Operation ‘Clean Sweep’ Is Underway

Eight-year-old Ava Koehler and her grandma, Joan Forster, pitch in near the City's soccer fields

Prince George, BC – The yellow 'pitch in' bags are billowing in the breeze, as volunteers spread out across the city to take part in REAP's annual spring clean up…

Eight-year-old Ava Koehler is one of the approximately 2,000 volunteers expected to take part in Operation Clean Sweep.  This is not the first year for the youngster, as she went out with her grandma last year, as well.

The pair was picking up litter alongside 18th Avenue as part of a group of volunteers with the Yellowhead Rotary Club.

Club member, Jay Lazzarin, says the group has been taking part in the annual event for about the past 10 years.

He notes  the boulevard between the parking lot at CN Centre and Ospika was relatively litter free this morning, making for quick work by volunteers in that area.

There are also eight bin depots set up today for city residents looking to recycle their yard waste.  The locations are: the Hart Highway Plaza, Ospika and Andreas, the Hudson's Bay Slough, Blackburn Elementary, College Heights Secondary, 3rd Avenue and Watrous, 5th and Killoren, Park and Bunce – with drop off until 4pm.

I I was unable to find a refuse box at College Heights Secondary.

I hope parents and teachers are teaching their kids to wait and throw chip bags and candy wrappers into garbage cans too.
A good habit is so easily taught and learned.

My favourite littering news clip.

In the fifties naughty school children were punished by being made to pick up garbage around the school grounds. Now they pay a “custodian” to do that and it still doesn’t get done. These elementary school kids should have created union. Never crossed my mind. Drat!
