Little Prince Steams Ahead

Prince George, B.C. – Summer’s coming, and that means it’s time for the Little Prince to let off a little steam on the Fort George Railway.

The dinkie steam engine is 102 years old.  It was built in 1912 by Davenport Locomotive Works and went into service pretty well right away, according to the folks down around Exploration Place.  The Little Prince actually arose from the remnants of five other 24” gauge steam engines and made its debut on the Fort George Railway line in 1978.

The Little Prince runs on track that was laid by a combination of volunteers, city workers and tenants, at the time, of the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre.

The steam engine runs from noon to 4pm on weekends and holiday Mondays from now until Labour Day.  And, following mutterings during the Core Review process that perhaps the Little Prince should be terminated, you’ll find a few items for sale at the train station the proceeds of which will go toward keeping what many consider a keepsake alive.

Its hard to believe that anyone would want to get rid of this amazing piece of Prince George’s founding history.
Great work, to all who have proceeded to keep it alive!
