Alarming Increase In Impaired Driving In BC Northwest

Sunday, March 30, 2014 @ 4:51 AM

Terrace, BC – The RCMP's West Pacific Traffic Services, based in Terrace, is noting an alarming increase in the number of impaired drivers in the region this year, compared to the start of 2013.

Constable Philip Crack says the number of 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions doubled in the first two months of 2014 – from eight IRPs last year, to 19 this year.  Officers have also issued 12 three-day IRPs and two seven-day IRPs.  In the first two months of 2013, there were just two three-day IRPs issued.

Making a bad situation even worse, Constable Crack notes five of the 19 IRPs were issued between 8am and 6pm, while another five were between 6pm and midnight.  "So just about half of them were what we would consider daytime impaired driving," says Crack, "When we have the highest volume of traffic on roads."

The Traffic Services Officer says, "With all the education and media about the consequences of impaired driving, I would have hoped that the number would be going down, not up."

While compiling the news release, Constable Crack says, "Our officers brought in another impaired driver that is facing charges uner the Criminal Code for impaired driving over .08, which puts us to 20 for the year, so far."

well here in PG I could see that because the cops never do checks except at Christmas, they don’t pull over speeders they themselves speed up and down the hart all the time. have not seen a speed trap since last summer. and they wonder why people break the law? well if no one is enforcing it?

Is there a relationship to the increased construction and influx of construction workers?

Very good observation seamutt and yes, I would hazard a guess that is indeed a contributor.

More economic activity, more young to middle aged men in the area, more disposable income, more time spent enjoying themselves in the local area, etc.

Ha, ha, seamut nailed it! LOL

Yes, it’s the drunken, booming wild west out in the Terrace / Kitimat / Prince Rupert area.

Hmm.. they seem to be doing fairly well for a bunch of left leaners who consistently elect NDP MP Nathan Cullen, what’s up with that?

Maybe they’re too drunk on election day to know better.

Duh, stay home if you wanna drink.

Do you really think Nathan Cullen has anything to do with progress in the Northwest?

As much as the Liberal Party has anything to do with the stagnant economy in the Central Interior of BC, I am guessing yes?

The funny thing is, that most of the activity in the northwest was there or planned long before the last election. So any politicians really has no bearing on economy or employment. Companies employ people, and they will continue to do so, regardless of the political climate.

So then the whole Liberal Party / Government mantra about “jobs and the economy” has no relevance to reality? I kind of thought so Huh.

That’s right, if you have read any of my posts, you know I am not a fan of any political party and certainly don’t believe most of what they say, no matter the stripe.

Way back in the day I spent three months there working, I saw the sun twice, depressing gray drizzle drove me to drink ,didnt drive though even then when laws where a lot less severe , pour your beer out carry on ,cheers

It’s Harper’s fault!

Huh says…”Companies employ people, and they will continue to do so, regardless of the political climate”.

That’s not what all the Lib’s and cons will have us believe.

They say if an NDP govt is elected it’s all over, all business will pack up and move.

I guess they will take their resources and powerlines with them.

and there temporary foreign workers
