Dust Advisory Re-Issued for P.G.

Thursday, April 3, 2014 @ 9:26 AM

Prince George, B.c.- The Dust Advisory for Prince George, which was cancelled at noon yesterday, has been re-issued.

The 24 hour rolling averages for  PM10, ( coarse particulates) are, once again, well above the provincial  objectives.

The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles, PM10, is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 59 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 30 µg/m3 at College Heights and 61 µg/m3 at BCR at 8 this morning.

The  levels  for fine particles, PM2.5, are  well under the Provincial objectives of 25 micrograms per cubic metre.  The 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 18 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site, 11 µg/m3 at College Heights at 8 am today.

As was the case yesterday,  the  high levels are mainly due to road dust in the bowl area of the City.

Levels are expected to improve by this afternoon as winds are expected to increase somewhat, but particulate levels are expected to increase again this evening and early tonight. There is a slight chance of light precipitation throughout the forecast but that may not help improve conditions much.

This Dust Advisory is expected to be in effect  until at least tomorrow morning,  but an update will be provided  later this afternoon.

The Advisory means the  City will, once again,  start it's Free Fare for Clean Air  program,  allowing free transit rides from midnight tonight,  until 11:59 pm on the day the advisory is cancelled.

These guys sweeping out parking lots downtown with no wet down sure add to the dust problem.

What…I thought they were ALWAYS supposed to wet down first…they need to be told by someone, please!

COME ON CITY OF PRINCE GEORGE, LETS GET CLEANING THE STEETS, AY!!!!!!

Sure am glad the local “dust advisory committee” isn’t leading me in a war. Mega-DUH!

When the dust adivisory is on they should ban dually pickups from driving around stirring up the dust!

Just like guns, it isn’t the dually thats the problem!

As usual a bit of misunderstanding to how dirt gets picked up

Here is a ‘dust for dummy’s’ breakdown. When you sweep up wet it leaves some sludge behind on the road spread out over the entire length of the broom. The original dirt trail may have been a couple feet along the edge of the road but when you sweep your broom gets wet and leaves behind an even layer of wet fine dirt the entire width of the broom. When this dries it is a strip of dirt 5 to 6 feet wide and now in the drive lane which makes things worse as the vehicles push it to the edge again once it dries lifting the fine dust into the air.

Vacuum filtration picks it up dry and the vac keeps the dust down, if the operator floats the broom it will pick up the fine dirt as well, if they do not float the broom the gravel will be picked up and the fine dirt will be left behind. Once people rip through the parking lot this fine dirt is lifted into the air. Most companies do not float the broom as it wears out a lot quicker, which costs bucks.

My machine does a heavy pickup and on the next run does a float, side brushing and dumping does create dust, no machine can avoid that – even with wet down the water spray does not reach the bottom of the gravel and the fines are stirred up by the edge brush.

Follow a street sweeper and take a peek next time you see one in operation. First thing in the morning after a street sweep the dust is incredible with people heading to work as they stir up the fresh layer of dirt which is now dry.

Aw slinky, your taking the fun out of this. You should be telling sunnyday 1 that there is an app on her phone that can turn PG into Kelowna.

oops…you’re…..

Guns and dually’s? Nah, too easy, LOL :)

Day 3 on a wee section of south Ospika near Tyner Blvd for our city sweepers. Gravel and dust/mud still spread everywhere.
