PAC Seeks Support for Grant Application

Monday, June 9, 2014 @ 3:52 AM

Prince George, B.C.-  The  Prince George Regional Performing Arts Society is calling on Prince George City Council to back its  application for a grant from the  Northern Development Initiative Trust.

The request  is  for $3,400 dollars from the NDIT to be used in a  campaign  expected to cost $11,950.

In the application, Society President Kirk Gable   says the communications campaign will “boost and demonstrate public support for the construction of a Performing Arts Center in downtown Prince George.”

The application goes on to say  the campaign will  show that “supporting this initiative  will positively impact the local and regional economies, spur economic opportunities for businesses and boost the quality of life of our city and region as it creates jobs, stimulates revitalization, attracts diverse populations and strengthens communities.”

The application says that by demonstrating public support “we hope to influence city council’s decision in early July to support the PAC.”

City staff have been conducting a re-evaluation of the Performing Arts Centre plan,  examining the business  plan and the proposed design in current dollars.  That report is expected to come back to Council  soon.

I read an article in the Citizen recently, that stated that we’re approximately underfunding our CURRENT assets by $20.5 million annually. That means that every year we should be putting $20.5 million more into the maintenance of our current assets than we are if we’re to keep them from falling apart.

Until we get a handle on our current asset inventory, we can’t build anymore new buildings.

How much has major industry and the major employers put up?

They still have to come to the city for an application request to NDIT for $3400 so they can convince their major industry supporters to put up a few dollars? Where are the private champions of this proposal?

If they can’t get major industry and major employer contributions then clearly the city should set this aside, because their proposal calls for after all 1/3 paid for by private contributions. Is this a Northern Sports Center all over again where the city is left holding the bag?

1/3 of $60 million is $20 million in private funds, yet they can’t get $3 thousand to even make their pitch….

Keeps popping up like a wack a mole game.

Wonder if Kirk and his buds are willing to put up the money?

Yes, let’s see them produce something more than hot air before they have to ask for our money. If they can’t get their ‘private’ funds into an account to show for something, then its pretty well a given that this will be another beggar’s free for all.

The PAC idea needs to die a natural death and the only way to do that as I see it is to put it on the ballot this fall. The PAC Society has demonstrated that they can’t raise a dime for it and their view now seems to be that if they could just get a little cash to advertise to all of the naysayers we would be inclined to want to spend $40 million dollars on the gift that we will need to keep on giving.

If by some stroke of magic the PAC does get built, then it should be built at the CN Centre so that when it goes kaput we (the taxpayers) have a better chance of selling it.

So… They are asking the city for money in order to convince the city to spend money?

Don’t count on it Seamutt.
I think they will just snivel loudly until people get tired of listening to them and come up with the money to shut them up.

I don’t care, I will be moved away from this burg before the PAC is ever built.
