PAC report and Ice Oval Update Up for Discussion at Council

Monday, July 7, 2014 @ 3:58 AM

Prince George, B.C- The  updated price of the Performing Arts Centre will be on the  agenda for  City Council’s consideration this evening.

As was reported by 250News   last week, the report says the proposed Centre would cost $51.05 million in 2017 dollars.  It also suggests the City would be required to pump $404 thousand dollars a year in a subsidy to the centre.

Also on the agenda,  a presentation from the Outdoor Ice Oval Society.  There were 5688 visitors to the ice oval over the 66 days it was open to skaters.  That’s down significantly from the 8320 visitors over the same number of days a year ago.  The Ice Oval Society suggests the reduced numbers are a result of the 16 days when the temperature was below -20c)

Quinn Developments Inc will be making a presentation for a proposed seniors mixed social and market housing project.

Council will be called up to give fourth and final reading to the bylaw change that removes the business license fee from those who have secondary suites.  The rescinding will mean the city will have to pay back the license fees already paid. The rescinding of this bylaw has been a touchy issue on Council,  as each vote in the process  has been a 5-4 split among Councilors.

What does the operating cost per visit work out to? This is a very low user rate for a facility this size. Less than 100 visits per day.

in my opinion, with the winter games here this winter, the ice oval is a shoe in

I think the ice oval gets support as it’s a venue for the winter games and is a bare bones venue as is. I like that it is open to the public and provides opportunity to all income levels.

I think it’s to bad PG doesn’t have a rodeo grounds that could share its venue with the ice oval in its off seasons. If it could be made to work for things like chuck racing, monster truck events, horse racing… And have some grand stands put in to enable these events for spectators.

The stand alone ice oval seems inefficient to me.

heads are going roll, heads are going to roll.

Stupid tax any way.

the -20 days are the best ones to get out to the ice oval. it’s a beautiful venue and always in good shape. because I work all week, as do most people, the vast majority of the time I use the facility on weekends, and it’s typically quite busy. obviously, if I was able to go mid-week in the morning, when kids are in school and the vast majority of adults are at work, it would probably be empty. if costs are too high, possibly cut back on hours of operation, for the high use times?
