Prince George, B.C.- The Northern Lights Estate Winery on P.G. Pulpmill Road is one step closer to construction  now that City Hall has approved a  variance permit.

The Winery requested a  variance because it wanted to build  on the south side of P.G. Pulpmill Road, with no set back.

The overall plan for the  4.2 acre property includes  an orchard , wine shop and  facilities for outdoor events.

The approval of the development variance permit means construction can start this year so the facility will be ready  in 2015.

Work has  already been underway on the  property, planting 2200 fruit and berry plants to be used for future wine production.

The facility will highlight  wood architectural featues which the  developers say  will  represent Prince George  past and present.

What happens when all those trees and shrubs are stripped of every leaf by caterpillars? Maybe Pat can convince the city and reg dist to put our tax dollars to good use and spray. If it can be done in Victoria they should be able to do it here.

How many grapes are needed to produce a bottle of wine? I drove by the winery for first time the other day and we shocked at how small it was.

In response to your question Moose, approx. 1.2kg of grapes. But given the wide publicity surrounding this winery I’m ‘shocked’ that your unaware of what their target product is.

Personally I drive that section of road often and am thrilled to see this development progress, nice riverfront location, I hope this seeds more commercial development of our beautiful river side properties as opposed to heavy industrial users.

They are building fruit wine, not grapes.

” I hope this seeds more commercial development of our beautiful river side properties as opposed to heavy industrial users”
I agree. I climbed the cutbanks the other day and while taking in the view we were discussing how much riverfront we have that is wasted. We should have parks, restaurants, outdoor auditoriums, condos – you name it. There is a lot of undustry along the river that does not need to be there.

Lol go ahead tell CN they have to move.

That ground is so polluted it will take decades to clean it all.

I agree with Evolution & interceptor, lots could be done to improve our river frontage. Start with the eye sore that is the former Winton Global site.

Saywho, equally polluted rail yards in many cities have been redeveloped, in a perfect world it would be nice to reclaim the CN yards, but I also appreciate the important strategic asset this land is to CN. Maybe there is some way we could dress it up a bit, nothing crazy, just a bit of a facelift. Just because it’s a rail yard doesn’t mean it has to be so ugly.

Bad traffic at pulp mill/FMC/Husky shift change.

FMC does not have a plant in PG anymore.

Thanks Evolution. All I heard was we were getting a winery. I only drove by it the other day by accident.

A ‘fruit winery’. Only in Prince George.

The “Bonepart” winery on the drive to Vancouver is very successful! I know different climate, different ground etc etc etc.

I personally can’t wait until this one is off the ground and running. Prince George needs this kind of positive growth.

So much negativity here.

“I agree. I climbed the cutbanks the other day and while taking in the view we were discussing how much riverfront we have that is wasted” .. yes and take a deep breath everyone, THAT is the smell of money (I believe was the mantra when I moved here in the 80s). Now they just say, ewwww, that smells real bad. Might as well set up a winery right next to Veekens when it was in production. There was probably no people happier to see a business close down that those who live/lived on N Blackburn road, and downwind of Veekens.

:A ‘fruit winery’. Only in Prince George….I wonder if they had a float entered in the Pride Parade, oops, this is going to get gonged for sure.
