Prince George, B.C., The Prince George Cougars let the cat out of the bag Tuesday morning announcing Todd Harkins as the teams 5th General Manager in team history.
The 45 year old Harkins had been serving as the Cougars interim General Manager since May and prior to that served as the team's Head Scout and Director of Player Personnel.
Harkins says it feels "surreal" to be named to the post adding he's been training for the role the past dozen years including time spent with the North Shore Winter Club and the Vancouver Northwest Giants of the B.C. Major Midget League where his success included winning six Provincial Pee Wee Championships and back-to-back Provincial Major Midget championships.
He says his goal in his new post is to "build a championship team by finding the right players" who have a thirst to make it to the NHL which he admits will take time.
Team president Greg Pocock says the hiring process "took 105 days" from the time the new ownership group took over the team.
He calls Harkins " a proven winner" and says the expectation this coming season will be to make the playoffs.
Pocock says 17 candidates inquired about the position and says five people were interviewed, including head coach Mark Holick who instead was rewarded with a two year contract extension behind the bench.
Harkins deal was for four years including a one year option. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The Cougars begin training camp August 22.

Very wise choice, now the question is : will he be bringing his family to LIVE in Prince George. We get all those high profile people but they choose to leave their family,s and rent only , and then spend most of the great summers elsewhere. Thanks to the Assistant Coach who chose to bring his young family to live here. Hope Mr. Holick will do also

What’s the difference? Dallas Thompson lives/lived here and you see how that turned out.
If I was in PG, I wouldn’t care if the GM lived in town full time or not. I would care about if he was committed to the job, if he could assemble a talented roster and if he could help turn the team from a perennial mediocre club into a consistent winner.
Its so nice to be talking and excited about hockey in the middle of summer in PG again. GO Cats Go!
The expectation for this coming season will be to make the playoffs. Hmmmmm.
Same expectations as all the other WHL teams.
Yes, all WHL teams want to make playoffs. That indeed is the plan! The building is going to rock this year and it will be fun to go to games again. Give us a fair shake and come to a game. Judge for yourself , as I know you will!
