Prince George, B.C.-  Street sweeping operations  in  Prince George could start as early as this week.

The annual  clean up will see crews working to remove between 15 thousand and 20 thousand tonnes of  sand and gravel from the roads,  material that was  put in place for extra traction over the winter.

“As we transition out of winter, and when temperatures permit, full sweeping operations will be running 24 hours per day, Monday to Friday ” says Mick Jones, Supervisor of Streets Operations with the City.

Street sweeping will start  on streets and sidewalks downtown,  then  move to  arterial and collector roads  before  hitting the residential areas of the city.

Machinery used to  clean up the aggregate includes:

• Loader and backhoe brooms for removing the bulk of the material from streets.

• Mechanical sweepers for removing the remaining material and
• Water flushing and regenerative air sweepers for cleaning up finer particles

According to the City's website,  once the downtown has been completed,  street sweeping will start in area 11, then proceed  through to  area 15 before starting back  at  the lower numbered areas.  Of course  the operations all depend on the  amount of  snow melted back from the  roadway in  most neighbourhoods.

Funny, I don’t remember seeing a sweeper ever operating in any of the outlying areas.

I don’t remember that either.

Sure hope it is cleaned properly this year. Every year it is so nice after they clean the roads, but, last year there was just dried mud left on the roads and you couldn’t even see the pavement and it was AWFUL! This year, if that happens again I will complain to the city. There was no reason for the mud they left last year.

Are they going to sweep the snow and ice still on my street?

So zones 12 and 13 will be swept before zones 8 and 9 ? Of course, everyone knows summer comes to the Hart 2 or 3 weeks before it gets to the south end of town.
? ? ? ?

It is good to know the plows are now done. Given the conditions of the streets this winder I thought they were done last November.

If rain is in the forecast I’m sure the city will sweep vigorously before any nasty dust reducing rain can be of any help. Take a deep breath. Free bus rides in sweeping zones with air quality and all?

aren’t they going to wait till the gravel gets to a certain depth? We could save alot of money if we wait till it’s 4-5 inches deep.

{Sarcasm Off}

There are streets all over the city still with snow and ice. How do you sweep that? We have been looking at houses for sale in different areas in town and there was a street in the Hart where we actually just about got stuck. Didn’t look like it had been plowed all winter.
