Medical Marihuana Bylaw on Council Agenda
Prince George, B.C. – Council for the City of Prince George will taking its first look tonight at what it plans to do about medical marihuana grow operations within its boundaries.
The amendments to a zoning bylaw call for such growing operations to be limited to lots which are in the Agricultural Land Reserve, and which are at least 15 hectares in size. The changes also call for a minimum setback of 30 meters from all property lines, and shall not be permitted within 150 meters of any lot zoned
- R (rural residential)
- RS, RT, RM,(residential)
- C (commercial)
- P (Parks and Institutions) or
- Z (site specific)
The Regional District of Fraser Fort George has already adopted regulations that will regulate such production within its boundaries. The Regional District bylaw calls for such facilities to be on properties no smaller than 640 acres (259 hectares) with a 60 meter (200 feet) setback from a side and rear property lines and a further 30 meter (100 feet) set back from the front.
The Regional District would zone such properties M5 and under that description, there are only a handful of properties in the Regional District that would qualify, and none are adjacent to residential subdivisions, although they are close to rural residences.

What 640 acres? Why not 420 acres?
What a bunch of balogna… legalize the crap, throw some seeds in the ground, harvest em. This is totally much ado about nothing. Bunch of nutheads sitting around pontificating about a “narcotic” that isn’t even a narcotic. Its a herb.
If it is a herb them smoke hemp excuseme! I agree legalize it but like tobacco you will never be able to legally grow your own.
axman…nice!
There just making it hard to grow it. They don’t want every Tom, Dick and Harry growing it. They can’t say it can not be grown, so they control it by setting limitations.
More BS I think the city of PG has better things to do with their time , whats next , who do they think they are try and control everything , fix the damn streets clean up this dirty filty city .
NoWay… You can legally grow some tobacco for your own use, just like you can make wine or beer, so I do not get your point. He Spoke, you have probably touched more on the situation. If you read up on it, big pharma has been studying cannabis for years, trying to patent it, or extracts of it, so they can cash in. I could post much proof of this, but believe me. People have been using their own homegrown to control epilepsy, (even in children) pain and many other afflictions, without drug companies making any money, and they want a piece of that pie.
This is a manner of personal freedoms and rights being restricted by A) lobbying, B) misinformation C) ideology.
I agree… legalize it.. look at the sentences they are giving out for grow ops being busted.. slaps on the wrist so you know the government is setting it up to be legal.
The biggest problem I see is the stigma attached to it.. for some reason its okay to use the drug called alcohol which is known to cause mood swings, violence, abuse, etc etc but not okay to smoke some pot.. which causes none of the above.
You dont black out from smoking to much, you dont get sick, you dont want to fight.
Tax it but make sure its good quality that is legally being sold or the illlegal market will still be alive and well.
Fedup, I agree with you.
By the way, Opinion, the correct spelling is marijuana. That marihuana thing came from Health Canada who is so confused in this issue they do not even know how to spell the stuff.
It is a beautiful city. If you think its filthy, dirty city. I’m OK if you leave.
I guess with vapourizers, you don’t even have to smoke it or injest it.
They are forgetting about the 3 metre high fencing around the property with razor wire on top.
Seems to me that the community garden on Victoria and 7th is not on ALR, neither is the site big enough, and it sure is UGLY!!!
Maple Ridge is proposing the same. That may mean that MR and PG are the first out of the gate.

An interesting comment made by a former MR Councillor is: ââIf you want things to be secure, you donât isolate them. You bring them out into the middle where there are a lot of eyes on the street, and where thereâs a lot of ability to apply security options,â
You don’t black out from smoking too much P Val? You better find some better sh*t!
It might be a herb excuseme but no one would be smoking it if it didn’t have the active ingredient THC which is a drug that messes up your brain! Next up roadside blood tests for the legal limit of THC!
d9-thc is not the only active ingredient.
They have attempted to isolate the active ingredient, but found that it is actually the compound(s) that includes d9-thc that produces the desired affects. Plus, simple ingestion does not always produce the desired affect due to the need to burn the material for the chemical transition to an intoxicant.
The chemistry is very complex.
As for roadsides: the RCMP have implemented specially trained officers that can determine someone is under the influence of a variety of intoxicants, at which point they can order toxicology tests be conducted by warrant.
No Way.. I have partaken in the evil weed many times in my life.. some very high end stuff and HAVE NEVER blacked out if just smoking pot.. but have when mixing with alcohol.. also when people mix it with other drugs as well.
Another stigma attached to pot is its the gateway drug.. false.. Alcohol is the gateway drug….
a lucrative crop that does not require a large footprint to produce and the city would seem to make it very inefficient.
these regulations are cutting the small plot farmer out of the equation, and even many larger plots as well.
If all you needed was gravel to grow dope, in this ‘burg all anyone would need is a broom and a package of seeds.
I don’t really care who smokes it I just don’t want the stink of it as it is venting. I have lived with this for 2 years or better and it’s not fair. Make them be away from residential and ask the neighbours like you do if they are opening a pub or liquor store. Smoke away all just do it away from those who don’t. Oh ya I was there first so not moving
When it comes to the ALR and grow ops, the city has no say in it.
This counsel often exceeds its jurisdiction.
No Way, you should probably learn a bit about cannabis, you do not black out from THC in a pure joint, never. Fact is right now despite prohibition people have pretty much free access to it, if they do not grow their own, through gangs, and criminal outfits who often enough sell a plethora of other much more harmful drugs. The marijuana kids are getting their hands on could be laced with just about anything due to its origin, and the people they are getting it from have an interest in leading them onto much more dangerous stuff. This situation can, and should not continue.
PGLady…your problem with the smell is a consideration problem, some people have it, a lot don’t. My house in the winter fills with diesel fumes as the crap from the chipped up one tons that run for an hour every morning get sucked into the furnace. Not much you can do about jerks.
As far as driving stoned, indeed there are people who will do it as people drive drunk, but that begs the questions will legalization cause more cannabis use than is going on now? No proof that will happen and doesn’t seem to be in Colorado. Kind of makes it a mute point, because it already exists. Secondly, the attitude of a stoner and a drunk, anybody who doesn’t know the difference, shouldn’t be in on this discussion. Not gonna find too many people who have had a joint or two doing 160 in a 50 zone!
I predict in the future that some judge will throw out any charges laid under these proposed zoning laws as unreasonable, punitive and illogical. Instead of welcoming a new medical industry, City Hall seems content to drive it away.
By the way, axman, 640 acres is a traditional agricultural section of land, one mile by one mile in size. Makes no sense when referring to a country now based in metric measurements. However, it does severely restrict the property that could be accessed for this purpose within city limits.
I am just happy that city hall hasn’t figured out that I can make moonshine from the potatoes that I grow in the back yard.
and axman, I did appreciate your 420 reference … :)
I had this posted on the wrong thread earlier this morning before 10am … I agree with anotherside

Here is an interesting one.
The Council for the District of Mission adopted an amendment to the Zoning Bylaw that prohibits the establishment of licensed Medical Marihuana Grow Operations licensed under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations. At the same time, Council adopted a Policy that states that the District of Mission will consider applications for Medical Marihuana Grow Operations on a case by case basis and only when certain criteria can be met.

I can see that heading to a possible legal battle. The City of Prince George lost what may be a similar case back in 1978.

Lot of people live by stink … the stink of the sewage plant, the stink of food cooking near restaurants, the stink of fertilizer in Chilliwack, the stink of sulphur in PG …. and on and on ….
How about the stink of wood burning from wood/pellet fired heaters?
There are other ways of stopping that.
i agree with pglady, i have no concerns with outright legalization, and in fact support it. my only worry is the stink that will be everywhere once this happens, it’s bad enough already. that smell, akin to a dead skunk on the side of the highway, seems to linger on users much more than tobacco smoke. my neighbours smoke weed once in a while and do it outside, where it wafts into my house. i’ve mentioned it to them, and lucky for my family, they’ve been understanding and taken precautions, which I appreciate, but of course, not everyone will be willing to do this.
So what’s it doing to your lungs? Then there is the question about changes to the brain. A n associate who smokes the stuff also bitches about PG air quality.
“that smell, akin to a dead skunk on the side of the highway”
Coming from Ontario, I kinda miss the hot summer days with the smell of “dead skunk in the middle of the road”…
Take a whiff on me, that ain’t no rose
Roll up your window and hold your nose
You don’t have to look and you don’t have to see
‘Cause you can feel it in your olfactory
You got your dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Stinking to high heaven

Don’t you notice all the garbage along the roads in PG?? Just drive down the hill by the jail look down in the ditch and you will see a very nice clean approach to our city…..nice.

I was awaken by the smell of skunk at about 3 or 4 in the morning the other night (had the window open). I was in a really deep sleep and it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what the heck was going on. I quickly ran downstairs and made sure the fresh air exchanger was turned off, LOL.
the stink of fertilizer in Chilliwack, the stink of sulphur in PG …. and on and on ….

Like some other PG people you don’t know what you are talking about.
Cheers
