Hwy 16 East Remains Closed
Prince George, BC – There is still no estimated time of opening for Highway 16 East between Prince George and Jasper…
A mud slide closed the route for several hours yesterday afternoon at Tete Jaune Cache, two-kilometres east of the junction with Highway 5.
While crews were able to re-open the route to single-lane alternating traffic for a few hours last night, another slide at the same spot just before 11:30pm closed both lanes again.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and maintenance contract staff are on-scene working to mitigate what officials are calling an 'active slide', but there is no estimated time of opening. Motorists are being advised to detour via Highway 97 North through the Pine Pass. An update is expected at noon at www.drivebc.ca
Meantime, Highway 16 West near Smithers re-opened overnight.
The highway was closed in the early evening, approximately 36-kilometres west of Smithers, due to a vehicle incident. So far, there is no information available on the incident from RCMP.
Traffic is moving through the area in both directions.
