Dust Advisory Continues

Tuesday, April 1, 2014 @ 5:23 PM

Prince George, B.C.  The dust advisory remains in effect for Prince George, and that means Free Transit rides are  just hours away.

At 4 this afternoon, the 24 hour rolling average for PM 10 was 58 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 43 µg/m3 at College Heights and 55 µg/m3 at BCR. The Provincial target is 50 micrograms per cubic metre.

As for fine particulates or PM2.5,  the  rolling average was 15 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site and  12 µg/m3 at College Heights at 4 this afternoon.  All PM2.5 rolling averages were well below the provincial target of 25 micrograms per  cubic metre.

Ministry of Environment meteorologist Dennis Fudge says the high levels of PM10 continue to be from road dust,  compounded by a lack of wind.  The dust levels are expected to climb again this evening.

There is precipitation in the forecast, and depending on how much rain, (or snow) falls on Prince George, will tell the tale on whether or not this advisory continues tomorrow.

There will be an update tomorrow morning at 9:30.

In the meantime, when the clock strikes 12 tonight, the City’s Free Fare for Clean Air programs kicks in, and will be in effect until midnight of the day the  advisory is cancelled.

All they need to do is get busy with the street cleaning….there are lots of streets with no ice or snow on them…do not know why they have not been done yet! Now, we have people with breathing problems…unreal

They could have started a long time ago.

We need rain.

We need them to clean the streets,…what are they waiting for I wonder!

for spring

They can’t sweep when there is a dust advisory on. Go figure !

Give more; they could have started earlier but sweeping is done at night and if the temperature is way below freezing you are just going to wear out a broom and pick nothing up as it is frozen to the street

Sunny day, they are not actually sweeping the ‘street’ but rather the curb areas which have water mixed with the dirt and dust, and guess what – it freezes at night and can’t be picked up even if during the day it could.

If people would keep from wandering into the gravel as they drive they wouldn’t kick up that dust, and if they didn’t fly through parking lots they wouldn’t kick up the dust as much if at all. Drivers need a bit of education as they are the number one cause if advisories, check out the dust level at 6 am and then at noon.

Free bus rides? Many a true word spoken in jest.
