22 Year Old Woman Driver Of Truck That Hit Power Pole
Thursday, March 20, 2014 @ 1:21 PM
Prince George- A 22 year old New Hazelton woman escaped serious injury today when the pickup she was driving plowed into a power pole on Massey Drive , severing the pole at its base .
The young female was in possession of a learners license.
Police say alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Police say the three occupants in the vehicle were not hurt because the power lines remained intact.
The west bound lane on Massey near Carney is expected to be closed most of the day as Hydro crews work to replace the pole.
Comments
She should be made to walk back home to New Hazelton and think about what her life would have been like if instead of a hydro pole, that had been an innocent bystander or a car carrying a child. Lots of time to reflect on how she’d deal with one of her friends in the car being killed because of her stupidity.
I hope it’s a nice long time before she’s allowed to apply for a new licence.
Yes, a VERY LONG TIME!
She will get suspended by the supt of motor vehicles for sure. along with getting the s*&t sued out of her by icbc and bc hydro
She’ll still drive regardless of having a license or not I’m guessing.
Yep, what a way to start out your life.
I am sure all us bloggers are just lucky that we never caused an accident due to our stupid antics.
This is poor judgement under the influence of alcohol.
I am sure she has learned her lesson, and will be denied a driver’s liscence for a long time, meaning this will impact her ability to earn a good income for many years.
This is what your parents was talking about, being accountable for you actions.
At least she didn’t hitchhike into town
Nice to hear from so many individuals who have lived their lives mistake free. Bravo! You’re all awesome.
Not a credit to her gender.
Everyone makes mistakes but this was no mistake at all it is just plain stupid.
“severing the pole at its base”
I think BC Hydro needs to check the remaining poles that were installed at the same time as the severed poles. It must be quite rotten at the point where it enters the ground for a small truck like that, which obviously absorbed some of the impact through deformation of the metal body, to actually sever such a pole.
I doubt a more recently installed pole would have been severed that easily.
We need to hear more about near misses.
In this case, if she had not had a utility pole in the way, she may just have jumped the curb and kept on going on the field for a while if she had given a bit of gas to prevent her from rolling.
What message are we sending to our kids when a premier of our province gets a free deck added to his house?
How about when the premier of a province uses private jets for personal business/pleasure?
What does that have to do with a 22 year old from Hazelton that crashes a vehicle she is driving, possibly under the influence of alcohol? It is more important to consider what message that sends to her and her family, friends and community.
Do you really think that she had in the back of her mind that Campbell was driving while drunk and that she could do the same. Half the people in the province probably do not even know who Campbell was or that he was caught by police in Hawaii.
Holy cr*p that last comment of yours was a complete mess gus, try again and maybe I can find something to debate you on?
People#1, gus’ post is accurate. It is your post that is a complete mess. Talk about holding a grudge. Let it go man. Your life will be better if you don’t hold onto the negative parts for too long.

Nice to hear from so many individuals who have lived their lives mistake free. Bravo!
Hardcandy … you got to be kidding right? If this story is correct, she was drunk driving WHILE on a learning permit! You’ve never been the victim of a drunk driver I take it?
Darn good thing that John A. McDonald didn’t drive cars.
Macdonald…..damn.
Hmm. Thinking way back to when I just got my license, cause it only took 30 days back then, I might possibly have sipped the odd beer and drove at the same time with my car packed with friends, and somehow managed not to hit anything – but that was pure luck – nothing more. So all this girl has shown, is even with all the education out there, young people still do stupid things – and old people forget how stupid they were when they were young.
Drunk driving is not a “mistake”. It is a conscious decision to drink and then climb behind the wheel of a car. So yes, most of us have lived our lives free of making “mistakes” like this.
OK, let’s take gus’s comment apart for discussion / possible debate:
1. He mentions premier’s adding a deck to a house and traveling using expensive private jets, none of which are remotely connected to drinking and driving, which is the subject of this news article. Can’t debate anything there.
2. gus asking what was in the back of her mind is a non-starter because none of us (no one) will ever know what was going through that 22 year old woman’s mind while drinking and driving. Can’t debate anything there.
3. gus states half the province probably do not know who Campbell was or that he was caught DUI in Hawaii. Hmm… I know news250 has good circulation, but why would half the people in this province, or all the people in this province, read my comment on some news story? Can’t debate anything there.
So gus’s comment has me stymied, all that I know is the subject of this news article, and many of the comments on here are about “drinking and driving” I simply mentioned a certain Liberal premier who was caught “drinking and driving”. Hmmm… I seem to be on subject because my comment was drinking and driving related.
Hmmm… bornandbred you assume I raised the comment because I have a grudge? Sorry to say, you are wrong, my comment was simply a statement of fact. I saw “drinking and driving” comments of others and Gordon Campbell immediately came to mind as another example of drinking and driving… I could go on, but… ;-)
Says alcohol was a factor, not that the girl was drinking or drunk. Did it ever occur to anyone that MAYBE she wasn’t drinking, but one or more of the others were? She may have been trying to do the right thing. Just a thought.
I agree with moose; “Drunk driving is not a “mistake”. It is a conscious decision to drink and then climb behind the wheel of a car.”
So what kind of IDIOT, A-HOLE, IRRESPONSIBLE TWITT would do such a thing as drink and then drive????… oh yeah… right…
Guess I can now officially retract my comment about Gordon Campbell’s drinking and driving conviction, my self and others just made the connection :-D
Debate? Hmmm, debate?
Ok, how about a few questions to start the debate:
Why would a former Premier’s drinking and driving conviction have any bearing upon this incident?
Do we have any evidence whatsoever that Gordon Campbell’s conviction has sent a message to our young people, let alone the driver in this incident?
What might that message be? Go ahead and drink and drive, or would it be don’t drink and drive or you will end up with a conviction like the former Premier?
Do our young people even know who Gordon Campbell is?
Did Gordon Campbell meet with these young people and force them to have a drink?
Did Gordon Campbell have any involvement in this accident?
Why might cause some people to bring Gordon Campbell into this issue in the first place?
How do some people become so self-righteous as to assume that they never did anything stupid or irresponsible?
Is that enough to start a debate?
People#1, if Campbell’s conviction was somewhat recent (say, within 1 or 2 years), your post might be relevent. I think that might be what gus was getting at.
“He mentions premier’s adding a deck to a house and traveling using expensive private jets, none of which are remotely connected to drinking and driving, which is the subject of this news article. Can’t debate anything there.”
That is your opinion.
The debating point that I see is whether a premier of a province sets a moral example for the people in the province.
My answer is yes.
I am taking the debate to a higher level than the specific action.
Your purpose is to drag one side of the political spectrum into it. We all know that.
My purpose is to point out that the political stripe is unimportant. They are all the same.
So, yes, we can debate lots of things.
You just do not like debating, because you have a hard time winning. So you stack the deck.
Drunk driving “is a conscious decision to drink and then climb behind the wheel of a car.”
LOL ….
Almost everywhere I go I ask people whether they intend to get drunk for one reason and one reason alone, the want to leave as soon as they are drunk enough to drive around town drunk. They tell me it is the best experience they ever have in their lives.
That would mean that a person makes a decision which is not made under the influence of alcohol one minute, and then in the next minutes that person is sitting behind the wheel of a car and turns the keys, still not under the influence of alcohol ……. then they start driving ….. and suddenly they are driving under the influence of alcohol.
;-)
Whether a decision made by an individual under the influence of alcohol is a conscious decision is an aspect of a valid debate.
It is a debate that is associated with other situations than just getting behind the wheels of a car when under the influence.
Here is an opinion of whether a patient who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs (even prescription drugs) is capable of making a decision one could consider to be within the meaning of a conscious decision.
From the link below:
“The patient remaining under the influence of alcohol â a substance which to some or great extent impairs cognitive functions, rational thinking, and the ability to evaluate incoming information, makes the patient unable to interpret the information given by the doctor. Thus, the patientâs consent or refusal to be provided with medical care is lacking in the needed elements of âinformingâ and âconscious declaration of willâ which are considered by doctors and lawyers to be absolutely necessary to make such will valid.”
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23311793
If one were to agree that a drunk person typically does not have the ability to determine whether they should drive or not, then the onus really falls on those people around the person under the influence – bar tenders, party hosts, restaurant servers, club owners, friends who present and are not under the influence.
I do not think that we pay enough attention to that. We typically go after the easy prey, no matter what it is.
Darn it, Gus!! I think you’ve scared Peeps away. After all, wasn’t it you who a short time ago kicked Peeps butt all over the place in a recent debate?
Gus, do you ever feel like you are trying to have a debate with someone who intellectually brings a knife to an gunfight!
ice, Yell us, oops, I mean tell us how you really feel!
Oh wow. ice / Crysbaron / CF-18 / taxpayerteacher / alias….is out of meds.
Drinking and driving isn’t “making a mistake”. It’s a deliberate act that puts the driver and innocent people in danger. It is stupid and she deserves every bit of punishment she gets and probably more.
I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my life. I’ve done lots of stupid things. But one stupid thing I have never done was to drive under the influence.
Nothing near like you say gus. I just happen to like staying on topic and on point. My comments, and the rest of the people commenting on this story were on drinking and driving, I used an example of someone else we all know who was caught and convicted of drinking and driving. Seemed relevant to bring it up, someone mentioned Basi and Virk heading up the WorkSafeBc investigation the other day (jk), what no timeline on that?
Wait until the next election when all the righty tighties on this discussion board will be bringing up things the NDP did 16 years ago? Given that will happen, your, and gus’s, comments seem to take on a strange double standard bornandbred.
Besides, I was trying to make a point, I made it and am super duper happy now :-D
Peeps, speaking of more recent issues, there seems to be a bit of an issue arising with the Portland Hotel Society in Vancouver, including the resignation of many managers.
It would appear that there has been some controversial spending within this non-profit society which provides social housing and support for people with mental illnesses and addictions, including both alcohol and drug addictions!
“The B.C. government has released details of a damning audit that shows a non-profit group that looks after some of Canada’s poorest citizens spent thousands of dollars on lavish hotels, limousine rides, expensive dinners and even a trip to a Disney resort.”
It has now been reported that Jenny Kwan “
A New Democrat who represents a Vancouver riding has admitted she and her family took two trips cited in scathing government audits that revealed lavish spending by a non-profit group funded to look after some of Canada’s poorest people.”
Wow, an NDP MLA, a champion of the poor and downtrodden has enjoyed Disneyland vacations with her family at the expense of the poor!
Peeps, as our local champion of the “People” do you have any comments on Jenny Kwan vacationing on funds that were intended to help the poorest of the poor and those with alcohol and drug addictions?
My question seems relevant, at least it does to me, as this issue is front and center in today’s news broadcasts and also because these funds would have been better spent helping someone deal with an alcohol or drug addiction and could have ultimately helped prevent someone from drinking and driving!
Perhaps Jenny Kwan, the NDP MLA for a Vancouver riding should resign?
“I was trying to make a point, I made it”
I am not sure you made the same point to everyone, or that the point you made is anything like the point that you wanted to make …..
But, if you are happy … that makes me happy…. :-)
northern spirit
Really,,,,Police say alcohol was a factor,,,this usually and always means the driver of the vehicle, not the passengers.
shake shake
Jenny Kwan Disney trips, Portland Hotel Society… what does all this have to do with a 22 year old drunk driver getting into an accident? You’re starting to go south like gus HG.
The girl should be banned from driving for life. She only had a learners, zero tolerance you are done sweetie!
Well Peeps, I never heard a peep out of you regarding my earlier post where I attempted to engage in a “debate” with you.
This post was started about a young lady who was involved in an MVA, with the Police indicating that alcohol was a factor in the accident.
It seems logical to suggest that more attention should be paid to the reasons why alcohol was a factor. This begs the question as to whether or not the driver has an alcohol problem/addiction. You just want to blame Gordon Campbell!
As you have indicated time and again, you are the person of the “People”, standing up for the rights of the poor and downtrodden. It seems reasonable to suggest that you should be outraged that Jenny Kwan and others involved in the Portland Hotel Society appear to be taking money from the poorest of the poor and are using it for their own purposes, pleasure and leisure.
Following me so far?
Perhaps this poor young lady and others like her suffer from alcohol addiction problems and not ex-Premier problems? It’s reasonable for me to expect that you of all “People” would be outraged that money that was for the poorest of the poor was instead used for far less important things, unless you consider a Disneyland vacation for an NDP MLA to be more important!
In the past, I’ve called you out as a hypocrite! Your laying of blame upon an ex-Premier and your lack of outrage over the misuse of funds allocated for the poorest of the poor supports my opinion.
Sometimes the “Facts and Truths” really suck, eh??
Your turn! Let’s debate!!
Hey, peeps. Don’t bring up the name Harper. It won’t wash.
Question: was this 22 year old girl as drunk as Gordon Campbell, when he was caught drinking and driving, or was this girl less drunk?
Question: If I said I felt like Gordon Campbell, should I get behind the wheel and drive?
Question: If I drank two bottles of wine in 30 minutes, would I be just tipsy or would I be like Gordon Campbell drunk?
John A. Mcmacdonald . First drunken slob eastern prime minister to screw bc . We’re still waiting for the fixed link to Vancouver island that was promised as a prerequisite to signing the federation charter . 150 k people live on PEI . Ironic for bc that they called their bridge the confederation bridge or just another slap in the face for the people bc . The strange thing is that none of our so called leaders ever bring it up . Federally whooped pussies we got leading us . He said it was too expensive at 21 million dollars . How much is that in today’s dollars . That’s what those pukes owe us . Give us our money Steve and we’ll build it ourselves . It’s our money . A deal is a deal but how can you deal with a drunken Tory . And some are worried about a deck and a drunk gordo . Amazing .
Come on Peeps! 3 wonderful and totally irrelevant questions?? That’s the best that you’ve got?
I’ll repeat the questions that I posted for you a long time ago, questions that so far you have shirked away from. Perhaps the second time around, you might want to debate them??
Come on Peeps, you brought Campbell into the debate! So, let’s debate!
Let’s debate my questions, but I only want you to give me the “facts and the truths”!!
By the way, I wish that we were sitting across the table from each other so that I could reach over and shut off your computer as I laughed in your face!! I suspect that without something to copy and paste, you wouldn’t have much to say!
Correct me if I am wrong!!
HG asks; “Why might cause some people to bring Gordon Campbell into this issue in the first place?”
Umm… because she was drinking and driving just like Gordon Campbell was?
Wow Peeps! Your debating skills are amazing!!
So, I’ll ask again…
Wwhy would his actions have any bearing upon this young lady’s actions?
Do we have any evidence or have you found any evidence on the internet to suggest that the driver of this truck has any idea or interest in who Gordon Campbell is or what he was?
Your turn!
The libs knew all about the PHS spending habits before the last election Hart Guy. They chose to keep it quiet until well after the election. Maybe they should all be fired along with Jenny Kwan.
A fixed link to Vancouver Island…..in the 1870’s. Really. Some good chit on this site…..
Here’s more for you Peeps!
Are you comfortable with Jenny Kwan and her family using public funds for their personal vacations in Disneyland?
Are you comfortable with that FACT considering that funds should have been spent on the poorest of poor, possibly treating someone with an alcohol addition and potentially saving a life by stopping someone from drinking and driving and having a fatal crash!
Dragonmaster, did they chose to keep it quiet until well after the election?
The audit covered a 3 year period of time, from March 2010 to March 2013. So, if the audit period did not end until after March 2013, it is highly unlikely that the report would be compiled, processed, completed and released by the May 13, 2013 election date.
Nice try though!
Yes . It’s all true MF . Down Bute inlet across Quadra to Campbell river . 21 million dollars was the price . Sadly all the people of bc have and are paying the price of ferries for people and goods for a hundred and thirty years plus . If any body thinks it’s not my problem . Think again it’s coming off your pay check in the form of subsides for everyone on the wrong end of the ferry . It’s in the billions and it’s a dumb way of doing things .
To those of you who read this comment section; perhaps this will explain some of Hart Guy’s comments directed at me:
