this afternoon.

Shortly before 4pm a couple of big rigs ended up getting a little too cozy on the western side of Highway 16.

It did not appear anyone was hurt in the incident.  However, after some inspection the deriver of one of the transports decided his trailer needed to be unhitched.

Police conducted traffic control as the outside lane of 16 west was blocked, both to traffic coming through from 20th Avenue and from traffic merging from Highway 97 southbound.

Yep, CN truck turned west onto Hwy16 from the south and turned right into the far right merge lane coming off of 97 and right into the side of the Fairchild rig. Some drivers think turning left into the far right lane is OK. It is not! You must turn left into the left lane you dummies!

Here is another CN rig from this past winter. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/sledhed/IMG_0272_zpsf2092764.jpg

As you say, not only into the right lane, but into the third lane which is the merge lane which he should never have been in.

So, was this a blind guy?

Was this a rig going too fast in the turn?

Was there a mechanical problem?

I think we need to have some follow ups on these incidents. If there is reporting of a ton of crashes, at least let the peanut gallery know what the conclusion is …. who was ticketed and why? Is that not public information?

I assume we can only learn from knowing what to watch out for when we are driving on the local roads and highways.

Not pulling a trailer you go to right lane so trailer clears the meridian dummie, this gay went to far right

Sry guy,my bad spelling

I am not surprised to see CN on the side of the tractor that is in the wrong. I watch them all week blast through Pineview school zone daily.I even called CN ..no change. Makes me wonder, do they even care ???

This is an easy peasey left turn and can be easily done into the correct left lane when doing the correct speed.

Only if you know how to drive ,many don’t. Curious though, renewing my license it said on the back was an interpreter used to obtain this license. if one was, does that mean you cant read English ???? and how the hell can you understand road signs ?? signed,,, baffled.

accidents happen.

I was about to enter the merge lane whe this happened so I know the details. The CN truck broke down after it turned (it was in the 1st and 2nd lanes, not the merge lane). The Fairchild truck had been turning behind the CN truck but would have blocked the whole intersection. He went around the CN truck into the merge lane to try and go around but there wasn’t enough room. He unhitched his trailer so he could pull the CN truck off to the side. Just a note: the idiots behind me were honking like crazy even though there was nowhere for any of us to go. I called the police to get some traffic control and it took over 15 minutes for anyone to show up.

The CN tractor is clearly in the merge lane.

His nose was in the merge lane. Regular traffic had enough room to go around. The one picture above was after he was towed.

Armyash, thank you for the accurate report. The peanut gallery loves to go on about things they have no knowledge of.

The CN truck is in the merge lane with the Fairchild tractor still hooked to his trailer …it is what it is findme.

So we have a guy who was there, and then we have you monkey.

Look at the picture,,,where is the CN tractor ?certainly just not the nose , almost the whole dam thing .I rest my case .

Maybe you and dragonmaster can investigate this together.

Where is the truck route that this city was supposed to get years ago….like Kamloops got years ago.

Armyash should be hired as a opinion250 reporter. Would of had the proper facts on the story instead of assumptions and then finger pointing towards the drivers (and CN).

Armyash, you know the details from your physical point of view, which, by your description would be from the HWY 97 side. We do not have pictures which show the after the fact POV from all access to the intersection, only one. You also only has one POV.

The top picture on this story shows the viewpoint of the camera stationed on HWY 16. In my opinion that is the better POV from which to determine whether the CN truck was in the proper lane. The cab was clearly in the merge lane, not the one middle lane and certainly not in the inside left lane where, it has been pointed out, vehicles making that turn should be in. However, given the angle of the turn, it is likely very difficult, if not impossible to make a legal turn there with a semi.

The idiots behind you also had their own POV, which likely did not include a good vision of what had happened in front of you.

DPJ, if you think that armyash had the proper facts, I sure would not want to make you responsible for the accuracy of any news service or incident investigation for that matter.

Which still leaves the question, why would the CN driver have his cab sitting about halfway into the merge lane when that is a lane restricted for the use of traffic merging from the north part of HwY97?

Here is a larger version of the picture to the left above.

It looks to me that the frozen old windrow in the right side of the merge lane that the Fairchild cab is straddling is encroaching on the normal width of the merge lane. If that is true, then that would not have helped in this situation either.

People relax…when the truck broke down he was probably trying to coast to the side of the road but didn’t quite make it. He was more than likely aiming for the merge lane to get out of everyone’s way.

Wow, you guys have way too much time on your hands, lol. Way to beat a small story to death!

I only posted because the reporter stated that they got a little too cozy and one of the transports decided his trailer needed to be unhitched, which wasn’t true. He unhitched to tow the broken down semi, and they were “cozy” because the rear semi couldn’t remain in the intersection. I had no idea Sherlock and Watson would be all over every word I wrote! haha

Omg -get a life people. Why must you go on and on and on.

and on and on and on ….

I am not sure …. why must others care what people do??? You our nursemaid?? ;-)

What do you mean… we still haven’t gotten the perspective from the water tower and what people may have been thinking on that side of the intersection?

I’ll bet there was more than a few of them that thought the truck drivers did this on purpose because they could… and because they knew it would make someone really late for sure…. Can you imagine trying to head west, and oh no these damn truckers are playing games again blocking the road, then being forced to make a left and not knowing how to get back off the highway… conspiracy or coincidence, you be the judge….

And I, armyash, only posted to your comment about the cab not being in the merge lane because, as can clearly be seen from the pictures, that was not true. That is why several people had posted that simple image evidenced fact prior to you posting that those observations were wrong.

Just shows how much difficulty those investigating incidents have with “eye” witnesses.

If people were thinking, they were not paying attention to “driving”. They should all have been ticketed ….

“called the police” for traffic control. Hope you used hands free or you will get a distracted ticketlol

See even when a truck driver does something to help clear the roadway all the haters will still get their panties in a knot and make the truckers look bad… The 15 minutes it took police to get there, the fairchild truck probably already had cn off the road and was ready to hook back up to his own trailer. Had a tow truck been called it would have taken at least an hour to clear the road. This 250 reporter should have done their due diligence and found out the situation instead of just pictures and assumptions from afar.
