Price Hikes Kick in Today
Tuesday, April 1, 2014 @ 4:00 AM
Prince George, B.C.- It is no April Fool’s Day joke, as of today you will be paying more to keep the lights on, and to mail in your electricity bill.
The price of a single stamp actually increased as of yesterday to $1.00. The old rate was 63 cents. Stamps are still cheaper if you buy them in a pack, reducing the price per stamp to 85 cents.
BC Hydro rates are up 9% effective today. The increase is expected to add about $8 dollars to the monthly bill for the average home.
B.C. Ferries boosts its fares by 4% today, and seniors ( 65 and over) no longer get to ride for free Monday to Thursday if they "walk on" They will have to pay half the value of the regular adult fare.

All these price hikes suck, and are a total money grab by the liberal government Time to vote soon, so you make a decision if you want to be broke all the time.
I think I hear the suction sound of the BC Hydro “dividends” being funneled to general revenue coffers.
we are slaves!!
Boudicca: you just figured that out? Yes we are slaves, totally indebted to our governments for at last six months of the year and then longer if you consider what the CRA make you pay extra at income tax time. Slaves to this lifestyle and society.
And the government offers it’s workers and teachers consecutive zeros to their wage increases. Perhaps cut back the big bonuses to the ferry executives to save a few million.
Price hikes are a fact of life, no matter the government. All the whining and complaining in the world won’t change it.
If you don’t want to be continuously dumped on maybe voters should wake up and try voting for a different party other than Liberal.
“….a different party other than Liberal.”
We had ten years of that – a complete disaster.
Mike Harcourt cut his allegiance off today.
Prince George I did not say you had to vote NDP and I don’t care what has happened 10-20-30-40 years ago.I am talking about the government of today. When I see a government that has made as many mistakes as the Liberals have made since they have been in power it is time for change and yes the sky will not fall in if you vote for another party.
Well our city can always do what Abbotsford Police are doing. lol

So their is a lot of bashing on the Liberals. I can see why, loosing for so many years has to be painful if your a dedicated NDP’r.
So, if the NDP was in power, they would be doing the same thing with BC Hydro. The fact of the matter is, BC Hydro need to upgrade and maintain facilities at a alarming rate, because we lived too long on the laurels of cheap power supply. The fact of the matter is, we need to import power into this province just to power up what we have. BC hydro has spent a lot of effort in the 90’s and last decade with Power Smart, to hold off development. The cost is, we need more power and its not cheap.
We are paying far too less for our power. To get ourselves with world prices or even 40% of what it cost in California, we should be paying 12-15 cents a kilowatt. That is where we are heading, maybe then we will start turning off the lights in rooms we are not in.
Is it really the Liberals money, no, it still goes back into the economy. So if the Liberals are in power they put more money in the infrastructure so we can get our goods to market. If the NDP’rs are in power, they focus on the social programs at the cost of maintaining long term revenue source.
BC has always gone back and forth in the spectrum. When the NDP manage to get their poop in a group, maybe they will have a shot at it. Can’t blame Harcourt and letting his membership lapse. They need a charismatic leader to convince us outside of the lower mainland. You see, we the working class that are out in the elements knows that it needs a government on the right side of center, if we want to keep working.
It doesn’t take much for the working man to realize that NDP focus’s on major urban center needs, forgetting that its us past Hope that is making it all possible. We need to get our goods to market with the least amount of obstacles.
A lot of the young workers in the field, are working their butts off to bring home a paycheck, and see their neighbor complaining about how hard up they are because the welfare system doesn’t pay enough.
I honestly believe that the young men and women are better in tune to what is going on, than we were when we were in our twenties and thirties. They are making their own decision on who to vote for, and for what reasons. They are not following the union mantra of voting socialist position. This is a new and important revolution that needs to be understood.
sheesh. talk about soapboxes. I thought this story was about price hikes, not the “what we should and should not do” forum.
He spoke, how much extra are we paying for power on the run of river projects than we could be paying if we just bought the power on the open market?
He spoke California depends heavily on thermal power which is much more expensive than hydro electric that is why they pay more plus their increasing usage of very expensive inefficient wind and solar.
BC Hydro has been sucked dry by all governments. Now the chickens have come home to roost in infrastructure upgrades. The big cost though is paying for very expensive IPP power that has been developed by friends of the liberals.
I cannot seem to find a cost breakdown of our power rates. Why is that hidden? Why the misdirection?
Can someone find a cost breakdown?
Fate; independant power producers are part of the move to green infrastructure, don’t you want to support the go green movement?
In my opinion this article is kindof funny. Here’s why:
1. Stamps go up. Ok, I’m sure some people will be hit by this price increase, but I bet there are a ton like me that have to think pretty hard to think the last time they mailed something. Most bills are paid online and letters are via e-mail or other electronic means these days.
2. Hydro – $8 X 12 = $96.00 per year. OMG, this really is shocking. I look at my utility bills and Hydro is by far the cheapest one. So it finally went up, it’s been very low for years. I bet most people spend $96.00 at Tims in one month!!
3. BC Ferries increase. Ok, 250 news the only people that are using BC Ferries in Northern BC would be Prince Rupert. How much is this really effecting us? Again, I really have to think the last time I hopped a ferry to Vancouver Island.
Still love living in PG. Even with these scary price increases!!
Investers in an IPP will not construct or buy a power plant unless they are sure they will be repaid with a profit margin so we are now paying more than we should be because BC Hydro is buying power from theIPP’s at an inflated price.
The Liberals took millions out of BC Hydro and sold power contracts to various PPIs that resulted in BC power consumers paying huge amounts more for power than necessary had Hydro not done this. There needs to be a forensic audit done to BC Hydro to evaluate the depth of mismanagement and who reaped the benefits. Also the monies from the sale of BC Rail that supposedly went to the Northern Development Trust or whatever the exact name is should also have a forensic audit done to see how this was managed.
