Mine works to Close Tailings Pond Breach
Likely, B.C. – Imperial Metals has recalled some of the workers from the Mount Polley Mine to assist in building the rock berm to close the breach in the tailings pond.
Earlier today, Imperial Metals released its reports on the water analysis and tailings contents ( see previous story).
The debris which was pushed into Quesnel Lake has been boomed and will be moved to Fraser Mills haul-out site.
Imperial Metals continues to install pipelines and pumps in order to pump water out of Polley Lake. The water level in that lake rose when the tailings pond breached as a wall of sludge is blocking its natural outflow. There are concerns that wall of sludge could give way, and yet another wall of water would be sent down Hazeltine Creek.
There have been concerns expressed about a significant rain event in the area as it is feared a major downpour could wash more materials into Quesnel Lake. Environment Canada Meteorologist Andre Besson says there is a 60% chance of thunderstorm in the area for today, but no heavy rainfall expected. “There is a cold upper trough in the region, and there is a risk of thunderstorms, however, the real impact will be from wind gusts of up to 60 kilometers an hour, and those gusts will be localized. So, there will be some rain, but not a significant downpour.”

I certainly hope they use a little common sense this time and build about 10 smaller ponds like they should have done to begin with.
If there is concern of environmentally damaging pond contents, they could also build a secondary wall outside of the first – if the inside wall pops there is a second one there to stop the flow, good safe guard and another place to dispose of your overburden.
Just wondering, how do they clean up a tailings pond after a mine has been permanently shut down?
To do it right they have to line the pond with a compatible lining. Just using dirt for walls is a joke
Just dirt, please state how it was built? You seem to have knowledge in this department.
Try out CBC seamut..good video shows walls made of dirt breached, no lining.
