UNBC Faculty Association Now A Certified Union

Tuesday, April 29, 2014 @ 4:15 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The  Faculty Association at the University of Northern B.C. is now a certified union.

The BC Labour Relations Board  has  announced the results of a recent  certification vote at UNBC.

The question was:

"Do you want the University of Northern British Columbia Faculty Association to become a certified union that will represent you in collective bargaining with your employer?"

The result was a resounding Yes, with  212 of the  237 ballots cast voting  in favour of the  certification.   21 were opposed and  4 ballots were spoiled.

Voter turnout was  66% of the eligible 355 members of the Faculty Association.

Now that the Faculty Association is a certified union,  it will  enter into  collective agreement negotiations with UNBC Administration aimed at replacing the  current framework agreement.

Hmmmm. Could they not get what they wanted through the Faculty Association???

Seems to me they will be pretty restricted once they become a Union.

Not that they will get much either way, because the University is for all intents and purposes us broke. Funding is down, and so is enrolments.

Congrats to the Faculty Association at the University of Northern B.C.!!!

It’s always a good thing when people come together and stand up as one.

One for all and all for one!

Wow, strikes / walkouts, etc will automatically cancel classes, no option anymore . Bad news for students

According to this federal government analysis,
[url]http://www4.hrsdc.gc.ca/.3ndic.1t.4r@-eng.jsp?iid=14unionized[url/]

,unionized BC workers lost 1.84 HOURS of work per worker in 2011 year due to strike and lockouts. (Capitalization for emphasis)

I will suggest that students lose more hours of instruction than that that per semester due to (insert your personal favorite from a lengthy list). When was the last labor action at the unionized CNC? 1995 if my memory is functioning today.

I will speculate that the unionization of UNBC’s faculty is more a reflection on a potentially poor working relationship between the previous faculty association and UNBC administration / HR department.

As an aside, labor legislation was put in place across Canada approximately 100 years to provide economic stability and to reduce work days lost due to management / labor conflict. And most long term analysis will support that the union enabling labor legislation has had that effect.

sorry, I think I have it this time

Awesome! Another public sector union! Good thing the tax payers have deep pockets.

Page 3 of UNBC 30 Nov 2013 report says: “Domestic undergraduate levels are estimated based on 2012/13 enrolments; currently, Fall 2013 enrolments are about 4%-5% below 2012.”

This is not good news, now tuitions will go up, quality of service will go down, Its not
a level playing field when employees demand
more. I agree with asking for more, but demanding??? When i was at city hall the other day, some guru was running around with his union coat on.lol. yup our taxes will surely keep going up.

Its time that we realized that its not wages that are driving up our taxes its more about profit for our suppliers and its not on the local level.
cheers

It is great news isn’t it? If there ever was a group of people who were hard done by it was this one. And the best part? Those pesky people who show initiative and enthusiasm will no longer be a problem! Let the mundane rule!

I would care but it ain’t my job… :)

Trade union status wont solve the UNBC main problem which is enrolment. The FTE student enrollments in UNBC have already dropped 4-5% from its peak in 2008/9 in a 4 year period. But 4-5% decline in just one year (2013) is an unprecedented sharper decline.

The heat now will be on the vice provost and acting dean of enrollment in UNBC, William Owen, and his boss Mark Dale (UNBC provost)who appointed Owen in May 2012. UNBC has now -300 decline in enrollment than +300 increase that some enrollment candidates in 2011/12 were promising to deliver. Time for a change …

The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Too funny!

I think UNBC should consider dropping the “green university” theme and start aligning itself with industy in the province. (especially industry in the north..) Oil/gas, Mining, Heavy industry, Engineering.. Im not saying drop the environmental programs but they need to start aligning the programs with the people who are doing the hiring..

One other thing is that alot of the programs at UNBC you have to go to other universites to complete the programs..

Given the sheer number of people sucking on the taxpayer’s teat it’s only a matter of time before the proverbial sky does indeed fall.
