Early Spring Move For RCMP

Thursday, February 20, 2014 @ 5:03 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The physical distance is only about seven city blocks but the reality of getting the Prince George RCMP detachment moved into its new home is a longer journey.

The move from the current 42-year-old police building on Brunswick Street to the brand new$38.95 million headquarters at 4th and Victoria isn’t ready to proceed yet.  Originally occupancy of the building was to have taken place last October.  Then, that was set back to the end of the year.  Next, a move-in date of the end of January, 2014, was discussed but not met.  RCMP brass, city dignitaries and local media toured the shiny building in November but reaching the point of moving the troops in has proven elusive.

The City's Public Safety and Civic Facility Manager Leland Hansen says “I don’t have an actual move-in date yet.  We’re expecting keys to the place anytime in the next two weeks.  In other words we got substantial completion from inspectors in December and we’re expecting occupancy anytime now.  But in an RCMP detachment it doesn’t mean you move over.  RCMP “E” Division comes in and does a bunch of fit-out and that takes four or five weeks.  They’ve started a bit of that already but once I get a time from “E” Division as to when their final processes are going to be I’ll start scheduling the actual moving.”

Hansen says the “E” Division fit-out involves “bringing in their computers,  programming security systems, setting up their phone systems.  And it all has to be cleared, not just from Vancouver but Ontario as well, and that all takes time.”

Hansen says the actual physical move from Brunswick Street to the new building will all be done in about a week’s time.  He believes it will be early spring when the RCMP and civilian staff move into their new digs.

They knew all this stuff going in, so whey don’t they just say they are 5 months behind on completing the project.

Wow. that’s almost as slow as them executing a search warrant.

So if they have to set up computers and a bunch if “security” stuff, my guess is another three months ;)

Spring starts March 21st or so …. that means early spring would be anytime up to May 1. If it is between then and June 21, it would be late spring.

My bet is late spring it is.

Key dates would have been

1. substantial completion of the building

2. total completion of the building (the construction deficiencies list would all have been completed)

3. Commissioning of the building (training the technical building operations and maintenance staff at the City on how the building operates)

4. E division installing all furnishing, equipment etc. which will likely be mostly new as opposed to moving items over from the old facility

5. Instructing local RCMP staff on any new equipment and furnishings that requires special instruction.

6. Moving all common office files as well as personal files and items over.

I think they also have not installed the living wall(s) yet, so do not know whether that is E-division responsibility or part of the construction contract.

Also, not all of those dates are sequential. Some operations can be parallel. In fact, total completion of the building as well as commissioning could occur after staff have moved in and working out of the building.

Those front doors look kinda susceptible to me in the pic. They’ll be OK as long as they don’t have a little jewellery shop just inside the doors.IMO.

I suspect that there are rocks or bollards at the end of the walkway behind the camera position, just as there are along the walkway. They are there primarily for protection of the sort you wrote about, Harbinger.
