Prince George, B.C.- The fire that ravaged a residence and shop on Old Cariboo Highway yesterday, was sparked accidentally.
Pineview Volunteer Fire Department Chief Lyle Wood says the fire was sparked by a lit cigarette that was tossed on to dry grass.
In no time, the fire had spread to the residence on the property and an old garage/shop. A thick cloud of smoke could be spotted for miles.
It took about five hours for firefighters to bring that blaze under control.
Pineview Volunteer Fire Department has a mutual aid agreement with other volunteer firehalls in the Regional District. Volunteers from the Beaverly, Red Rock, Buckhorn and Ferndale fire halls responded. In all there were 32 firefighters on scene.
While no one in the residence was injured, Chief Wood says a couple of the firefighters had to be checked out by ambulance attendants.
Damage from the fire has been estimated at between $100,000 to $200,000.

I hope the insyrance company charges the smoker for the damages.
Ps – the headline is inaccurate – tossing a lit cigarette in the grass is hardly an “accidental” fire
You don’t accidently throw a lit cigarette on dry grass! It’s like accidently flicking one out your window as your driving. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Eventually the smoker will get lung cancer. AKA Karma.
My, what a fine group of kind, empathic and judgmental people you are!
Fault, blame, cause, that’s the job of the police and/or insurance investigators, your job is to be supportive to your fellow man. It’s as though you enjoy kicking someone who is down
metalman.
No kidding. Hope the family can rebuild soon and get on with their lives.
I had a house fire years ago. It’s not something I would recommend to anybody. What ever wasn’t burned, was smoke damaged. Dealing with insurance was the worst. It was a constant battle with them, like getting blood from a rock.
I wish this family well, no matter the fault. The person that flicked their burning cigarette in the dry grass will pay personally for a very long time for his stupidity. You can buy new things, but you can’t replace “Old” things destroyed by fire!
If this was an accident and the driver was drunk would you be so quick to defend? This is no less intentional. Im glad you dont mind your insurance increases.
Obviously I am glad no one was injured or hurt. I am just really tired of seeing people flick cigarette butts out the window without a care in the world. Perhaps this story will wake a couple of them up.
I bet that person feel a bit stupid. I wonder if it was the owner of the property that flicked off a cigarette.
Amazing what a half a second of indiscretion can do. Hope they had insurance.
I get your point Interceptor, and agree. I too get angry seeing people dispose of cigarettes in a careless fashion in dry weather.
metalman.
I would think this fire more along the lines of negligence.
