Most Canadians Think Northern Gateway Will be Built-Survey

Wednesday, June 18, 2014 @ 1:19 PM

Prince George, B.C.- A new Angus Reid poll shows  opinions  are divided across  Canada on whether the Harper  government made the right decision to approve the Northern Gateway project.

Just over one-third (37%) say they think the decision was right. About the same number (34%) say the decision was wrong and nearly one-third (29%) say they aren’t sure.

As for the 209 conditions that must be met before the pipeline can be built, the national results  show 43% saying they are enough to address concerns about the project, 37%  say they’re not enough, and 20% say they aren’t sure.

The regional  responses show  very different views  depending on which side of the Rocky Mountains  you live.

In BC – nearly one-quarter (25%) say the conditions “don’t even begin to address” concerns. In Alberta, about as many (28%) say the conditions are “more than enough” to address concerns.

40% of British Columbians say the approval decision was wrong, while just 18% of Albertans have that view.

38% of British Columbians  say the approval decision was right,  while  58% of Albertans surveyed  said it was right.

Nearly seven-in-ten  Canadians (68%) say regardless of how they feel about the pipeline, they do think it will actually be built.

Definately not the ‘huge majority’of British Columbians that the opponents are spouting off about…

Depends on who you ask tdiguy.

Also TSX hit a record high.

tdiguy, I suppose it depends on what group of people you hang out with. I’m pretty sure if you hang out with blue color workers or business people they will support the pipeline. If you hang out with people who vote NDP, and like to tie them selves to trees, and kiss fish, and have no idea where the money comes from you would say its bad idea.

BC

For 38%
Against 40%
Not Sure 22%

Seems as if we are evenly divided on the issue.

The future generations will never forget us, and the mistakes we’ve made. I forsee another bad oil spill.

OMG. If you are going to support it, at least MAN UP and act like it. These guys are probably scared of their own shadows. WHAT A BUNCH OF CHICKENS!!!! ROTFLMAO.

Ask the questions on Enbridge site about everything they will answer and the response may surprise you.

1. Would like to see world class spill program in place, but is not our responsibility, it fall on the federal government and tanker company to develop and support.
2. Yes we are responsible for land spills and will work to develop the best spill response possible.
3. What happens in the event of a spill in winter feet of snow and -30 with no road access? we have shut off valves and stations monitoring the line.
4. How much of this bitumen oil could spill out before the valve is closed? This depends on how bad the leak is and when a response team can access the site its really hypothetical question at this early stage.
5.Has work on the ground started? we are not allowed to commence work as no government decision has been made, contractors although are reforming some very basic work which is expected.
4.

I’d expect nothing more from the CBC. Our taxpayer funded, state run broadcaster is continuing with the anti-pipeline propaganda, and the public eats it up with a spoon.

And by ‘public’, I mean the people who never voted Conservative to begin with.

Yes, because the media is the one that muzzles MP’s, LOL.

CHICKENS!!!!!

You are talking all MP’s right?

Well there is a point to be made there seamutt, LOL . . .

In all seriousness, this is a project that the Cons are HUGE supporters of. They are HUGE supporters of the Alberta economy (which they should be) and one of Harper’s goals is to make Canada an “energy superpower” (nothing wrong with that goal I suppose).

For a government that spent millions of dollars on ads for “Canada’s Economic Action Plan” and undertook major efforts to rebrand the Government of Canada to the “Harper Government”, do you not find it just a bit strange that they aren’t proud of this announcement and willing to exchange thoughts and dialogue around of it?

But no. All they deliver is a brief written statement. Really? That’s what you do when you are a coward. I guess the controlled messaging machine still needs more time to figure out what their press lines are going to be.

Hey JB, maybe CTV is more your liking?

@NMG: Yes, left wing media is against the pipeline. Your point is?

I’m surprised that 18% of Albertans think the decision is wrong.

If this pipeline is defeated can we then start to lobby for all our pipelines within the borders of B.C. be dismantled? After all, they are old and prone to future leakage. Wind turbines, solar panels and rail cars are our only hope. I’ll just wait until Chrysler comes out with an electric Dodge Ram 1500 truck.

Dodges are already environmentally friendly Harb – most of the trucks start going “back to the earth” in about five years (at least around the rear fenders) :)

I think this is going head whether I like it or not. Time to stop protesting and start demanding what we are going to get out of it.

There’s a third component of the project which no one talks about.

There will be a tank farm with 19 tanks holding 500,000 barrels of oil each.

Now, I don’t know how they fare during an earthquake, maybe one of you could fill me in on that.

In earthquake zones they install unanchored tanks on top of substantial foundations so they sort of float, like in most of California.
