WHL Says Cougars Not Sold
Tuesday, March 4, 2014 @ 2:22 PM
Prince George, BC- A spokesperson for the Western Hockey League in Calgary today responded to the rumour of the Prince George Cougars being sold, and as well a proposed move by the club.
The Western Hockey League says there is nothing before them about any sale, nor is there a request to move the team. Any proposed purchase and any proposed transfer of the club would have to come before the league's governors and there has been no such application.
Rumours swirled around the community in the past few weeks that the hockey club had been sold to a group of local investors and a number of former Cougar players now with the NHL.
The Vice President of the Cougars,Brandi Brodsky, earlier denied that the club had been sold.
Comments
Brodsky era is done. Book it. Offer to sell was made.
Good to see 67 comments on original story. Maybe there is a little passion for the Brodskyless Cougars after all.
But Lou gone to the Panthers.
If the Cougars moved back to Victoria would anybody notice?
If they did then the city has its PAC!
The WHL is under no obligation to tell anyone anything so I suspect they would remain silent on the situation until it was finalized, if in fact such a proposal was out there.
Common sense would tell me that IF a sale was going to occur, it would go through and be announced after the current season is done, as to mitigate any further distraction to the Cougars as they play out the rest of the season and/or the league as they head into playoffs, etc.
WHL….. sure, reliable source……sure. Chilliwack is not moving………….sure..not before the moving vans show up!!!
This isn’t just people pulling names out of thin air saying they bought the team. More than one source has reported the same thing. Usually where there is smoke, there is fire. There are many variables and reasons why this could fall through but until money exchanges hands, I completely understand why all parties involved are denying.
Our house has been more excited and hopeful about the PG Cougars in the last couple of days than in the last several years. If the sale goes through, we’ll be back.
walk through the cn centre. offices cleaned out. Final details to be finalized. The league (whl) has the final approval on every sale and until the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed the deal is not done. The league, I am almost sure, they want the present ownership out of the league. This going to happen.
We might need a bigger arena
From a source who claims this is inside knowledge gospel:
“The deal is done and the Cougars are moving to Winnipeg”
Maybe the money has not changed hands yet.
And as NMG says, they surely would not make it official until after the team’s season is finished.
Just another rumour?
Who knows.
metalman.
I don’t buy the move at all.
If, for one second, the league would allow the team to relocate to a large urban market such as Nanaimo or Winnipeg, why would Brodsky sell? Why wouldn’t he just move the team himself?
Also, former players and a local ownership group probably would not move their purchase halfway across the country. One would assume they would purchase the team to keep it local and prevent Brodsky from relocating the team as it has been rumored to be the case for years now.
The WHL board of govenors are not going to release any information. It really is non of the general publics required knowledge. If the transaction is happening, It is between the Brodsky’s, new owner and the board of govenors at the WHL. Those are the only people that needs to know.
We will find out soon enough.
Is Brodskey and clan holding out for a much as they can suck out of this?
They know as things stand now, the team isn’t worth much…they might be smarter and much more liked to take the offer and move!
If you stop and think about it. They can move the team to Winnipeg, and leave us with a black eye in the opinion of the WHL.
It might be where, the organization may just have to start from scratch and apply for a franchise and see if they would be granted one. It will require a lot of support from its fan base, where they get a commitiment of at least 50% of the seats sold as season ticket holders plus minimum three years support.
Nothing will be done till end of the season, which should be fairly soon as the coughs won’t make the playoffs again, 21 rebuilding years so far
“21 rebuilding years so far”
Thats funny – some of the current roster wasnt even born when the rebuilding process begain…

What you say makes sense, I agree.
metalman.
He spoke, going from memory, I think that’s what happened with Tri-Cities. I believe the owner wanted to move the team to Vancouver, but they also had a local ownership group that wanted to keep the team in Tri-Cities. To resolve the situation, I recall the team being sold to the local group and then an expansion franchise was awarded to the previous owner for Vancouver.
Is it that much if a stretch to think that a similar arrangement could happen in PG? I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see a two part deal out of all if this.
