Arrest Made in Disappearance of Calgary Boy and Grandparents – UPDATE
Calgary Alberta, – An arrest has been made in the disappearance of 5 year old Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents, Alvin and Katherine Liknes.
The Amber Alert for Nathan has been canceled.
The person charged, is facing two counts of first degree murder for the deaths of Alvin and Katherine Liknes, and one count of second degree murder in the death of 5 year old Nathan O'Brien.
The man's name will not be released until the man has made his first appearance in court, but Calgary police say the man is from Airdrie and is expected to appear in court this afternoon.
The bodies of the three have not been found, police are asking for owners of rural properties to search their properties for any evidence.
Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson says there is no single piece of evidence that led them to conclude this was no longer a missing persons case, rather, a daily assessment of information gathered resulted in their determination the was a homicide.
"Every person, every analyst contibuted in some small way to removing all doubt that this was a homicide."
The three went missing June 29th. Nathan was at his grandparent's home for a sleepover. The three were reported missing when Nathan's mother showed up to pick him up.
Police did find evidence that a violent crime had taken place in the Liknes home.
Police had focused their investigation at a property in Airdrie Alberta..
Chief Hanson says this is a very complex case that is being put before the courts.
When asked if there were possibly other charges to be laid against this suspect, Chief Hanson says "We would be remiss if we didn't examine all other outstanding files."

Throw this bastard into the ocean to drown
I agree. It’s pretty obvious that it was the first guy arrested. He was arrested early this morning for more questioning about the case. It seems senseless….
Man…I was really hoping there would be a better outcome for this….
Really….words fail me…
Going to hug my kids a little bit harder tonight. Such a senseless end of three innocent lives especially the one that was over before it even had a chance to begin. I hope the guilty person gets sent to prison and his life is made to be hell.
Can’t believe he killed the grandchild. Disgusting!!!!
The guilty person should be stoned in a public square.
First: To the devastated parents of Nathan, words can not heal what you are feeling. I hope you and your family will be able to function in the aftermath of this brutal and senseless crime. I’m sorry for the loss of your son, and your parents.
To the coward that took the life of a child and his grandparents…..Yellow is the color I paint for you…obviously all your problems were theirs and you took it out on them…Why didn’t you just do yourself in and leave them alone?
Oh now now we live in Canada! Innocent until proven guilty.
Rolls eyes!
I could never imagine what the family is going through, nor would I want to. Losing a child would truly be hell on earth. Thoughts are with the family at this time. I really hope the person responsible gets what should come to him.

Douglas Garland!
A very sad outcome, I too was hoping it would have turned out better. I am surprise comments are open on this story since clearly there is going to be a court case and I have seen comments closed on several stories lately that have been a lot less inflammatory.
