Flags to Honour Our Fallen Soldiers

Saturday, May 31, 2014 @ 4:37 AM

Prince George, B.C. – It promises to be a very moving day as flags honouring fallen Canadian war veterans fly at Fort George Park, site of the 5th annual Red Shirt Marathon, “A Walk of Honour”.

The walk is organized each year by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, to show support for Canadian troops.  All of the proceeds raised go to Winch House, a home for veterans, first responders and associate organizations.  The 5 kilometre walk, or run, starts at 10 a.m. and you can register at 9 this morning at the bandshell at the park.

This year there will be 159 Canadian honour flags set up, including one that has just been made for Master Corporal Greg Matters.  The flag honouring him, as well as those honouring Cpl. Matthew McCully and Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick (in the photo above) have been displayed at the Legion branch.

One flag that will not be among the 159 set up in the park today is that honouring Calgary Herald, and former Prince George Free Press journalist Michelle Lang, who was killed along with four Canadian soldiers in a bomb blast in Kandahar, Afghanistan in December, 2009.  Her flag will be arriving after the Red Shirt Marathon has been held.
