Skakun Not Running For Mayor
Prince George, B.C. – The top job on Prince George City Council will be wide open for competition this fall following word from Mayor Shari Green that she will not put her policies and popularity before the electorate in the coming municipal election.
That leaves the door wide open for possible candidates for the mayor’s position. As yet there are no declared candidates but we can tell you the name of one person who won’t be running for the chief magistrate’s job, and that would be Councilor Brian Skakun.
Following Green’s notice that she won’t be seeking a position on city council this year, 250 News contacted Skakun and asked whether he would be running for mayor. Skakun says “I have a great full-time job and am working on my pension and other financial matters for my retirement. I like my role as a City Councilor and through discussions with my family, will seek a fifth term as councilor this fall.”

This could be Eugene’s turn!!!!!
That’s great news!
He’s a good councilor which doesn’t necessarily make him a great mayoralty candidate. I appreciate his honesty in saying that he likes his full time job and is counting on the upcoming pension. He’s probably too honest to be a mayor.
I am right winger, but I don’t mind Skakun. He can be a bit naïve on his public appearance, but at least he is honest.
Lyn Hall will be in the chase, but who else. I nominate GUS.
This is old news, Skakun made this announcement a long time ago on facebook.
Please, not Lyn Hall. He was useless on the school board and he was even more useless (if that’s possible!) on council. This city needs someone who’s not afraid to shake things up; someone who won’t just promise to cut the 10% but will actually push and push and push until it’s done.
Colin, Colin, Colin, Colin. Calling Colin.
The Mayor has a 1000 days in power. he/she has to earn the support of the key civil servants in the operation, and then that is what real power is about. You can’t bully your way in and say, this is the way it is or get out.
I think this is a wise decision on Brian’s part. It would be difficult having a left leaning “for the people” mayor surrounded by a right leaning “for business” council.
When he does decide to run for council, he should run with a slate of “for the people” council candidates. Get a majority of those candidates elected, and with Brian at the helm, as mayor, real positive changes could be made for the “people” of this fine city.
The only people who will run for mayor are those who don’t hold a REAL job. You know, sorta like people who own trinket shops and the such. What a joke, Green saying she wants to run federally because she enjoyed her stints on council and as the mayor so much she now wants to see how she can serve a bigger constituent area. Is she in serious denial or what.
I am saddened. Brian, my question to you is why don’t the people of Prince George deserve an honest mayor who believes in telling the public the truth? I do not agree with “Professional” but he has his right to vote how he feels. I have never, in 36 years of following Prince George city council, witnessed such honesty at an enormous cost! But I do agree with Axman that Lyn Hall was a real waste of time in the School Board and would not be a good choice for Mayor. But I will say this, I thought we would never see worse than Colin Kinsley. Shari Green proved me wrong, big time! If Brian Skakun won’t run, My heartfelt loyalty rides with Murray Krause. Another great man.
He would lose money, he makes more right now than the mayor with the added wage he gets for being on council. No one would quit a retirement job for one he would have for only four years.
Wouldnt mind Lyn Hall or Murray Krause. Who knows, we may have someone ckme out of the woodwork.
Skakun is a good council representative, he has done some very good work IMO. I respect his reasoning for not taking a run at the mayor’s chair, difficult to walk away from a career after all his years. A good councillor does not always make for a good mayoral candidate. In saying that, if he ever decides to take a run at the top job… I’d most likely give him the chance to prove me wrong.
It will be interesting to see who’s names end up on the ballot.
Murray! Murray!
Murray for mayor!
Why not? He’s dedicated, loves Prince George.
Read that Horgan met with “potential candidate” when he was in town. Don’t be surprised to see one of the dipper retreads that lost in the last provincial election,Sherry O or Bobby to take a stab at the mayors chair.
Heard it here first.
@peeps “a slate of “for the people” council candidates”…..kinda like what Dix did not too long ago and that worked out well for them didn’t it.
FYI Those sitting on council got there by getting the most votes by the PEOPLE of the city. Like it or lump it but I think it is a darn good system. Much better than a Peoples Republic as in China or North Korea.
Looks like ‘Rob Ford will be available if we want a big city sophisticate….
I think its really too bad that Shari won’t be running.
She’s taking away the opportunity for the people of this town to really show her how much they love her.
If Eugene won’t run for mayor, I would hope at least that he would consider running for council. Imagine he and Skakun together! They might be able to shake this town up a bit.
Then with Gus for mayor too, maybe we would see this town move ahead.
Yes, Murray for mayor!!!!
So we dont pay enough to drag good people away from thier jobs to serve us, but we scream bloody murder whenever they get even a penny raise. hmmm…
Thank God!! Skakum is a joke, he sputters cliches and stands on his soapbox and in the end he doesnt have the ba*ls to make a decision. The guy is a moron and shouldnt even be a councillor.
