New Prosperity Mine Project Rejected By Feds

Wednesday, February 26, 2014 @ 6:47 PM

Williams Lake, B.C.- The New Prosperity Mine proposal has been rejected, again.

In her  decision, Federal Minister of the Environment, Leona Agluqqak, says  the project, as proposed,  is likely to cause irreversible environmental damage .

"The Government of Canada will make decisions based on the best available scientific evidence while balancing economic and environmental considerations," said Minister Aglukkaq.  The Minister added, "The Government will continue to make responsible resource development a priority and invites the submission of another proposal that addresses the Government's concerns."

This is the third time the project has been rejected.

Taseko Mines  had proposed  an open pit operation near Fish Lake.  Initially the project was rejected because of  potential damage to that lake.

Taseko came back with a second proposal, one which  did  not  put the same pressure on Fish Lake, but the Review  Panel rejected  that plan saying it would still  cause  significant harm to the Fish Lake watershed.  Taseko  launched court  action,  saying the decision was based on faulty information.

Taseko Mines says the project,  proposed  for an area about  125 kilometers southwest of Williams Lake, would  have created about 550 direct jobs.

No future for the mills here and apparently no future for mining either.

If they got some mining engineers and owners who knew what they were doing then there would be mining. Why should this country suffer from the consequences of shoddy mining practices just so that others in the world can get access to cheap feedstock and companies can make a “killing”?

This is not the Congo quite yet.

Bring it on Gus…..lol

Then after these companies are done, they leave toxic polluted work sites and the clean up costs for us taxpayers. All with the complete blessing of our own govt!

But that’s OK as long as the millionaire owners make their profits.

Hey people#1 will be in shock that the evil corporation supporting conservatives turned down the mine.

“Irreversible environmental damage” my a$$. We really need to start asking ourselves some questions, questions like; why does this Harper Government Environment Minister reject Prosperity Mine based on “irreversible environmental damage” likely occurring, yet approve Shell’s Jackpine oil sands mine expansion despite a review panel’s assessment that “irreversible environmental damage” will occur? Are there double standards here? Or is this government just being hypocritical?

“A review panel concluded last July that the project was in the public interest but warned that it would result in severe and irreversible damage so great that new protected areas should be created to compensate.”

“The review concluded that the project would mean the permanent loss of thousands of hectares of wetlands, which could harm migratory birds, caribou and other wildlife and wipe out traditional plants used for generations.”

“It also said Shell’s plans for mitigation are unproven and warned that some impacts would probably approach levels that the environment couldn’t support.”

Yup, when Big Oil runs our government and country, it gets a free pass for irreparable environmental destruction, Gold Mines not so much… but they do get a free pass for human rights violations abroad. Don’t you just love our country? Time to wake up Sheeple!!!

seamut, do you think that maybe this was just that evil Harper doing something to shut Peeps up, once and for all??

I’m envisioning Peeps flying to Ottawa in a carbon burning jet so that he can personally give Harper a big hug! Maybe they’ll become best buds! Naw, probably not, Harper has better taste than that!

Doubt they have the will power to try again after 3 rejections.

Can’t debate my comments anymore Hart Guy? Yeah, I am sorry I turned you into a common troll, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Peeps, you should be glad some are still bothering to read your comments. You haven’t said anything new in ages, other than the same old broken record anti-Harper garbage.

aaaaaw… my favorite little dog Chester is following me around and yipping as well. Always commenting on my comments.

I am sorry so many of my comments, supported by researched facts, make your Lib-Con governments appear in such a bad light, but isn’t it the truth that needs to come out?

Peeps, it’s late and tomorrow morning comes early. Some of us actually have to work for a living! We don’t live on welfare and we don’t get to spend our entire day searching for internet articles to support our own ideology.

So, tomorrow after a long day of work, I will come back here and respond to your witty little comment. I’ll do this even though whenever I have challenged you to a debate and have presented you with a well thought out, well reasoned and rational opinion/argument, you revert to name calling, bullying, insults and other antisocial behavior which is then followed by your rapid rush back under your rock to hide and shudder like the timid little person that you seem to be.

Good night Peeps!

P.S. – Have you given any thought to my earlier suggestion about leaving this wonderful Harper governed country and moving to whatever country that would lower their standards enough to let you in??

Like I said earlier, don’t let the door hit you on the a$$ on your way out!

Hart guy, good post.

When you have the time, Hart Guy, you might find this article interesting

When you students have the time, here is some required reading;

“When you exchange ideas with other students through the discussion boards, the coursework becomes more engaging, and you will become both a self learner and collaborator with your peers.”

“The online instructor will use the forum to help the student to develop an understanding of the coursework. Students will gain a better understanding of coursework through responding on the discussion boards, because the teacher will pose thought provoking inquiry based questions that are directly formulated from the required reading material.”

I posed a thought provoking question above, “why the rejection of one natural resource extraction project based on “irreversible environmental damage” yet the approval of another that will cause “irreversible environmental damage” on an even more massive scale?

Please students… research and respond, please, at least attempt to learn here. I am providing you with an opportunity that most will never get, make the most of it. ;-)

“why the rejection of one natural resource extraction project based on “irreversible environmental damage” yet the approval of another that will cause “irreversible environmental damage” on an even more massive scale?”

Little kids common question …. Why, mommy? ….Why daddy?

You are the student of life …. Many of us on here MAY have a few decades on you. The common answer would be BECAUSE.

In this case, because that is the way of the world of politics and the world of every case being a unique case since people are not machines.

On top of that, we are all selective in what we care about, what time we have to explore issues, and what issues we can effect.

I know someone who is going to stand in front of the pipeline when/if it gets built. Bless that person. That is not my style. Perhaps it is yours.

Finally, you have shown time and time again that you are not an objective thinker. Your mind is made up. You have not learned the basics of how to learn.

There is a pipeline on Harpers agenda the mine project just a casualty.Highland Valley mine started in 1969 still running today, 3 lakes in the valley are gone. However 2000 people have been employed for over 40 years. They were good fishing lakes unlike Fish Lake in the Chilcotin, its fish have lice, soft and lake is shallow. May look good on TV that’s about it. The Chilco Lake provincial park was created in 1994 which was a trade off to ensure the mine could proceed. So that’s out the window and still have the park which covers a vast area this is crap.

Great article, gus… describes Peeps to a tee.

Good points Steph. Sad news for the whole province, but most unfortunate for the Chilcotin and the native Indians there. No one gets $30 an hour for having cookouts at Fish lake (except the chiefs of course).

Dragon: “No, actually it was Gaal that shut down the snow removal, not the union. The union did their job.”

In other words, they did it poorly on purpose. And I haven’t seen much improvement since then.
—————————————

LMAO! Do you even read your own writing? They did what poorly? They weren’t out there during the time we are talking about, (Jan 4 – 5th). How could they do something poorly when they weren’t even on the job JB. Losing your mind JB?

Oh and I’m pretty sure Gus’s link above wasn’t describing People#1. Look in the mirror JB.

I think this is good news for the area’s wildlife and local indigenous peoples. The Highland Grizzly, a threatened species, keeps it habitat. The local indigenous people get to have that choice of living off the land. Seph describes the state of fish farm fish, yet the locals can still eat these local wild fish.

Interesting perspective they have, one needs only food off the land, water and shelter to exist and live. Everything else on top of that (the way we live) is nothing more than gravy! Who are we to deny a people the basics in life?

Dragon: “Oh and I’m pretty sure Gus’s link above wasn’t describing People#1.”

I’m pretty sure it was. But to speak more generally, many people aren’t emotionally equipped to deal with others who might have a different perspective or opinion than theirs. You following me around from thread to thread proves this.

But peeps if we didn’t have mines you would not have your stuff. Can you rub two sticks together for fire. Can you kill your own food let alone find it.

Get your comments in while you can peeps. After the cra audits reveal funding abuses by US foundations, your stipend to troll these sites will be cut off. Ever used a hammer to make a living?

JB states; “…many people aren’t emotionally equipped to deal with others who might have a different perspective or opinion than theirs. You following me around from thread to thread proves this.”

I think everyone here knows that is what you do to me JB, following me around from post to post, poking snide superficial comments about my comments. You have no real original thoughts of your own, do you?

@Peeps: I believe what you’re doing is called ‘projection’. Please shift your focus away from me and answer some of the other posts, mmkay?

I think things are coming to a head here on this discussion board. gus states; “On top of that, we are all selective in what we care about, what time we have to explore issues, and what issues we can effect.”

Perhaps I just have more time, or I care about more topics, than most when it comes to the issues I explore and the issues I think I can effect. But just because I have that greater capacity does not turn me into some “inconsiderate or negative jerk”.

I will continue to reas3earch and present the truths and facts on certain issues and current events stories that come up on this news site, if you can’t keep up, so be it, just don’t attack me because of your own short comings.

Why is it that some cannot accept the ideasof others but have to come up wih some smartass remarks that are completly ignorant and objectionable.

Remember being a smartass only degrades your own image.
Cheers

How about all you fundamentalists get each other’s emails and bicker somewhere else?

Look at what issues you have effected in the world, in Canada, in this province and/or in Prince George.

I do not see from any of your posts that you would ever have been in a position to effect any of those.

Perhaps you might have had an effect on your neighbours.

So far, you have not changed anyone’s mind on here about any issue from what I can tell.

I take that back. You probably have hardened some of the points of view they held before you pestered them. LOL

Truth and facts from a strongly biased and closed mind unable or unwilling to digest New information.

There is no other place to bicker. All other sites are very civil, everyone sticks to the rules of the blog.

People know this is the bickering site. LOL ….

If anyone believes my first paragraph, you have not been to any other publicly accessible blog and you have not read the link I posted. :-)

Further to the earlier link by gus this might help people#1 open his eyes a little bit.

http://lifehacker.com/how-to-train-your-mind-to-think-critically-and-form-you-1516998286

people#1’s posts are nothing more than an online equivalent of a dog lifting it’s leg and wizzing on every tire that crosses it’s path, marking territory and hoping to get into occasional scrap- that never turns out well.

I think most will agree, that I spend a lot of time researching and presenting linked evidence on this site.

http://images.sodahead.com/profiles/0/0/3/1/5/0/1/7/1/evo-131629848624.jpeg#evo

And as gus pointed out a while ago people have to know something about the subject they are researching and judging by most of your links you must have a HUGE pile of comic books in your bedroom.

See you already lifted your leg on the other Prosperity story.

The constant bickering and one-upman-ship is tedious and boring, and yes, I do get drawn into it on occasion with the usual suspects.

I sometimes wonder if this site would be better with the comment sections turned off completely.

Your !way out there! comments and getting the last post in on the thread require it. You should really read and comprehend others comments before you post your own. It may enable you to look a little more intelligent. Your comments are always very consistant in telling others what they should do and never contribute anything of substance to any discussion. There I’m done with ya!

Dragon, I am aware of what I wrote. It is not my fault you can’t understand it.

I am not going to walk you through the details and re-state the points I made, I have better things to do.

Dragon: “Your comments are always very consistant in telling others what they should do and never contribute anything of substance to any discussion.”

If that’s the way you feel, then by all means please stop reading my comments. It’s clear that you can’t handle those with a different viewpoint than your own. Best to stay in your own litle bubble where everyone agrees with you.

jb you dont have a view point. all you dom is drivell.
Cheers

Children.

“all you dom is drivell”

I have no idea what that means but I’m going to slip it randomly into conversations. :)
