Prince George, B.C. – Business owners and community leaders attended a special session at the Treasure Cove Casino last evening, all with a view to becoming a Friend of the Games, the 2015 Canada Winter Games to be precise.
People in Prince George have heard the phrase over and over, “It will be the largest event ever hosted in Northern B.C.” indeed it will, as thousands of athletes, coaches, visitors, VIPs and media will be in Prince George for the 18 day event in 2015. In fact, the magnitude of the Games has been expressed so often, the average business owner may think being part of the Games is out of reach.
Not so.
The Winter Games Society has developed a program called “Friend of the Games”. For as little as $500 dollars, a business can be on that “Friendship list”. In return, the business will get some perks, including non commercial use of the Friends of the Games logo, a discount on Games Gear on a couple of special shopping dates and their name listed in a “Thank You” ad after the Games wrap up.
The perks increase according to the dollar commitment and the commitment could be as high as $50 thousand dollars which would give the donor a Sport Sponsor designation.
There are already more than 40 businesses in Prince George which have signed on to the Friends of the Games program “The major sponsors are looking for National coverage, but local businesses wouldn’t be. So this gives everyone an opportunity to be part of the Games“ says Games CEO Stu Ballantyne.

The downside to all this is that a lot of the local sports teams could be losing sponsorship. For 500 bucks you can sponsor a softball team or a hockey team or a ? team and earn the gratitude of a multitude of kids who will be here for more then two weeks.
Very good point axman
If you think that a sponsor pays $500.00 for a team in hockey or baseball then you never have sponsored a team. Cost a lot more. That is why we should appreciate and support all sponsors in any capacity

Nonsense. A PG minor hockey league house team sponsorship package is $450. A PG minor girls softball team sponsorship package is $500. I could look up more for you but you get the picture.
Axman is that package the sole amount for a team or can a team have multiple packages/sponsers? I think Donny was referring to a team with only one sponser.

It’s one sponsor for one team. The sponsor gets their name on the back of a team jersey so they really wouldn’t want another sponsor for the same team.
When you sponsor a team you’re basically helping to keep the costs per player down.

I’m not sure what Donny was referring to.
The stories that will have to be done after the games is how many seniors or kids or sports programs died because of the games taking their money away. Some have already died. Better understand what youre signing up to volunteer for folks and who is pocketing the money before taxes come in to save it.
I’m old enough to remember church run bingo games. And when TV used to be free. Alas.
