Speed Limits To Remain The Same On Northern BC Highways
Prince George, BC – Speeds along some BC highways will change next week, when the government announces the results of a review conducted by the Ministry of Transportation.
250News has learned that highway speeds in area north of Cache Creek along highway 97 will remain unchanged.
When he announced the review of highway speeds, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone said that, "It is not about what speed limits we have, but, rather, that we have the right speed limits".
The present speed limit on Highway 97 and Highway 16 East and West sits at 100 kilometers per hour. That will not change.
The speed limit on the Coquihalla highway will be increased from the present 110 kilometer speed limit.
The official announcement is expected next week.

yeah, I have to agree with this decision.
The roads have too many curves, and shoulders are not paved so it doesn’t give that safe feeling.
Thanks, I log about 40-50k a years, most of them on those roads, hwy 16,97
They could have upped the limit from 5th Ave to Northwood Pulp Rd. to 70 from 60.
Also around North Kelly Rd turnoff to the north city limits could be raised to 100 from 90. That`s a pretty boring stretch of highway.
Once 97S is double laned, 110 kph should be implimented IMHO
I can`t help but to notice how the ministry has changed the centerline markings to give a vehicle even less time to pass (especially north of PG). I feel passing a slow vehicle is more dangerous now than ever.
With the extremes in weather on the Coquihalla increasing the speed limit does not seem the brightest idea. It will spit out even more BMW suv’s now.
The amount of wildlife on our highways up here we don’t need an increase in speed. Most are already cruising over 110 kph.
I couldn’t imagine a speed limit increase along Hwy 97 north of PG anyway. Too many corners to deal with. Not like some people care anyway.
Its all BS lip service anyway. Accidents are caused by human error, lack of skill and or distracted driving.
PS – can we just put a meridian up in front of the Hart Mohawk across from the scales and another one in front of the driveways on the hill down into town. People stopping in the middle of the highway to turn off for a pack of smokes or to turn into their driveway from the wrong direction is the problem, not whether the speed limit is 60 or 70 on that hill.
It’s not unusual for traffic to be flowing very smoothly along Highway 97 North of Prince George. There are lots of long flat stretches where this speed is reasonable.
My issue is with the centre line marking. It seems like every time the lines are repainted, more and more passing “lines” are repainted as solid double lines. Who decides that these sections will no longer allow passing. Having recently from another long business trip, I found it very frustration to follow a slow moving vehicle for miles and miles and miles due to a double solid line when I know for a fact that the centre lines used to allow passing along those stretches of highway.
Following slow moving vehicles, some as slow as 78-80 kph on long flat stretches where the speed limit is 100 kph, is not a very good use of my time, especially when I can see that there are no oncoming vehicles and the stretch of road is more than long enough to safely pass!
There are many many sections of highway with oncoming double lanes, usually for traffic going up long hills. Many of these sections used to have signs that allowed the downhill traffic to pass when safe to do so. I believe that the signs used to say “Yield to Oncoming Traffic”. Now they say “Do Not Pass” which results in long line ups and big delays as traffic piles up behind a big motorhome or a fully loaded tractor trailer unit that is braking and downshifting to maintain control going down a long hill.
I can’t help but wonder if this is another of ICBC’s attempt to keep us safe at any cost. So much for personal responsibility!
Let’s just eliminate passing altogether and then no one will get in an accident, right??
If ICBC had it’s way, the speed limit would be 50 kph, everywhere and no passing would be allowed, anywhere! Come on People, learn how to drive so that the powers that be can stop over-regulating traffic flow!!
So how about if the center line color, in different shades of fluorescence indicate speed change. Thus if the center line is yellow its 100km/hr, If its lime green, its 70km/hr. If its hot pink, its 50km/hr.
Just a thought.
LMAO He spoke – unfortunately half the drivers dont seem to know the difference between white and yellow lines, dont challenge them too hard.
Gotta keep the revenue stream flowing
Slowing down improves your gas mileage I’m told…..they are trying to save us money!!
Why would they increase speed limits? That would remove millions of dollars in speeding tickets from their provincial tax grab program.

People driving Hwy 97 north pass wherever the hell they like to. Lines mean squat to most of these morons. Many of them are loggers in pickups. Many are semi trucks.
Faster, more fuel, more carbon tax.
