Councillor Humbled by Medal Presentation

Tuesday, June 10, 2014 @ 1:50 PM

Prince George, B.C.- “It was humbling, that’s the word I am searching for,  humbling”. That’s how Councillor Garth Frizzell  describes the  experience of  last Friday night.

Frizzell  was  attending the D-Day dinner at the Prince George Legion last  Friday night when  he became one of the honourees.

Here’s how it all came about.

Frizzell  had  received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal in March of 2013,  it  was to  recognize all the work he has done  through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, but  it  arrived  in the mail, along with a lovely letter from the Governor General.  There was no ceremony,  no public presentation, just a package in the mail advising that he  was one of 60 thousand Canadians selected to receive this medal.

Councillor Frizzell is not one to draw attention to himself.  He is known as the one who  goes quietly about his business and the business of the City.   In fact, he is not the person who  told  250News about the special moment at last Friday’s D-Day dinner.

Frizzell  had brought the medal with him to  the Legion’s dinner, and wanted to know what the protocol was about  wearing it.   He was asked when it  had been  “conferred”, but when  a medal arrives in the mail, that can hardly be considered an official presentation.

The  medal was then  whisked  away, only to appear  later in the evening.

“Here we  were, at a special dinner  to mark  the anniversary of  D-Day,  and there were people there who had actually landed on the beaches of Normandy on that day.  After  tribute was paid to them,  MLA Shirley Bond and  the Legion’s John Scott called me forward and officially  awarded me with the medal.  I am truly grateful, and humbled.”

LOL~~mayor in waiting……Liberal endorsed….

Seriously, he got it in the mail, nuff said. Didn’t want to draw attention to himself??
This story reads of nothing but drawing attention to himself at a time that wasn’t appropriate. Thank gosh there wasn’t a time cost analysis done.

60,000 medals given out? Reminds me of elementary school sports day where every kid gets a ribbon for just being there. To help their self esteem, I guess.

Congratulations Mr. Frizzell, well done.

What a joke! if there was a medal for flip flopping he would get that too.

“In fact, he is not the person who told 250News about the special moment” – who cares?

Frizell now aligns himself with the left – why would Shirley Bond want to pin a medal on him.

“there were people there who had actually landed on the beaches of Normandy”

This stunt by Frizell goes down as the lowest, slimiest self aggrandizing political stunt I have ever seen.

What a disgrace to take advantage of this special day for election purposes. How selfish.

So the medal’s a joke and useless when someone that the O250 masses hate gets it, but a total love in and kudos all around when Ben Meisner was awarded the very same a year ago.
And it was presented to Ben by Dick Harris in a photo-op ceremony covered by this very site.

Hmmm, I sense a double standard here as I’m sure both were well deserving of it for years of community service.

It’s an honor no doubt, but to akin it to a sports day award is a little harsh. It’s not that he got it in the mail like his reader’s digest subscription, it’s that he drew attention to himself at an event that wasn’t “about him”. Don’t tell me he didn’t think this through, he took it with him to the event “so he could ask about protocol for wearing it”, yeah right. It’s the political show boating that had him “awarded” with the medal at an event that wasn’t his place in the spot light in the first place.

To be a recipient of an honor from the Queen requires a slight bit of decorum, decorum of which Garth just doesn’t get. Whaa, I didn’t get important people to pin this medal on my chest, look at me, see what I can do…. Pity
