Bears Are Waking
Prince George, B.C. – In what is believed to be the first of the season, a black bear has been sighted at Wilson Park this morning.
Northern Bear Awareness is advising all Prince George residents to be vigilant when it comes to dealing with possible attractants.
“This is the time of year to be proactive” says Northern Bear Awareness President Dave Bakker “It’s time to put away the bird feeders, and make sure garbage is kept in a closed shed.”
Bakker says this morning’s sighting in Wilson Park is the first visually confirmed sighting of a bear, but he suspects the bears have already been moving through the Lower College Heights area.
He says last year, there were 769 bear complaints filed with the Conservation Office, and 302 of those complaints involved bears getting into garbage. Last year, about 24 bears were destroyed in Prince George.
Bakker says it is critical that residents take action now to ensure bears won’t be attracted to residential garbage “Once a food source is discovered, it is never forgotten.”

Every year we are told to store our garbage in a secure location and yet every year we have bears destroyed because residents don’t or won’t store their garbage in a secure location!
I went for a walk late yesterday afternoon. Even though today is “garbage day”, some residents already had their garbage bins out at the street and it seemed like every second or third house had it’s garbage bin outside, beside the garage instead of inside the garage.
In a neighbourhood that has bears every year and a neighbourhood where everybody has a garage, this is pretty pathetic!
Our Bylaw Enforcement Officers need to start writing tickets! Unfortunately that’s not very likely to happen but if it did, word would get out and people might actually start storing their garbage properly!
Pretty sad that even a single bear gets destroyed because of stupid people!
People don’t care about fines hart guy. That is why they continue to speed and use electronic devices when driving. What happens if you don’t pay your garbage bylaw fine? Does someone actually drive around at 4:00am to see if everyone is complying? Just wait until curb side recycling starts with all those smelly cans at the side of the road!
Anybody ever see the bylaw enforcement officers ever do anything. I have tried to phone in infractions a couple of times all I got was bad attitude and the third degree. Heck they made me think I was the perp for calling in. Maybe we should give them a bad ass uniform and a gun like the CO’s
Bylaw infractions that might lead to a confrontation of some sort are selectively enforced. This is no exception.
The bear activity is far more widespread than what is mentioned in the story above. Spent some time in the lower College Heights area today, to mention a few LaTrobe,Lancaster,Cowart and Loedel all had evidence of very recent garbage being spread about the neighbourhoods. As for the area mentioned above it has reached into the Moores Meadow area which for a bear is not that far away. For the comments about bylaws and enforcment maybe tune into the local television station tonight and watch the local news.
Question, in PG how many injuries by moose, how many by bears?
Seamut, not sure if there is more to your question or not or if there may be a point to make but here are two incidents.
A mountie was injured back in 2012 when a moose stomped up and over his cruiser shattering the side window and bruising the mounties shoulder, he finished his shift.
1985 (believe this date is correct) A vehicle travelling highway 97 near Prince George, struck a bear causing the driver to loose control. The driver perished when the vehicle left the road and collided with a tree.
These are the only two that information could be found on, there could possibly be more.
